Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text through Numbered Heads Together Technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class IX/A SMP SWASTA UPMI MEDAN that consisted of 30 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and the first cycle consisted of four meetings and the second cycle consisted of two meetings. The instruments of collecting data were quantitative data (Writing Test) and Qualitative data (diary notes, observation sheet, interview and questionnaire sheet). Based on the writing test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the test I the mean was 67,6, in the test II the mean was 74.5 and the test III the mean was 86.56. Based on observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interest in writing. The result of the research showed that NHT can improve students’ achievement in writing procedure text. Key Words: Writing, Procedure Text, Number Heads Together

Abstract

This study aims to design Screencast O Matic as media of writing descriptive text for grade eighth students in Junior High School. The research was conducted by Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing the data, designing new writing media, validating to experts, revising writing media, and final product. The subject of this research was grade eighth students at SMP Negeri 27 Medan. The instruments used for collecting the data were interview and questionnaire. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 30 respondents to get the students’ needs in learning descriptive text. The writing media have been validated by two experts, English teacher and English lecturer. The average score from English teacher and English lecturer was 90,4% so it was categorized as Very Good. It means the developing Screencast O Matic as media of writing descriptive text is appropriate for grade eighth students in Junior High School. Keywords: Research and Development (R&D), Writing media, Descriptive text, Screencast O Matic

Abstract

This study concerned on improving students’ achievement in readaing comprehension narrative text through preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review (PQ4R)  technique. This study was limited on the second year junior high school students’ achievement in reading comprehension after teaching by applying preview,question, read, reflect, recite, and review ( PQ4R).The objective of this study was to find out the improvement of students, achievement on reading comprehension through PQ4R technique.The subject of the study was VIII-1 students of SMP N 4 Pagaran. The numbers of the students were 35. The techniques for data analysis were quantitative dataand qualitative data.In analyzing the quantitative data, the mean of the students’ score for the test I cycle I was  53.62, the mean score of test II in cycle II was 73.28, the mean of test III in cycle II was 75.65. The conclusion is that PQ4R can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension narrative text. Keywords: Reading, Reading Test, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

The objectives of this study were to analyze the extent does the presentation of descriptive text in the textbook student grade seven and analyze factors caused the presentation the way it is. The study used qualitative descriptive method. The subjects of this study were two textbooks of student grade seven. The technique of data collecting was byanalyzed using several steps according to Miles’s theory, Huberman and Saldana (2014) analyze data with three steps: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. After analyzing the data, the researcher found the text structure in two textbook is mpt perfect yet. The text structure of descriptive text which is classification in textbook by Kemendikbud is unavailable while in Erlangga, the location in descriptive text is unavailable. But, the components of lexicogrammatical is presented well. The result of the study showed that the reason underlying the imperfectness is financial factor. Erlangga publisher is purpose to gaining a financial benefit, while Kemendikbud publisher is not motivated by the profit.Keywords: descriptive text, textbook, curriculum 2013

Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out whether the effect of using CIRC technique in writing narrative can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this study was eleventh grade of SMAN 1 Siempat Nempu Hulu, which was consisted of 4 classes. Two classes were taken as the sample by using random sampling technique. The class XI IPA 1 was as experimental group and XI IPA 2 was as the control group. The experimental group was taught by using CIRC, otherwise control group was taught by using conventional technique. The instrument for collecting data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that CIRC has a significant effect on students achievement in writing narrative text. The result shows that the t-observed is higher than t-table (3.102 > 2.024 (α=0.05)) with the degree of freedom (df) = 20. Therefore, CIRC significantly affects on the students’ ability in writing narrative text. Keyword: Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC ), Writing, Narrative text.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding out the implementation of remedial teachingincluded preparation, implementation of activities (process), and follow-up inSMA Kejayaan Indonesia Binjai for grade XI done by the English teacher.Another aim of this research was to find out the factor that contributed to thestudents’ success in remedial teaching. Descriptive qualitative research designwas used in this research. The participants of this study were an English teacherand 6 remedial students who had passed remedial teaching. The data sources inthis study were the teacher’s utterances and questionnaire answer sheets. The datawere collected by interviewing the teacher and spreading Google Formquestionnaire for the remedial students. Based on the interview, it was found thatthe teacher included preparation as to diagnose students’ difficulty,implementation as to re-explain the material, and follow up as to give thesuccessful students more motivation. It was concluded that what the teacher haddone can be called as remedial teaching because she had already done 6 out of 7steps of proper remedial teaching which are reviewing the case, selectingalternative action, provision of special services, implementing remedial teaching,re-measuring learning outcomes, and re-evaluating. For the questionnaire result,the factor that contributed to the students’ success in remedial teaching came frominternal and external factor.

