Abstract

An action-research of providing the positive incentive for women farmer in order to apply the environmental friendly fertilizer in Tondano Lake Catchment Area has been conducted in three villages of Tondano Lake intensive areas. The actions were recruitment of women farmer participants, participants training, and the providing of agricultural capital for participants, while the researches were the examination and the study on the effects of the incentive-oriented actions on the women farmer participation in application of organic fertilizer in Tondano lake watershed. The results showed that positive incentive in the form of capital for cropping activities was the main reason that attracted women farmers to participate in environmental conservation endeavors. It was concluded that positive incentive should be considered in any sustainable environmental management effort.

Abstract

Diazinon is one of insecticides used to control pests and other organisms. However, diazinon may have negative impact to aquatic ecosystem since its application in agriculture is uncontrolled. The present experiment aims to determine the effect of diazinon (insecticide) in sublethal concentration on embryonic development of sea urchin Echinometra mathaei. The experiment was designed by using toxicity test technique in which a number of eggs and sperms of the sea urchin were exposed into seawater with 0.3, 0.6, and 3 ppm of diazinon concentrations and a control (0 ppm). Percentage of developing larvae were accounted and time of each embryonic development stage was recorded. The result shows the range of sublethal concentration of diazinon is 0.06 to 0.6 ppm. Mean percentage of developed larvae for concentration of 0.3, 0.6, 3 and the control are 29.23, 40.07, 62.11, and 82.28, respectively. Mean time for the first, second, third, fourth, morula, hatching and larvae development stages are 87.41, 158.08, 188.75, 227.83, 269.83, 523.75, and 2122.41 minutes, respectively. Even though diazinon in sublethal concentration was not affect the development time, it is for mortality of larvae.

Abstract

Tourism development of Ujong Blang Lhokseumawe beach gives negative impact to physical beach, such as abration and the changes of shore-area and shoreline. The samples of this study were assigned by purposive sampling. The data were analysed by using comparative method and overlay map of the land-use area of Ujong Blang beach. The result shows the tourism development of Ujong Blang Lhokseumawe beach gives negative impact on the shift of shore-area functions as protection area to economic activity area. The consequency of the changes is the fasten of abration process that was marked by the decreasing of shore-line, in which the shore-line more closer to landward area than before.

Abstract

Since 1900, gold mining activity has been conducted in northern Sulawesi. The activity can be grouped into (1) small-scale, and (2) large-scale activities. Both activities may increase income for local government, opportunity for labor and investment, which give positive impact to other economic activities. However, the mining activity may give negative impact to environment, such as landscape changes, destruction of watershed, potentially as a source of pollutants and other dangerous and toxic substances. Mercury (Hg) and cyanide (CN) are two of pollutants generate from mining activity. Uncontrolled uses of both (mercury and cyanide) pollutants may pollute the environment and the pollutants may accumulate into marine organism food chance.

Abstract

The objective of this research is trying to find out the possibility to use farm conserve system in villages around mountain in capital city of Kabupaten Sangihe Talaud, while the benefit of this research are to give contribution in science on (1) the method of society around the mountain adopted to potential marginal area, and giving response to others development sector as tourism and land transportation around; (2) this research hopefully will help the local government to solve the problem of development, such as planning system, research and development. The method of this research is agro-ecosystem analysis. The result shows that the people composition according to age group is highly concentrated between 18 and 47 years old and 14.339 people (49%) is as productive manpower, 71.91% is as farmer which can be classified as farmer owner land about 4.499 people (30,93%), and farmer worker 4.506 people (30,98%). Seemingly, 71.91% of people depend on farming in order to fulfill their living needs. The land area that relevant for development society partnership consist of (1) Pilot Project Unit of Usaha Pelestarian Sumber daya Alam/Usaha Pertanian Menetap (UP-UPSA/UPM); (2) Development of Hutan Rakyat (HR); (3) Hutan Rakyat dengan pola Agroforesty (HRA); (4) Kebun Rakyat (KR); (5) Budidaya Tanaman di Bawah Tegakan (BTBT); (6) Persuteraan Alam (PA);(7). Rehabilitasi Mangrove (hutan bakau); (8) Perlebahan.

Abstract

The use of mercury (Hg) in gold mining activity causes the heavy metal enters into environment. The main pathway of the mercury enter into the environment is due to mercury-containing slurry from rinsing and amalgam processes. Tatelu Rondor Village, Dimembe, Minahasa Regency, has 300 ha of coconut plantation area, which produces about 1800 coconut per area. More than 50% of the gold mining activity is located nearby the coconut plantation area. Present research is conducted in coconut plantation area of Tatelu Rondor Village where since 1998 the gold mining activity occurs. Sampling has done one per two months on coconuts from the mining area and a control location. The sampling area was divided by 5 observed points, such as a center of tailing disposal area, tailing stream area 1 and 2, surrounding area of tailing disposal, and a control location.

Abstract

The major agents of biological destruction of coral reefs can be divided into grazers, etchers and borers. Each of these groups is reviewed on a world wide basis, together with the mechanisms by which they destroy the coral substrate. Rate of bioerosion attributed to major agents of grazers, etchers and borers are given, together with limitations of some of the measurements. Factors which may be responsible for this variability are discussed. Although the review concentrates mainly on present day reefs, some attempt is made to consider the impact of bioerosion on older reefs.

Abstract

The sensitive, accurate and valid methods for metal contamination are important to control and monitor metal pollution which is dangerous to marine ecosystem, alter sustainable living environment, and human being. This is based on facts that dangerous wastewater substances (in Indonesia is called B3) is increase as industrialization in all sectors increases, the B3 wastes are discharged to marine environment, and, however, it is still categorize as ‘environmentally save’ wastes based on Indonesian Wastewater Quality Standard (IWQS).The phenomenon of metals concentrated into the tissues of marine organisms was found related to the role of metal-binding proteins. The function of proteins is to bind many metal ions, these proteins are named as metallothioneins. The proteins are a group of specific non-enzyme proteins that are increasingly being demonstrated to play a central role in metal metabolism.IWQS is not a inflexible requirement, but it could be revised and developed based on some circumstances and recent technology. It is a matter a fact that determination of IWQS is addressed not only for ecosystem protection but also protection to entire living environment and human being as an actor in environmental conservation. Therefore, sensitive, accurate and valid methods for measuring pollution levels are needed as an alternative to complete the IWQS. So, metallothionein as discussed above, could be as one of the method. In addition, the method can also be applied to determine the dangerous and poisonous substances (B3), completing the toxicity tests and other method in IWQS.
