Abstract

Mango (Mangifera indica) is a tropical fruit that has economic importance in Central Highland of Vietnam. It has good nutritional values such as vitamins, carotenoids, polyphenols, fibers and antioxidants. Mango fruit is very perishable and considerable postharvest quality defect is occurred due to ripening and senescence. Major obstacles of mango during preservation and shipping are weight loss, ripening, and formation of brown spots resulting in decreasing of its value. Mango is very susceptible to chilling injury. The use of the edible coating materials for prolonging shelf-life of mango is essential. The present study aimed to identify the effect of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), chitosan, CMC + glucomannan, chitosan + glucomannan as edible coating in storage of mango fruits. Results demonstrated that 0.5% chitosan: 0.25% konjac glucomannan as edible coating could be used to coating mango fruit and maintaining its shelf life to 15 days. Keywords: Mango, CMC, Chitosan, Glucomannan, Coating, shelf-life.

Abstract

Introduction Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are malignant tumors thought to arise from the neural ectoderm and comprise of undifferentiated small round cells that affect soft tissue and bone. These tumors occur primarily in children and adolescents (thirteen to sixteen years old), with a tendency to recur quickly and metastasize especially to lungs, bone marrow, brain and lymph nodes. PNET are uncommon malignancies that are increasingly reported in the literature and located in the spine are extremely rare. In this study we present a case of 14 years old girl with PNET of the thoracic spine which recur after initial resection. Case Report a 14 years old girl presented with low back pain and progressive weakness of both of lower limbs of three months duration. On physical examination, motor and sensory function was lost, motoric strength in the lower limbs was grade 1/5 with hypoesthesia below L1 level. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine showed burst pathologic fracture of the 12th thoracic spine with suspicious malignant lesion in the 12th thoracic spine. Initially the condition was treated with laminectomy, decompression, stabilization and open biopsy. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry of the lesion revealed the diagnosis of PNET. During the early postoperative course, she had instance neurological recovery and was able to walk unassisted. But, 1 month later the neurologic deficit recurred and she was treated with extended laminectomy with tumor debulking. Then the patient received chemotherapy and planned for radiotherapy. Conclusion Primitive neuroectodermal tumors (PNET) are extremely rare and are aggressive with poor outcomes. Good modalities play a significant role in the identification of the feasibility of surgical excision of the tumors, detection of distant metastasis, and evaluation of the efficacy of therapeutic interventions. Keywords:  Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET), Malignant Tumor, Rare Tumor, Spinal Tumor.

Abstract

Aim of study: To evaluate some fibrosis markers such as vitronectin, serum vitronectin receptor (VNR) and the amino terminal propeptide of type III procollagen (P-III-P) in the sera of liver cirrhosis patients and to monitor the behavior of these markers in disease progression. Material and Methods: About (60) volunteer participated in current study; 30 patients and 30 patients. The patients were divided according to severity of the disease by Child-Pugh Score to three classes: (10) patients class A, (10) class B patients and (10) class C. Procollagen III peptide, serum vitronectin and vitronectin receptor were measured in serum by ELISA. Results: A Significant increases were found in serum vitronectin, receptor and sP-III-P in all patients' sub-groups when compared to control. VNR seems to detect early liver cirrhosis and distinguish between patients (A and B classes) and advanced disease with cirrhosis. Conclusion: According to our data, the area under curve of serum VNR is greater than vitronectin and Sp-III-P so it can be act as a marker of liver cirrhosis and also could be used to monitor the severity of disease.
