ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe The Rejection of Technoculture in the Alita: Battle Angel Movie by using Jean Francois Lyotard Theory. This research used the Descriptive Qualitative Method. The source of the data in this research is Alita: Battle Angel Movie directed by Robert Rodriguez that is published in 2019. The data was collected through watching the movie carefully several times, pausing every scene to read the conversation text, screen shooting the image that related, and taking a note about the data. This research is analyzed by identifying characters that represented the Technoculture, Displaying and interpreting the data about Technoculture by using Postmodernism theory by Jean Francois Lyotard Theory and Drawing the conclusion. The result of this research found that Alita, Zapan, Grewishka are characters that represented the Technoculture (Cyborg and Human Relationship and Hedonism) represented in the Alita: Battle Angel Movie through the power of science and technology, individualism, and rationality. The Rejection of Technoculture depicted through the character of Alita that her power is not evolved from technology but originating from the legendary martial art called Punzer Kuntz before her body is combined with Ido's technological tools. Technology is not necessarily having an important role in the human body as described by the heroine character, Alita herself, whose overall strength did not come from technology. Alita in this movie is a parody because she is a robot that humanized herself. In fact, she shows many aspects of his humanity that humans are busy degrading themselves.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze “The Kissing Booth movie script” in terms of semantic study. The research question of this study is “How is Affective meaning used in The Kissing Booth Movie Script by Beth Reekles?”. The objective of this study is to describe affective meaning is used in ‘The Kissing Booth’ Movie Script by Beth Reekles. The source of data is taken from the movie script by Beth Reekles. This study uses the descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected by searching and downloading, watching the movie, reading the script, classifying, and coding the data. Based on the analysis the writer finds affective meaning such as positive and negative affective meaning. Positive affective meaning consists of three data was (happy data 1 and 2, flattered data 3) and negative affective meaning consists of 12 data that are (angry data 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, shocked data 8 and 13, disappointed data 7 and 14, unhappy data 10, sad data15). The most dominant implication in the movie script objects is the emotion of negative affective meaning. The use of affective meaning depends on the context of the situation that occurs when the utterances stated.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic approach study of an analysis of illocutionary in ice age collision Course Movie Script. The objectives of this researcher are to find out the types of illocutionary acts are performed by all the characters' utterances, and to find out dominantly of types of illocutionary acts are used by all the character's utterances. The researcher used the content analysis qualitative method to describe and analyze the selected illocutionary acts which are watching movies and then classify them according to George Yule’s concept types of illocutionary acts. The researcher used content analysis which focuses on classifying the types of illocutionary acts and the dominantly of types of illocutionary acts in the ice age collision course movie carried out by all the characters. The researcher found that are the characters use all types of illocutionary acts. First representatives there are {Stating (3), Suggesting (1), Complaining (1)}. Second is directives, they are {Asking (3), Commanding (4), Forbidding (2), Demanding (2)}. Third, is commissions, they are {Promising (1)}, Forth is expressive, they are {Congratulating (2), Thanking (1) Welcoming (1), Apologizing (1)}, and the last is a declaration, they are {Declare (1), Naming (1)} Based on the data above, it reveals that all characters in their utterances dominantly used the illocutionary acts of Directive with the total of 11 data.

Abstract

This study focused on analyzing intrinsic and extrinsic value in “Erin Brockovich” by Susanah Grant. This study aimed to describe a character's utterance that contains intrinsic and extrinsic values in Erin Brockovich's movie script. There are two sources of data in this study, they are movie scripts from Erin Brockovich's movie as primary data and audiovisual movies as secondary data. Data is collected through Searching and downloading the movie script of Erin Brockovich, reading the script, looking for sentences containing the intrinsic and extrinsic value, taking note of Intrinsic value and extrinsic value, coding the data and rechecking the data. Techniques of Data analysis are done through the presentation of data, explaining and interpreting data, and concluding data. This study indicated that the Erin Brockovich movie script has two values as intrinsic and extrinsic value. First, the intrinsic value is presented in the form of Erin's care to the people at Hinkley. Second, the extrinsic value is presented in the form of PG&E's selfish attitude towards the people at Hinckley. The writer obtained 21 data. 18 intrinsic value data and 3 extrinsic data of intrinsic value found in this movie script meaning that intrinsic value is more dominant than extrinsic value. Intrinsic value is more dominant than the extrinsic value because in this movie script the focus is more on discussing positive actions carried out by the characters in the movie that are helping people by overcoming cases of water pollution.

Abstract

This research is about analyzing the words and images in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie. To analyze this research, the researcher uses the theory by Kress & Van Leeuwen (2006) to analyze verbal and visual elements in the framework of proposing a comprehensive and systemic interpretation of meaning. This research objective is to determine how words and images are used and related meaning among them. This research uses qualitative description to discuss the two meanings of verbal and visual modes in the Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie. The types of data analysis are presenting the data, describing the data, finding out the relationship between the meaning of words and the meaning of images, and concluding the data. The researcher found that the dominant used on Mental Processes in the words component. While images were analyzed using only three elements which are on the body of the actors in Maleficent movie such as facial expressions dominant in the feeling happy, gestures dominate when characters stand up straight has meaning confidence, and clothing color dominant the black colors have meaning sadness and 4 data were interrelated for relationships meaning among the modes. The researcher found that this research shows a movie that brings ideology for the community not to judge someone only from their outward appearance and for women to have the power so that they are not easily oppressed.