Abstract

The objectives of this study was to develop the writing materials in recount text for the eight grade students at SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. This was a Research and Development (R&D) study. The subjects of the study were the students of eighth grade of SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. The research procedures, were adapted from Jolly and Bolitho’s model in Tomlinson (1998) with some modifications, consisting of conducting the need analysis, writing the course grid, developing the first draft, getting expert judgment and evaluating the first draft, also revising the first draft of the materials.The instruments to collect the data were need analysis questionnaire and expert judgment questionnaire. The data from the need analysis were analyzed quantitatively using frequency and precentage, then the results were used to develop the course grid. The data from the expert judgment were analyzed quantitatively through descriptive statistics while the suggestions were used to revise the first draft of the materials. The product of this study is a set of writing materials of recount text entitled “Guide for Writing” for students of eighth grade of SMP RK Serdang Murni Lubuk Pakam. The writing material is “My Unforgettable Experience”. It  consists of Pre-writing, Drafting, Responding, and Editing tasks ranging 15 tasks. Based on the research findings from the expert judgment, the whole aspects of the developed materials were 3.76 which was in the range of 3.25 < x ≤ 4 and can be categorized as “very good”. Keywords: Recount Text, Writing Materials, R&D Method

Abstract

This study aims to develop a test for reading report text based on the Two-Tier Multiple Choices test for Junior High school students in SMP Negeri 3 Dooksanggul. The Two-Tier Multiple Choices Test was developed by using Research and Development (R&D) method proposed by Borg and Gall (2007), which has been modified by Sugyono (2016). It consists of six steps: gathering data and information, analyzing data, developing material, validating by experts, revising the product, and developing the final product. The test instrument developed was a twolevel multiple choice test consisting of multiple-choice questions and a choice of reasons totaling 30 questions. The validator assessment sheet consists of three aspects, namely material, construction, and language, with 12 assessment indicators and is analyzed using the Content Validity Index (CVI). The first draft was revised based on validation results and experts' comments to develop a better test instrument. The developed reading test validated the Content Validity Index (CVI) score was 1.00. It concluded that the instrument test was categorized as "Very Good."

Abstract

This study aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of class XI SMA N 1 Kerajaan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI consisting of 20 students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 20 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result of the needs analysis showed that the students needed materials for speaking which were attractive and interesting and based on their social life context. Thus, the learning materials were developed into 6 of speaking material. By two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,7 or 95% from English Lecturer and 4,5 or 90% from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant, thus, it can be concluded that contextual teaching and learning speaking materials had been appropriated for grade XI students of Senior High School.Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials, Contextual Teaching and  Learning

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether Collaborative Strategic Reading significantly affected on students’ reading comprehension. This study was an experimental design. The population of this study was grade VIII students’ of SMP IT Nur Ihsan Medan with the total number 34 students, which was taken as the sample by using total sampling. The students were divided into two groups, namely experimental and control group. The Experimental group was taught by using Collaborative Strategic Reading while the control group was taught without using Collaborative Strategic Reading. The instrument of collecting data was multiple choice test. Content validity was applied in this research. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used the Kuder Richardson (KR-21). The result of the research showed that the reliability of the test was 0.76, it means that the reliability of the test is high. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis revealed that t-test is higher than t-table (3.21 > 2.04) at the level significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) = N-2 = 32. It means that there is a significant effect of applying Collaborative Strategic Reading on the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.Key words: Reading Comprehension, Collaborative Strategic Reading, and Students’ Achievement
