Abstract

This research is motivated by the presence of international students from various countries with diverse cultures and varying language abilities compared to Indonesia. International students are those who come from outside Indonesia, meaning that Indonesian is not their first language. International BIPA students aim to master the four language skills, one of which is speaking. Therefore, international students need to have the ability to speak effectively and correctly in verbal or oral communication. The research aims to analyze the forms of grammar and vocabulary usage in the verbal communication of international BIPA students at Andalas University. This research is qualitative in nature with a descriptive methodology. The research respondents are international students currently engaged in learning activities at Andalas University. Data collection is conducted through observation, interviews, recording techniques, and note-taking. Data analysis is carried out using the interactive data analysis method developed by Miles and Huberman. Based on the data analysis and discussion, it is found that international BIPA students can understand and use grammar and vocabulary effectively in oral communication. They can comprehend and use grammar and vocabulary in spoken language, such as personal pronoun usage, noun phrase structure, negation words, simple sentence construction, question word usage, demonstrative pronoun usage, the verb "ada" (there is/there are), preposition usage, affix verbs, adverb usage, conjunction usage, expressions and greetings, and vocabulary related to general topics. However, international students face difficulties in terms of grammar, particularly regarding the accurate pronunciation and sound pronunciation when communicating verbally. These challenges arise from cultural and language differences with their home countries. In this research, two forms of grammar usage were not found in spoken communication: the use of gradable adjectives and the use of position and location. Keywords: International BIPA students, Verbal communication skills, Grammar and vocabulary usage and Language challenges and cultural differences

Abstract

The history of the 1998 reformation has become a momentum for the implementation of Indonesian democracy after the authoritarian regime of the New Order Soeharto. Through a study of three major journals, it is seen how in Indonesia's democratic system it can be positively interpreted that mass organizations can grow. Even so, there are several actions of mass organizations that lead to the nuances of violence through their various actions. If using Marx's perspective, the state will regard this resistance as a threat to democracy. Another dimension is present when trying to understand that local mass organizations with violent radicals ideally have the aim of protecting local matters from being eroded by external interests that can threaten the identity and local community. Therefore, violence is understood as a way for them to defend and fight against things that are considered threatening. State recognition of locality- based identities and groups, including how mass organizations represent the existence of locality-based communities, is important. Recognition at this level should involve and pay attention to local wisdom so that policy as a product has authority in its application in the community.

Abstract

students enrolled in nursing study programs with a focus on emergency characteristics. The investigation encompasses both target needs and learning needs, emphasizing the specific language requirements in the nursing field. English for Nursing falls under the domain of English for Specific Purposes (ESP), designed to cater to learners' specific language needs, fostering more effective and comprehensive teaching and learning. By aligning English instruction with the demands of the nursing discipline, non-English program students will gain familiarity with English tailored to nursing contexts. The ESP approach aims to address the specific language acquisition challenges faced by learners with distinct objectives. Data collection involves questionnaires administered to 45 students and direct interviews with emergency nursing lecturers. Findings reveal the significance of learning English for improved communication within the context of conversations or practical applications. The identified English materials concentrate on terms relevant to nursing study programs, particularly those associated with emergency characteristics, becoming the focal points of instruction. Additionally, materials focusing on enhancing listening and speaking skills emerge as key priorities in the learning process. The outcomes of this study are anticipated to serve as a valuable reference for the design and development of syllabi, specifically tailored to English for Nursing courses.

Abstract

This research aims to elaborate on the useful role of social media as a campaign channel in preventing stunting in Indonesia. The digital era means that various daily activities of citizens are greatly influenced by social media. The benefits of social media are then used by mothers of toddlers as a channel for information, interaction, participation, decentralization, transparency and digital accountability. Social media can then be used to disseminate various information about nutrition and prevention so that it can then become educational for the public. As a result, information generated by social media has created dynamic and participatory interaction patterns. This is due to the flexibility of the features possessed by various social media platforms, especially for use as the main channel for civic information. This research uses an explanatory qualitative approach with in-depth interview techniques and observations of mothers of toddlers in the Serang Regency area, Banten Province. The research results found that social media has played a role as the main information channel in strengthening knowledge about local food and nutrition for toddlers. This research also found that social media is very effective for use as a promotional channel and stunting prevention campaign.
