Abstract

Complex and diverse as it may seem, peace education in a nutshell can be viewed as an approach that embeds theory, practice, and research of numerous fields of study that serve as off-shot for interests on respect for tolerance, understanding diversity, and respect for human rights. With this research, it could be noted that the context could also be employed as a vehicle in advancing socio-cultural trends and issues regarding the country under study. It provides opportunities for meaningful interaction and discourse beyond language, grammar, and vocabulary. The main purpose of the study is to describe the experiences and perspectives of Filipino graduate students regarding learning Korean as a foreign language with emphasis on peace and unification concepts. The present study was conducted using qualitative research case study through content analysis. This case study involved Filipino graduate students in a Korean language class as the participants. The results showed that foreign, diplomatic, and political issues have reached the classrooms. The students did not just consume theories, but the practice of these concepts was highly sought. Topics focusing on peace and unification were seen to be critical and crucial for the contemporary era as well for the future of humanity. The present study concludes how peace and unification can be aimed at nurturing students that mindset that cultivate values and attitudes towards tolerance, understanding, and sensitivity.

Abstract

Language fossilization happens when learners do not progress anymore in certain features of the target language, especially in interlanguage learning context. this investigation sought to answer the following research questions: (a) What are the linguistic features in Korean language that the KFL Filipino learner participants are fossilized in? (b) Why do they arrive at such state of fossilization?. The qualitative study used narrative approach to identify the linguistic features that the KFL Filipino learner participants are fossilized in, and the reasons behind such language phenomenon, based on their learning narratives. There were twelve (12) KFL Filipino learners who participated in the study. Their narratives on KFL learning were analyzed, coded, and arranged to identify these fossilizations and the reasons behind. Findings reveal that the KFL (a) fossilizations are in sound-character correspondence, orthographical-phonological metamorphosis, language syntax, verb conjugation and suffixation in context, and vocabulary difficulty and (b) the reasons of fossilization are weak memory, language disorder, Hangeul character resemblance and  subtle differences, differences of L1 and L2 sentence patterns to Korean language syntax, lack of interest on sources of language exposure, discourse opportunities with Korean language speakers, and fear of language use due to uncertainty. These results contribute to improvement of foreign language instruction.

Abstract

In the current era, knowledge and technology are rapidly advancing. The rapid development of technology makes it easier for people to access the world. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Learn Korean with BTS teaching materials in improving Korean reading skills with a sample of 46 Korean Language Education students year of 2020. The data collection technique used test instruments and questionnaires totalling 20 valid and reliable items each. This study used a quasi-experimental research method and the non-equivalent control group design. The results showed that the experimental class got an average pre-test result of 60.87 and an average post-test result of 85.43, while the control class got an average pre-test result of 62.83 and an average post-test result of 68.04. The paired sample t-test was used to determine differences in learning outcomes and the test results showed the significance value (2-tailed) was 0.00 (0.05), which means that there is a significant difference in the results of students’ learning before and after using the Learn Korean with BTS teaching materials. The results of the independent sample t-test show a significance value (2-tailed) was 0.00 (0.05), which means that there is a significant difference in learning outcomes between students who used Learn Korean with BTS teaching materials and those who used traditional learning materials. The results of the questionnaire show that students' opinions about learning using the Learn Korean with BTS teaching materials are positive.

Abstract

After the Korean War ended in 1953, Western culture rooted in the United States dominated South Korean society. This study analyses the influence of Confucianism norms on the miniskirt policy in South Korea in 1973. The Miniskirt policy is one of the policies contained in the Minor Offences Act or Gyeongbeomjoecheobeolbeop which was passed in 1973. In this law, one of the violations is overexposure, which refers to women wearing miniskirts. At that time, the police usually carried a ruler on patrol and often stopped women who wore skirts to measure the length. If the skirt worn has a hemline of 17 cm above the knee, the woman will be penalized. This policy was made because the view of the miniskirt does not fit the norms and traditions of the Korean women clothing, which creates controversy. Therefore, the research question in this study is how Confucianism norms justify the miniskirt policy for Korean women. This study uses a descriptive analysis method with the help of literature study. This study aims to explain Confucianism norms as the influence of the establishment of the South Korean miniskirt policy in 1973. The results show that the establishment of the miniskirt policy in 1973 was triggered by Confucianism norms, especially dress etiquette for Korean women which were regulated by Confucian officials. This norm was re-emphasized during the Park Chung-hee era through this policy, where Confucianism was a value that was applied to his government to strengthen the identity of the Korean nation.
