Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to transform education by enabling personalized learning experiences, fostering collaboration and communication, and cultivating critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, ethical issues such as privacy, bias, and the impact of technology on values and beliefs must be considered. This paper explores the implications of integrating AI into education from the perspective of Ignatian pedagogy, a Jesuit-inspired educational approach rooted in certain principles and values. Drawing on a comprehensive review of existing literature on AI in education and Ignatian pedagogy, this paper investigates how AI can support the goals of Ignatian pedagogy while addressing ethical concerns. The paper presents examples of AI use in educational settings, highlighting the potential benefits and ethical challenges. Notably, there is a gap in research on how AI aligns with the values and goals of different educational approaches, including Ignatian pedagogy. To address this gap, this paper examines the potential of AI to support Ignatian pedagogy and identifies critical ethical considerations that should be addressed. Our findings suggest that AI has the potential to support Ignatian pedagogy, but such integration requires thoughtful consideration of ethical issues. Further research is needed to evaluate the potential of AI to support Ignatian pedagogy and other educational approaches while addressing ethical concerns such as privacy, bias, and the impact of technology on values and beliefs.

Abstract

This study investigated kinds and reasons of code-switching employed by the EFL learners at one of the Universities in Riau Province, Indonesia, with a qualitative approach. The code-switching data were collected based on natural interactions that occurred naturally through phone calls. The participants of this study were the 7th semester students of the English Department at one of the universities in Riau province. The natural interactions through phone calls were audiotaped, and the audios were transcribed. Furthermore, the transcribed audio got classified and analyzed based on its types and functions. Besides, interviews were also conducted in this study to gather the reasons for the use or functions of code-switching based on the learners’ perspectives. Thenceforth, the classified data was validated by the experts of code-switching to make sure the data was ideally correct. The findings showed that learners used Inter-sentential code- switching and Intra-sentential code-switching. Dealing with the second research aims, the reasons for code-switching was used to clarify speech content, to talk about particular topics, to use repetition to clarify something, to show emphatic, to provide emphasis on something and also for lexical needs. However, the EFL learners at one of the Universities in Riau Province, Indonesia, not only used an English-Indonesian switching but also Indonesian-English switching in English- based conversation.

Abstract

This research was aimed at analysing students’ strategies in giving compliments. This was descriptive qualitative research using a qualitative approach accompanied by descriptive statistics. This research involved 39 EFL students as the participants in the academic year 2019/2020 selected using cluster random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a DCT (Discourse Completion Test) containing a number of situations where the students were expected to give their compliment. The result showed that the students used many kinds of strategy in giving compliments. Explicit strategy was the most used by the students. Furthermore, the single explicit strategy appeared the most within overall strategies that appeared in the DCT. This implied that the students prefer to give a direct and simple compliment. One strategy in giving compliment appeared out of the classification which is congratulation attached to unbound semantic formula.
