Abstract

The article tries to paraphrase the apostolic message of Pope Francis on the occasion of the World Mission Sunday 2016 entitled “Missionary Church, Witness of Mercy” by highlighting some key points which are particularly important for fostering and keepingalive the missionary impulse of the Church. As sanctorum communio, the Church is by all means also called to ‘go out’ to the world, to share the joy of the Gospel and God’s tenderness and compassion, particularly where injustices, wars, and humanitarian crises prevail. The Pontiff reminds that this hard work needsa lot of patience and effort with maternal services or with that of the merciful vine-dresser of the Gospel. In so-doing the missionary Church is witnessing God’s mercy

Abstract

Suffering is a reality that everyone endures as an integral part of his/her life. As the part of human life, suffering is inevitable. For some people, suffering shakes their faith in the Benevolent God. They asked, “Why does not God eliminate the suffering if He is benevolent and omnipotent?” This paper is going to persuade the Christians to make sense of their suffering by examining the views of Scripture and the documents of the Church (especially Salvifici Doloris). Both sources show that there are a lot of meanings behind the suffering. From such explanations, we would say that suffering also serves for good. The writer invites the faithfuls to be “in peace” with their suffering. People are led to interpret suffering as a precious and valuable gift. In so-doing, people would be able to remain faithful, even become more steadfast in the midst of their suffering. The concept of God as “Father” would also helps people to be more enduring in Christian faith.

Abstract

The article highlights one of the local wisdoms of the ethnic Lio Mego, namelyloka po’o. The tradition is a ritual for the fertility of the soil. Loka po’o offers a meaningful value when people have been discussing about ecology. In the ritualloka po’o, the Lio Mego are convinced that the nature is just a reflection of the Highest Reality. The nature has a soul, namely the anima which is supposed to be preserved and not to be exploited blindly. Human beings are participating in the nature. Besides ecological aspect, the loka po’o tradition also offers another values such as divine aspect (divinity), unity, as well as democracy. Such values are surely denoting the values of Pancasila, the five basic principles of the country, the Republic of Indonesia

Abstract

Based on his personal experiences in North Sumatra, the writer offers in this article some insightful ideas in doing mission and being missionary crossculturally. First of all, every missionary should realise himself as guest in any mission field. What is important for a guest is just learning to know the local people and their cultural values. As a Divine Word Missionary, the writer underlines the legacy of St. Arnold Janssen, the founder of the Society of the Divine Word, namely interculturity. Internally, members of the Society are united from various ethnic groups, languages, and cultures into a fertile and dynamic community. Externally, everybody has been trained and conditioned to be able to adjust himself into any new cultural milieu. Involve in mission such as in North Sumatra, every new missionary is expected to open himself to the Batak culture. To be a good missionary among the Batak, then, one must know quite well the Batak cultural values and speak their language. There is no other strategy for being a good missionary, namely a good preacher, than to first of all be a good learner, a good disciple. That is what exactly means an intercultural person.

Abstract

Identification of a group of people does not come out of the blue. There is a long history and a lengthy process which makes a group identity comes up. In Indonesia, the ethnic Chinese, formerly called ‘orang-orang non-pribumi’ (nonnatives, immigrants), are one of many groups of people with their ambiguous identity. Such ambiguity of the ethnic Chinese remains so up to the present day, even though the term ‘Cina’ has been altered into ‘Tionghoa’’.Their presence has been considered as ‘the others’ amidst the people of the country and their identity as ‘immigrants’ has been perpetuated. Nobody knows when such stigma will be over. Although they have been in the country for generations, their status as ‘immigrants’ seems unchanged. The article tries to explore the background of the natives-immigrants stereotype and the discourse on ethnic Chinese identity in the post-Soeharto era.

Abstract

The writer tries to analyse the encounter between Christian faith and the local culture particularly that of Muna culture of Southeast Sulawesi. Formerly the missionaries seemed to come in with their particular theological framework, while the local people live in their inherited way of life and traditional rites, such as worshipping their ancestors, ritual to sacred places, etc. The missiological challenges would be, how the Christian faith could be accepted fully by the local people and the Christian values could also support the dynamic of the local culture. The answer would be openness of both sides. From the Church’s side, it is actually a challenge in fostering contextual theology, particularly following the anthropological model. Opennes to learn the richness of the local culture is jus a must.