Abstract

Ma is a 2019 Psychological Horror movie that was directed by Tate Taylor and produced by Universal Pictures which was released in 2019. This study focuses on the main character. The objective of the study is to explain the representation of Carl Gustav Jung’s Psychoanalysis in the movie Ma. The data used the descriptive qualitative method. Carl Gustav Jung’s Psychoanalysis was used as a tool of analysis to explain the findings. The result in this study concerns Ma’s personality upbringing, she utilizes her persona to mislead the teenagers into fulfilling her desires to get her revenge on her old friends. Sue Ann's shadow gets her into a dark place in her life. She tortured the teenagers and killed Ben and Mercedes without acknowledging her bad behavior. She does not show empathy to her victims.

Abstract

This study is intended to analyze the form of Framing of Covid-19 vaccine new on CNN website based on Discourse Analysis perspective theory of Framing Analysis by Zhondang Pan & Gerald M. Kosicki. The objective of this research is “To describe how are the forms of framing of covid 19 vaccine news on CNN website”. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The researcher used Zhondang Pan & Gerald M. Kosicki Framing Models to analyze the data. The source of the data in this research was taken from News on CNN Website. The data was collected through reading intensively, identifying and selecting, classifying, describing, and interpreting the data to get a complete conclusion of Framing Covid-19 Vaccine News on CNN Website by Zhondang Pan & Gerald M. Kosicki theory. The researcher analyzes six pieces of data or news from the CNN website. The result showed there are framing the researcher found based on four models of framing Pan & Kosicki namely: Syntactical Structure, Script Structure, Thematical Structure and Rhetorical Structure in six data or news from CNN website.

Abstract

This study tries to find out the use of perlocutionary acts in the Black Panther movie script, that is, how the characters’ utterances have some particular effects on other characters. The objective of this study is to describe the type of perlocutionary act which is used in the Black Panther movie script. This study uses a qualitative descriptive design. The source of data is obtained from the Black Panther movie script containing the dialog script of the characters’ utterances. The data are collected by reading the script intensively, watching the movie several times, and identifying, selecting, and coding the data. The data are analyzed by presenting the data, describing the data, interpreting the data, and concluding the data. The results show that the four types of the perlocutionary act which is used in the Black Panther movie script can be concluded based on the speakers’ communicative act purpose that can be either understood completely or can also be misunderstood by the interlocutor. The misunderstanding feedback of the interlocutors could be seen either in not realizing or not understanding the speakers’ utterances, the interlocutors intentionally tell lies or intentionally do not want to cooperate with the hearers, or the utterances’ meaning is clarified by the third speaker.

Abstract

This study used the Black Panther movie script by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole as the object of the study. The aim of this study is to find out the equivalences and differences of semantic relations used in the Black Panther movie script. This study used Norman Fairclough’s theory that was equivalence and difference of semantic relations. The method used in this study was descriptive qualitative study methods. The primary data was taken from the Black Panther movie script, and secondary data was taken from the audiovisual movie related to the material objects. Techniques of the data collection were downloading Black Panther movie scripts on the internet, reading all the movie scripts repeatedly and comprehensively, checking the words or utterances spoken in the movie script, identifying the semantic relations between clauses and sentences in the form of addition, elaborating, and contrasting in the movie scripts, and then coding the data. The result of the study showed that there were 55 data found, they were Elaboration consists of 14 data, Addition consists of 9 data, and Contrast consists of 32 data. Equivalences of semantic relations were used with the repetition in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences where the purpose has the same perspective or vision. While differences of semantic relations were used by writing a different meaning from the previous clause or sentence.

Abstract

This research investigates a tragic murder case from Knives Out movie of Harlan Thrombey case Fran was a servant in the Thrombey Family, and the investigator immediately investigated the case and emphasized the outline of the law, language, and criminal cases in the field of forensic linguistics. This research aimed to describe Police speak and Narrative Storytelling in Knives Out Movie Script (A Forensic Linguistic Perspective). The method used descriptive qualitative, the data was taken from the movie script and then collects every discovery through any existing data and analyzed by interpreting and describing the data. This result was to focus on how the police speak and narrative storytelling depicted in the movie “Knives Out 2019” by “Rian Johnson” was focused in terms of its forensic linguistics. In many investigative languages ​​that have not been revealed by the investigator in their interviews with each of the witnesses. This research describes the context of the data using Narrative and Storytelling and also how police detectives interview witnesses using Policespeak, including control over topic and interactional focus, establish motive, establish knowledge, rapport building, and control of topic navigation by interpreting and describing data using police speak and narrative storytelling theory to reveal the language of the police investigation. From the findings that Harlan Thrombey found died cause he was suicide, Harlan took the knife to kill himself however Harlan knew about which one will kill him by criminal, someone changed his morphine into overdoses and that was Ransom, his nephew.
