Abstract

This study concerned on improving students’ achievement in readaing comprehension narrative text through preview, question, read, reflect, recite, and review (PQ4R)  technique. This study was limited on the second year junior high school students’ achievement in reading comprehension after teaching by applying preview,question, read, reflect, recite, and review ( PQ4R).The objective of this study was to find out the improvement of students, achievement on reading comprehension through PQ4R technique.The subject of the study was VIII-1 students of SMP N 4 Pagaran. The numbers of the students were 35. The techniques for data analysis were quantitative dataand qualitative data.In analyzing the quantitative data, the mean of the students’ score for the test I cycle I was  53.62, the mean score of test II in cycle II was 73.28, the mean of test III in cycle II was 75.65. The conclusion is that PQ4R can improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension narrative text. Keywords: Reading, Reading Test, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

This study was conducted to discover students’ achievement in narrative text through snowball throwing model. The design of this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The subject of this study was the students of Grade VIII, 2013/2014 school year of SMP Swasta Taman Harapan Medan. The number of students was 39 students. The research was conducted in to two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meeting which consisted of four stages, namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. To collect the data the instruments that used were qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected by using diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet. The quantitative data were collected by giving speaking test. Based on the data, the students’ score in speaking test got improvement in every cycle. In Test I, the mean of the students’ score was 64.44 while in Test II, the mean of the students’ score was 68.92 and in Test III, the mean of students’ score was 74.15. Based on the result of quantitative data, it was found that there was improvement on students’ speaking achievement in narrative text. Abstract

This study aims to discover the improvement of the students’ achievement in writing narrative text by applying Spore Strategy. The objective of this study is to find out whether the Spore strategy can improve students’ achievement in writing narrative text or not. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class XI IPA 2 of SMA Negeri 6 Medan which consists of 34 students. This study applied quantitative and qualitative data. The data of this study were obtained quantitatively through writing test which show that the students score kept improving in every test and qualitatively based on diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet which show that teaching learning process ran well, the students were active, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. In the first test, the mean score was 56.8. In the second test, the mean score was 67.2, and in the third test the mean score was 81.2.The research findings indicated that Spore Strategy significantly improved students’ achievement in writing narrative text.   Keywords: Writing, Spore Strategy, Test, Data, Classroom Action Research.

Abstract

This study was conducted as an attempt to find out the effect of using Frayer Model on Students’ Vocabulary Mastery. This study used the experimental design. The population of this study was the students of SMA Parulian 1 Medan. There were sixty students of first grade senior high school as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two randomized groups namely experimental group and control group. The control group was taught by conventional method while experimental group was taught by using Frayer Model. The instrument of collecting data was objective multiple choice test which consisted of 40 items. To obtain the reliability of the test, the researcher used Kuder-Richardson (KR-20) formula. The calculation shows that the reliability was 0.73 (high). The data were analyzed by using t-test. The calculation shows that t-observed (5.41) is higher than t-table (2.00) at the level of significance (α) 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 58. Therefore, null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected and alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It means that teaching vocabulary by using Frayer Model has more significant effect than teaching vocabulary by using conventional method.   Keywords: Vocabulary, Students’ Vocabulary Mastery, Frayer Model

