Leksema: Jurnal Bahasa dan Sastra (Leksema: Language and Literature Journal) is a double-blind peer-reviewed scholarly journal focusing on disseminating research results and conceptual works from language and literature fields of study by publishing them into scientific articles. The linguistic subdisciplines under the scope of this journal among others are general linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, discourse analysis, applied linguistics, and all other specific studies related to linguistics. Meanwhile, literature subdisciplines covered by this journal include, but are not limited to, prosaic, poetic, and dramatic studies, as well as literary criticisms along with their subordinates. This journal is also open for publishing scientific works from interdisciplinary studies related to either language or literature subjects. Since the publications of this journal are addressed to an international audience, the working language of the articles is English. However, the language as the subject of study can be from any language.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss how stuttering utterances are translated from English to Bahasa Indonesia. Data in the form of stuttering utterances spoken by Captain Haddock, a character in The Adventure of Tintin comic series, were collected to see how the translator decided to convert those utterances into Bahasa Indonesia. The method employed in this research is the qualitative-descriptive in which the data were taken from two sources(English and Bahasa Indonesia). The finding shows that there are three categories of stuttering initiator namely:  intoxicated, emotions, and situations. Each category is classified based on its types, namely repetitions, hesitations, and fillers. In addition, the finding also shows that each type of stuttering was placed in a different concept on its target language named shifting. It can further be classified into preserved, altered, and omitted. Each of them affects the meaning and the message of stuttering utterances in the translation version. Finally, the statistic indicates that every type of shifting gives a significant impact to the translation quality.

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out strategies in creating Indonesian humour materials. This research is a descriptive-qualitative research. In collecting the data, the researcher used listening technique by taping and writing. In analyzing data, this research applied equalizing reference method by comparing technique to support codification, reduction, presentation, and interpretation such as work design of qualitative research. As the result of this research, it has been found 8 strategies in creating Indonesian humour materials, namely: (1) exploiting the common truth that people already know, (2) changing constituents with his language experience, (3) putting false pronouns deliberately, (4) conveying something incomplete, (5) diverting different languages, (6) providing an unrelated response at all, (7) exploiting the language gap to distort its meaning, and (8) conveying something unnatural, absurd, even impressed controversy.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the use of abbreviations in communicating using Javanese. People prefer to use abreviations because they are shorter, faster, easier to remember, and easier to memorize. The purpose of this study is to classify the forms of abreviation, describe the patterns of the formation process, and describe the meanings of abreviations in the Javanese language, namely aferesis, syncope, and apocopy. Abreviation is a process of dating one or several parts of lexeme or a combination of lexemes that form a new form in the form of words. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach. The method of collecting data used proficient methods and referring methods. The data sources of this research were magazine articles in the form of written data of Javanese lexicons in the articles containing abreviations. In this study the abbreviations in the form of apheresis were found to be the highest number compared to abbreviations in the form of syncope and apocopy.

Abstract

This research aims at designing a learning model of critical reading based on Reciprocal Teaching. This research is a Research and Development (R&D) which applies the theory of Borg & Gall (2007). The subject is the second semester students that consist of 60 students in the academic year of 2017-2018. Data are obtained form interviews of lecturers and students, observation during implementation, and validation notes. The expert judgment was applied to validate the design of the learning model. The final product of the research is a learning model of critical reading by applying the strategy of Reciprocal Teaching consisted of four activities namely summarizing, questioning, clarifying, and predicting which is extended into six activities namely, predicting, questioning, clarifying, self-monitoring, summarizing, and evaluating. The model is considered to be supportive to the critical reading instructional since the students can complete the written tasks successfully.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the translation techniques used and assess the translation quality in the form of accuracy and acceptability assessment on respond-to-request speech acts of The Lost Hero and The Son of Neptune novel series written by Rick Riordan. This research used a qualitative-descriptive method whose data sources were the novel series and two raters who had aptitudes in assessing translation quality. The methods to collect and analyze the data were content analysis and Focus Group Discussion. The study found 11 translation techniques applied in translating the respond-to-request speech acts. They were establish equivalent, variation, borrowing, modulation, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, transposition, reduction, literal translation, and substitution. Dealing with the quality, the findings showed that most translations were accurate and acceptable. The majority of accurate translations used established equivalent technique. The less accurate translations applied modulation, amplification addition, discursive creation, literal translation and reduction whereas the inaccurate ones applied literal translation technique. Meanwhile, the majority of acceptable translations used establish equivalent and he less acceptable translations applied modulation, amplification addition, and discursive creation. Thus, this research proposes that the use of appropriate translation techniques is very important for the results of quality translation that is easily understood by the reader.

