Abstract

Song lyrics are literary works that comprise linguistic symbols that possess meaning. This study examines the meaning of the turtle symbol used in the lyrics of a Korean song by Davichi named Geobugi. The purpose of this study is to describe the meaning of turtle in the lyrics of the song Geobugi by Davichi. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method to systematically describe the meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth using the theory of semiotics by Roland Barthes. The research results showed that the turtle in the lyrics of the song Geobugi symbolizes cautiousness, patience, self-reflection, hope, and self-defense. The turtle symbol depicted in the lyrics of this song conveys the message that humans can move slowly and patiently, do self-reflection, remain optimistic in difficult times, and have their defense mechanisms. The discovery of the meaning of myth provides a new perspective that something contradictory can be perceived as an option rather than a negative thing, which differs from the general perception of the dynamic and fast-moving Korean society.

Abstract

Lexical cohesion is considered an essential element in understanding a discourse. However, the forms of lexical cohesion in commercial Korean advertisements are still under-explored. This study aims to examine 1) the forms of lexical cohesion found in the commercial advertisements of five Korean-language magazines; 2) the most dominant form of lexical cohesion in the advertisements; and 3) the functions of using the lexical cohesion forms in the advertisements. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The research data were collected through careful comprehension and note-taking technique. The results demonstrated that five forms of lexical cohesion were found in the advertisements: repetition, synonym, antonym, hyponym, and collocation. Repetition was the most frequently occurred lexical cohesion form (n=30 times). Most of the commercial advertisements analyzed employed repetition to emphasize the advantages of the advertised product or service. This results indicate that the analyzed commercial advertisements are considerably cohesive. It can be seen from the use of lexical cohesion forms that makes the discourse of commercial advertising holistic and intelligible.

Abstract

Food cannot be separated from our daily lives. The meaning of food in people's lives is to fulfil the needs of the body and other forms of culture. This study compares the formation of Korean and Indonesian food names. This study uses a descriptive research method and uses a morphological study as an analysis. The data used in this study are Korean and Indonesian food names from various relevant sources. This research was conducted as an introduction to culture through the culinary arts and as a form of developing the science of morphology. This study compares the formation and pattern used in naming Korean food names with the formation and pattern of naming Indonesian food names. This research produces formation patterns based on word categories. In Korean food, names produce 12 patterns of formation and in Indonesian food produce 5 patterns of formation.

Abstract

Translation is one of the branches of applied linguistics as part of activities in communication between people with various languages. The results of this translation activity are then called translation. However, in every activity, there must be obstacles as well as the translation process. This research discussed the translation shift that occurred in the translation of the webtoon Nae Aidineun Gangnammiin into I Am Gangnam Beauty. The purpose of this research is to present the results of the translation shift analysis of both the text and dialogue that occurs in the I Am Gangnam Beauty webtoon according to its type, and the results of the analysis of the translation stage of the I Am Gangnam Beauty webtoon using the theory of Nida and Taber. The data was collected by noting any translation shift found and then grouping them according to their type and stage of translation. The results showed that the most significant translation shift was skewing of information as much as 37 data (41%), gain of information as much as 29 data (32%), and loss of information as much as 24 (27%). Then the translation stages where the most translation shifts were found were the analysis of 40 data (45%), the transfer of 35 data (39%), and the restructuring of 14 data (16%).

Abstract

Speech is a form of expressing thoughts in the form of words addressed to many people. In a speech, the speaker usually expresses one’s attitude or assessment toward someone, as called modality. This study discussed the modalities contained in the campaign speech of presidential candidate, Moon Jae In, at the presidential election of the Republic of Korea in 2017. Through this speech, Moon Jae In could win the hearts of the Republic of Korea people and win the election in 2017. The theory used in this research was the modality theory, proposed by Sun Hye Ok (2016). This study used descriptive qualitative methods, namely reporting and assessing the linguistic data through modality theory as an analytical tool. The results of the analysis showed that there were 63 forms of modality in it. There were 6 forms 명제양태 (proposition modality) and 57 forms 사건양태 (event modality). The percentage of data 명제양태 (prediction modality) was 10% and 사건양태 (event modality) was 90%, so it could be said that in his speech, Moon Jae In revealed more forms of disclosure for the future. Those forms were evidenced through sentences that contain abilities, musts, and goals for the future.

Abstract

The process of conveying meaning between two languages is called translation. This qualitative research study aims to depict changes in form and meaning during the translation of subtitles from the Korean variety show "Battle Trip (배틀 트립) episode 14," titled "Trip to Bandung," as it transitions from Korean to Indonesian. Additionally, this study delves into the underlying factors that contribute to these translation shifts. This research used a theory of translation shift and translation meaning shift. The data were collected by jotting down the phrases, clauses, or sentences in the subtitles that contained form and meaning shifts and classifying them into an analysis table, based on the type of translation shift. The results showed that from 147 units of analysis, there were 167 translation shifts. Almost all types of form shifts were found in this study. The most commonly occurring type of translation shift was category shifts, especially the structure and unit shifts. This was due to the differences in grammatical rules, sentence structure, and language units between the Korean and Indonesian languages. Meanwhile, the concept of meaning shift is categorized into two distinct groups: generic-to-specific transitions and shifts stemming from divergent cultural perspectives. The most dominant meaning shift was the generic-to-specific category because the translator used equivalents that were not too close but the meaning conveyed did not change. In addition, the difficulties in finding the close equivalents due to the differences in the cultural background were another factor in the occurrences of translation shifts.