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out whether the application Preview, Read, Write, and Recite (PRWR) method improve student’s achievement in reading recount text. This research applied classroom action research model. This study was done in six meetings. The subject of this study was first year of SMAN 1 Delitua. Primary data were collected by giving 20 questions of multiple-choice test, the aspects contained in the tests focused on generic structure, main ideas, factual information, and Secondary data were collected by (interview, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet. Based on analysis data, it was found that the student’s achievement improved. It could be seen from the comparison of result in the orientation test and the cycle test I and II. There were only 9 students who had passed minimum criteria KKM in orientation test (75). The improvement showed that in cycle I and II, based on the total average score it was 16 (42,4%) up to 26 (78,7%) in cycle II, The secondary data gathered from interview, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet, showed that students’ expression and enthusiastic also improved. Thus, it was found that the applications of Preview, Read, Write, and Recite (PRWR) method in process of teaching improved students’ achievement in reading recount text. It is suggested that English teachers apply PRWR method in teaching reading recount text. Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate whether the application of Taba model improve the students’ achievement in Reading Comprehension. This study was an classroom action research. The subject of this study was class VIII SMP Negeri 1 Bandar which consisted of 32 students. The study was conducted in two cycles, cycle I consisted of three meetings and cycle II consisted of three meetings. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data (reading comprehension test) and qualitative data (observation sheert, and questionnaire sheet). Based on reading comprehension scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation and based on the observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet it was found that teaching and learning process ran well. Students could enlarge their thinking process. The result of this study showed that the Taba Model improved the students’ achievement in reading comprehension.   Keyword: reading comprehension, taba model, classroom action research.

Abstract

This research concerned on The Effect of Teaching Media on Students’ Achievement in Speaking. This study used the experimental design. The population of the study was the students of SMP Negeri 1 Air Putih. There were twenty students from five classes as the sample of the research. This study was conducted with two groups namely experimental and control group. The experimental group was taught by applying English comics while control group was taught with written texts. The instrument of collecting the data was used tape recorder. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The calculation shows that t-observed (2.378) is higher than t-table (2.086) at the level of significance 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis is rejected and alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means that teaching speaking by applying English comics as the media has more significant effects than without using English comics.   Keywords: English Comics, Story Retelling, Students’ Achievement in Speaking, Experimental Research

Abstract

Abstract This study concerrns with Improving the Students Writing Narrative Text by Applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique.The objective was to investigate improvement of students’ writing narrative text by applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of MTS Al- Hasanah Medan totalling to 29 students. They were taught writing by cooperative integrated reading and composition technique. The instruments for collecting data were quantitative data and qualitative data (observation sheet, questionnaire sheet, and interview sheet). Based on the test score of quantitative data, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the orientation test the mean was 43, 2, in the cycle I test the mean was 55, 6. In the cycle II test the mean was 67.2. The percentage of orientation test was 10, 34%, cycle I test was 24, 13% and cycle II test was 86, 20%. The finding of the research showed that applying Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition Technique significantly improved students’ writing. The qualitative data show that the students were more interested and motivated on writing through cooperative integrated reading and composition technique. It is suggested that teachers should apply cooperative integrated reading and composition technique as one of methods to improve students’ writing. Abstract

This study was focused on the improvement of Grade VIII students’ writing achievement in descriptive text by using application of STAD Technique. The objective of  this study was to find out whether STAD Technique could improve Grade VIII students’ writing achievement in descriptive text. The study conducted by using Class Room Action Research ( CAR ). The subjects of this study were students of Grade VIII Class 2 of State Junior High School ( Sekolah Menengah Pertama) SMP PAB 10 Medan consisting of 23 students. The study was implemented in two cycle and each cycle consisted of three meeting. The instruments of data collection consisted of quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken from students written test and the qualitative were taken from the  interview, diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire. Based on the descriptive writing result, students score in the test of cycle I, the mean score was  68,4 and it the test of Cycle II was 76,9. Based on the observation sheet, it was found that the teaching-learning process well done. The students were active and curious in writing. In line with the data, it found that STAD ( Students Team Achievement Divisions) technique can improve Grade VIII  students’ writing achievement in descriptive text. Abstract

This study concerns with improving grade VIII students’ achievement in writing procedural Paragraph through demonstration method. This research was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the study was grade VIII students of SMP N 2 Babalan which consisted of 35 students. The instruments for collecting data were primary data (writing test) and secondary data (interview sheet, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet). Based on writing scores, students’ score kept improving in every evaluation. In the test I the mean was 64,91, in the test II the mean was 74,57 . Based on interview, observation, and questionnaire sheet, it was found that teaching-learning process ran well. Students were active, creative to give their idea, enthusiastic, and interested in writing. The finding of the research showed that applying demonstration method significantly improved students’ writing achievement.
