Abstract

This study deals with a strategy named Group Discussion model of CooperativeLearning strategy applied in the teaching of Critical Reading course at English Study Program,Brawijaya University. By using that strategy, it is expected that the problem in CriticalReading class can be solved and students’ ability in critical reading will, in turn, be improved.The design of the study is Classroom Action Research (CAR) since the study is aimed atimproving the students’ critical reading ability and solving the classroom’s problems on theteaching of reading. Based on its characteristics, the classroom action research is donerepeatedly until those problems can be solved. Dealing with the classroom setting, the study isdirected to develop the teaching strategy in order to find out a solution to the classroom’sproblem in the teaching of reading. This study reveals that Cooperative Learning strategy hassuccessfully improved students’ critical reading ability. In doing so, there are stages conductednamely, having cooperative work organization, using appropriate media, having creativity (forteachers), monitoring teaching and learning processes closely, and giving students feedback ontheir work. In conclusion, Cooperative Learning can be beneficial for students’ learning incritical reading as it can make students active and enjoy the classroom activities. However, italso has weaknesses such as time consuming and less appropriate for classes with biggernumber of students. Despite the weaknesses, teachers are still recommended to apply thisstrategy in critical reading classes.

Abstract

As an event that is on the rise lately, English radio talk show in Yogyakarta provides various interesting topics with various invited guest from different background which create rich conversations among the radio announcer and the guest. When the interlocutor commits a flouting maxim, the radio broadcasting context plays an important role in interpreting the meaning of the speech. Hence, the purpose of this study is to determine the types of flouting maxim and the reason why it is flouted. This research was designed as descriptive qualitative research methods. Sources of data in this study were conversations between radio announcers and guests who have the flouting maxim utterance in English radio broadcasting program. The finding shows 10 flouting maxim data in English radio talk shows in Yogyakarta. There were 40% flouting of the maxim of quantity, 30% of the flouting of the maxim of quality, 20% of the flouting of the maxim of relevance and 10% of the flouting of the maxims of implementation. The announcer and guest in the English radio broadcasting in Yogyakarta flout the maxims deliberately due to several factors such as providing detailed information, convincing, making humble attitude, saving face and creating a relaxed situation with a joke or indirect message.

Abstract

-To improve students‟ English proficiency, Indonesian Civil Aviation Institute has placed TOEFL® preparation in the curriculum of study program. Nevertheless, the learning design was not common compared with similar program of TOEFL® preparation in another institution. ICAI put a single teacher in class consisted of 24 students with various skills. Consequently, the English teacher had to employ a strategy to cope with this large multilevel class. This qualitative research was conducted to analyze the teacher‟s strategy. Its purpose is to give enlightenment toward the conformity between learning design and learning objectives. A pre-test and post-test were given to a determined class and the grades were compared to see the fulfillment of the objective. An observation and note taking was undertaken during the learning process to explain the strategy. The result shows that the teacher occupy cooperative learning through flexible grouping to cope the class challenge. While the result shows 57% students in the class were able to gain 500 as minimum required score, it has implication in examining the learning design in broader context.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a skill that should be developed to enable students cope with 21st century challenges. Critical Listening class is one of the compulsory subjects in English Language Education Study Program of Mercu Buana University Yogyakarta which goal is to enhance students critical thinking whenever they listen to particular information. However, the instrument to measure the students’ critical listening skill has not been developed yet. Therefore, this study aims at developing an instrument to develop students’ critical listening skill. The study was started by developing the conceptual definition and operational definition of critical thinking and critical listening. Afterwards, a set of instrument containing of 40 items were developed. Identifying instrument content validity is the first step the focus of this study. The instrument items were then validated by 3 experts. The result of this study showed that 30 items on the instrument was considered valid as they had I-CVI ranged from 0,8-1. The other 10 items were deemed to be invalid since the I-CVI is lower than 0,78. The result of this study encouraged the researcher to revise the instrument and improve the validity of the items.

Abstract

The following research is intended to find out how lecturers deal with English teaching during the full-online learning program. However based on the online teaching pedagogy, teachers who are expert in the field are those who can make use of ICT tools and equipment to make the learning progress is accessible and also interactive. Based on Compton (2009). Additionally, he also mentions does not mean that a good teacher in face-to-face interaction can also be a good one in virtual classroom. To meet the criteria, the research will ask the questions on what are the perceptions and activites used by the English lecturers once they adopted the online teaching method. Participants were gathered from 15 lecturers who are currently teaching Business English for the first semester students. The LMS used is provided by Bunda Mulia University where the lecturers and students interacting through forum discussion. Hopefully the result could evaluate how far the teachers make use the online teaching platform and whether they also used other sources to support their online classroom.

Abstract

This research aims to map out teachers‟ beliefs about, perceptions of, and classroompractices emphasizing English as the medium instruction towards STEM education. Thisstudy addresses the following research questions: (1) what are teachers‟ beliefs on applyingEnglish as the medium instruction through STEM subjects in elementary school? (2) Howdoes English as medium instruction impacts STEM subjects for elementary school? (3)What do teachers identify as challenges and barriers to use English as medium instructionin teaching STEM subjects? Moreover, this research determined as the first step to designpre-service teacher to teach STEM disciplines subjects emphasizing English as the mediuminstruction. A multi-case case study was conducted with two elementary school teachers.These two teachers were purposefully selected from a Cambridge Standard School torepresent science, mathematics, and as English teachers as well. Data collection consists ofdocument analysis, classroom observations, and interviews. Triangulation was used tovalidate the data. Data were analyzed using the constant comparative method. Findingsfrom the case studies are (1) teachers‟ beliefs influence their professional coursework,classroom practices, and how they perceived future education, (2) as the medium ofinstruction changes the classroom gets more interactive and students have fun in learning,(3) new vocabularies that students have not known and matched approach were two bigbarriers for teachers.