Abstract

Language style is a domain of semantics, used to explore the meaning conveyed by the writers to attract viewers to the texts. Nevertheless, efforts to delve into the manifestation of language style in advertising genre are still not extensively done. This study identifies and describes the types of language style along with its function and meaning, contained in the Korean beverage advertising slogans. The data of this research were the slogans of Korean beverage advertisements that aired in 2019 through YouTube. A descriptive qualitative method was employed by collecting and recording the data. The process continued with the identification of the types language style along with its function and meaning. Finally, the analyzed data were elaborated descriptively. The results revealed that from 30 Korean beverage advertising slogans, 건조체 (geonjoche) was the most frequently occurred style because the simple writing style was only expressed without modifiers with clear sentences. It gave an objective impression that focused on conveying meaning. The affective meaning was the most common meaning found as it related to the listeners or readers’ reaction to the use of words or sentences in the slogans. Furthermore, referential function was found to be the most common one of the language styles identified in the slogans. The reason for this is that the advertising slogans are centered on and used to inform the products. Therefore, such function can persuade the viewers to buy and use the advertised products.

Abstract

In August 2018, Indonesia hosted the Asian Games Jakarta – Palembang 2018. After hosting in 1962, Indonesia has had the theme "Asia's Energy", meaning that Indonesia is expected to be a source of energy support for some Asian countries on the world stage. The study aimed to discover the similarities and differences shown on the articles and how Indonesia is represented through lexicon, grammar, discourse practices, grammar, and discourse practices in online news articles written by the Korean Republic’s media. This study used a critical discourse analysis theory of Norman Fairclough with a descriptive qualitative method, developing critical discourse analysis based on formal-systemic linguistic assumptions. Based on the study results, it is observed that the published news articles during the opening were the articles giving a primary focus on Indonesia compared to the published articles during the event and closing, data was collected based on online news articles during the 2018 Jakarta Palembang Asian Games using a literature study of 15 articles. There is also a finding regarding text production in articles of Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018 that were not influenced by outside intervention other than the media itself. Then, based on the text analysis results, it is discovered that Indonesian representations were divided into the viewpoint of a country and the viewpoint of the host of the Asian Games Jakarta Palembang 2018. In addition, the implications of this research are to find out Indonesia’s representation in the news media of the Republic of Korea during the 2018 Asian Games.

Abstract

Korean students and beginner-level Korean learners often use harsh language because they often learn from shows that use coarse language. Therefore, this study of euphemism aimed to describe (1) variations of euphemisms in the form of words or sentences, taboos, cultural traits, social discrimination, and negative situations (2) the functions of using euphemisms in the book Ancient Korean Indonesian Stories 1. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data display, and pulling a conclusion or verification. Data validity was obtained from data triangulation. The data were analyzed based on the theory of the form and function of euphemism by Kim Mi Hyeong. This research shows the following results. First, the euphemisms of words 86%, and sentences 14%. Forms of euphemisms based on taboo is 71%, (2) social discrimination 10%, (3) negative situations 19%, and zero data were found in the form of cultural traits. Second, the euphemism function (1) the self-protection function is 9%, (2) the purification function is 43%, which is the most dominant function contained in the data in the object of this study. (3) control maintenance and social order 29%, (4) protection role 5%, (5) and function change in meaning 14%, and there was no data found on the function of the need for new terminology.

Abstract

Complex and diverse as it may seem, peace education in a nutshell can be viewed as an approach that embeds theory, practice, and research of numerous fields of study that serve as off-shot for interests on respect for tolerance, understanding diversity, and respect for human rights.With this research, it could be noted that the context could also be employed as a vehicle in advancing socio-cultural trends and issues regarding the country under study. It provides opportunities for meaningful interaction and discourse beyond language, grammar, and vocabulary. The main purpose of the study is to describe the experiences and perspectives of Filipino graduate students regarding learning Korean as a foreign language with emphasis on peace and unification concepts. The present study was conducted using qualitative research case study through content analysis. This case study involved Filipino graduate students in a Korean language class as the participants. The results showed that foreign, diplomatic, and political issues have reached the classrooms. The students did not just consume theories, but the practice of these concepts was highly sought. Topics focusing on peace and unification were seen to be critical and crucial for the contemporary era as well for the future of humanity. The present study concludes how peace and unification can be aimed at nurturing students that mindset that cultivate values and attitudes towards tolerance, understanding, and sensitivity.
