Abstract

ABSTRACT A language classroom must have the right environment for learning and cannot be classified as every other subject as it is a subject which assesses students' abilities in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. As language educators are obliged to use online platforms to teach and assess their students due the pandemic, there are many challenges that they face. Thus, the purpose of this study is to look into the issues that language instructors have when it comes to online learning and assessment. All language instructors at the School of Languages, Civilization, and Philosophy, Universiti Utara Malaysia's were given Google Form questionnaires to answer. The data was analysed using SPSS statistic version 26 and Smart PLS-SEM 3.2.8 with a sample volume of 40 (56 percent) (Ringle, Wende, & Becker, 2015). The descriptive statistics of the respondent's demographic profile were conducted using the SPSS statistics tool. Following that, the PLS statistical tool was used to examine the study's measurement and structural model. The measurement model test was undertaken to ensure that the constructs of this study had reached their reliability and validity. The findings show multiple applications and platforms, online marking, nonverbal evaluation, and plagiarism pose the greatest problem for language instructors in terms of technology and assessments. In terms of teaching, the issues are creativity, rapport, heavy workload, as well as lack of communication and participation from students. Keywords: Online teaching, Online assessment, Language instructors, Pandemic

Abstract

ABSTRACT The tradition of Nguras Sendhang (or draining Sendhang) is an hereditary heritage still held until today. Tradition of Nguras Sendhang exists in Klaruan Hamlet, Palur Village, Mojolaban Sub District, Sukoharjo Regency. The tradition is held annually in Besar month of Javanese year using a variety of sesaji (meal offrering), including:  nasi tumpeng gurih, golong asahan, jajan pasar, srundeng, sambel goreng, kerupuk, ingkung, peyek, jerohan (rempelo ati, usus, babat, kebuk, limpa), gudangan, pisang satu tangkep, bunga tujuh warna, takir tujuh. All sesajis were put on the building/pendhopo close to the sendhang. Kondangan rite was attended by all members of society and prayed for by modin or village elders. Sesajis were provided collectively by the members of society and having been prayed for (dikundangi/diujubke) some of sesajis were eaten together and the rest were brought home.  The uniqueness of nguras sendhang tradition is that after the kondhangan procession, the people may not bring their own sesaji home but they should bring others’ home. In the nguras sendhang tradition, there was also wayang performance held at night, the cost of which was paid collectively by the members of society. The performance is held along day and night with different narrators (dalangs) but same story. The uniqueness also lies in the narrators who were not allowed to take wage for their job. There is a myth that if this rite is not held, some disasters will occur, one of which is fire. House fire incidence occurring frequently makes life uneasy. Keywords: Ceremony, tradition, nguras sendhang, rite, myth

Communication in general has evolved tremendously in the 21st century, as it has made interactions with people all around the world much faster and easier. Social media is an important platform that allows these interactions to take place. Having multiple users from different countries influences the utilization of the first language (mother tongue), code-switching, code-mixing and borrowed words. Social media users have been shown to extensively use code-mixing and code-switching, particularly among speakers in the bilingual or multilingual society. Thus, this conceptual paper will attempt to deliberate on the use of code-switching as well as code-mixing among users of social media; namely people’s preference of social media, types and use of code-switching and code-mixing on social media, and lastly factors which influence the use of code-switching and code-mixing on social media. Keywords: Code switching; Code mixing; Sociolinguistics; Social media

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to analyze the struggle for women's idealism in modern Javanese literature. The approach used is ideological hegemony and content analysis methods to classify and analyze data from one classical Javanese literary work and two modern Javanese literary works, namely "Serat Wulang Putri" by Nyai Adisara, Novel "Larasati Modern" by Sri, "Katresnan" by Soeratman Sastradihardja, and "Nona Sekretaris" by Suparto Brata. The results of the study show that the development of women's idealistic thinking begins with an inner strength that is patient and accepts the rights of the husband, to become equal friends with men. In the classical period, a restriction only focused on the domestic realm. Even though the reality of the domestic realm still existed in later times, those who had education, independence, and personal wisdom became part of the renewal process. As for the older generation, there is friction over traditional customs in society. What used to be a fixed standard of action has been adapted by itself along with educational developments and foreign cultural influences. Keywords: Ideology, hegemony, women, Javanese Culture, Modern Javanese Literature.