Abstract

The massive development of Google Translate (GT) is remarkable and there are many people all over the world use it. Yet, the texts that have been translated by GT still need post-editing by the human translator. This research aims to find the proportion that translator needed in post-editing when using GT in translating of informative and expressive text from English to Indonesia and what they need to pay attention in translating informative and expressive text using GT. The data in this research were words, phrases, and sentences that were analyzed using descriptive-comparative with error analysis at three different levels: accuracy and acceptability. The result shows that the proportion of post-editing for informative text is 5% for accuracy and 22% for acceptability, while in the expressive text, 33% for accuracy and 47% for acceptability. Humans need more effort in post-editing the expressive text because the structure of the sentences in the expressive text is more complex and longer. Furthermore, there are many CSI (Cultural Specific Items) found in the expressive text that makes the result unacceptable for TT readers. Another problem in using GT that the result of GT translation is literal while the expressive text has many of figurative meaning. It means that GT is acceptable for semantic translation. Thus, this research suggests GT can be used directly in translating informative text because informative, as long as the users conduct post-editing and the users should not use GT in translating expressive text directly except for decoding the semantic, pragmatic, and contextual meaning to find the suitable translation.

Abstract

This paper attempts to classify video game translation(VGT)studies from the perspectives of transtextuality, Genette’s term referring to the relationships a text weaves with other texts (1992). In regard to VGT studies, applying transtextuality signifies the textuality of video game and its transtextual relationship with other texts. Transtextuality is linear to the connectionist perspectives Globalization, Internationalization, Localization, and Translation (GILT) holds, a conventional concept that houses VGT, emphasizing on the intra and inter relationships between the four elements of GILT. This necessity to consider VGT as a part of GILT is the linearity to which transtextuality conforms VGT studies. Applying transtexuality, VGT studies are classified into transversality, transcreation, transfiguration, and transmediation. Transversalityreferstothestudiesaimed at applying translation theories in VGT.Transcreation refers to VGT studies that focus on cultural issues in relation to video game mechanics. Transfiguration refers to VGT studies that incorporate game studies as a response to certain VGT issues. Transmediation refers to VGT studies that focus on the influence of video game media toward the translation aspects of video games. These four classifications construct a quadrant which opens probabilities for VGT studies to depart from the combination of each element.

Abstract

This study focused on the structures of requesting imperative sentences of Djarum 76 cigarette advertisement. The researchers tried to explain the types, structures, and markers on verbal requests which appear on Djarum 76 advertisements on TV during 2009-2014. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were requesting sentences in the advertisements of Djarum 76 which wre taken from Youtube website. The process of data collection involved watching, listening, and note taking technique. Meanwhile, for data analysis, the researchers applied distributional method. The results of this study show that: (1) not all requesting sentences on Djarum 76 advertisements omitted their subjects which referred to the speakers; (2) the requests could be expressed in different ways, such as by using a minor sentence and not a clause which refer to the  previous sentence as well as using nominal phrase (e.g.kuda poni)  as what appeared on six advertisements. In addition, requesting sentences on advertisement of Djarum 76 had some different markers for requesting sentences compared to what is stated in the existing theories, such in the use of the words mau, pengin, dan jadikan contrasted to the common term minta.
