Abstract

In eight novels the Javanese writer Ayu Utami (born 1968) has presented critical attacks on doctrines and practices of the major religions in Indonesia. The two books that describe the spiritual struggle of the Catholic priest Saman (1998-2002) call for a religion that is more active in the political arena, but leaves sexual rules to the individual people. The novel Bilangan Fu (2008) condemns the monopoly of the great religions in favour of local and individual spirituality. This is developed in a series of novels of which two more have already appeared. A third cycle of three more or less autobiographic novels (2003-2013) sketch her personal quest from atheism towards a critical but positive spirituality condemning a clerical and monopolist trend in Catholicism. Utami’s criticism of the great religions is external (more players in the field should be recognised) and internal (religious leaders should have more modest claims towards their faithful and leave more space for personal choice).

Abstract

The current article intends to discuss interculturality as the real condition where members of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) carry out their mission ad extra as well as live out their lives ad intra in their religious communities. The tern interculturality is not really new for most of the members, since the rationale of the foundation of the Society in 1875 was exactly for cross-cultural mission, which means internationality or interculturality. The last General Chapter of the Society (2012) has just rediscovered interculturality as its heritage and mission commitment since the time of Saint Arnold Janssen, its founder. At the same time, interculturality was (and is) regarded as a particular gift of God to the Society. The article tries to put forward that it is very important for all the members to be competent in their intercultural life and mission. Training in intercultural competence, then, is a must in all levels of religious-missionary formation.

Abstract

The Catholic Church of Indonesia has been struggling for a long time to be a self-sufficient Church. For centuries she has been part of Christian mission. The time came when the Pontiff, Pope John XXIII declared and founded the Hierarchy of the Catholic Church of Indonesia in 1961. From that time on, the Catholics of Indonesia (the clergy and the laity) have been working hand in hand to become self-sufficiency. To a certain sense, the Church has reached the objective, particularly in expressing her very identity, namely being missional community. The article argues that the exact way of doing mission in Indonesia context is to be and to live together for the common good of the multicultural society. Therefore, the two qualities of Church in this country, namely missional and dialogical, are primarily characterised the self-sufficient Church of Indonesia.

Abstract

The article explores the inherent relation between faith and culture in human life, individually as well as communally. The writer particularly analyses the Christian faith in the Javanese context, where he finds out that there is a close connection between the ascetic-mystical practice in Christianity and the one of the Javanese tradition, namely Serat Wedhatama. Serat Wedhatama (‘ajaran utama’, ‘prime instruction’ or ‘primary teaching’, which means ‘exalted wisdom’) was composed by Kanjeng Gusti Pangeran Adipati Arya Mangkunegara IV (KGPAA Mangkunegara IV,1809–1881), a prominent poet of Surakarta Principality, Central Java. Wedhatama praises morality (wirya, arta, winasis – dignity, wealth, knowledge) which is consistent to the mystical Javanese Islam, in contrast to the more self-consciously Orthodox Islamic community. With regard to religion (agama: ageming aji), with its four levels of sembah raga, sembah cipta, sembah suksma, sembah rasa (worshipping God with one’s body, mind, and soul to be in unity with the Almighty), Wedhatama seems to be correspondent with the long ascetic-mystical Christian tradition. The writer argues that the encounter of the two traditions is precisely the excellent way of being a true Javanese Christian as well as witnessing to the society at large.

Abstract

As a plural and multicultural society, a visionary and ideal state, Indonesia has been struggling to organise its diverse constellations of ethnic, religion, race, and group for the one, just, and peaceful society. Unfortunately, conflicts and violence among the people have come up from time to time; in particular, the writer mentions the happenings around the end of the New Era (Orde Baru) and the emerging era of Reformation. Within this very challenging context that the Church has been called to actualise her mission. How can the Church of Indonesia present her message meaningfully and work out fruitfully for the betterment of the society? How can the Church closely collaborate with people of other faiths and those of good will? The article tries to highlight an analysis with regard to the real mission context in the country and offer some theological insights that the Church could put into practice. Under the theological guidance of missio Dei for the Reign of God, the Church of Indonesia is undoubtedly struggling to energize herself to be a community of believers in dialogue with its context, namely the diverse people in the multicultural society in all its dynamic.

Abstract

Inter-faith dialogue in Indonesian context is actually one of the crucial issues for the Church. This new paradigm of doing mission in today’s world has been promoted since the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) onwards for the betterment of living together in this shared-world and for the goodness of humanity. The Catholic Church of Indonesia is called to make interfaith dialogue as the main tone and method of her mission and in so-doing collaborates with people of other faiths for a just and peaceful society. The Church of Indonesia works this missional character out of many ecclesial documents, from the Second Vatican Counsil throughout the Pontificate of Paul VI and John Paul II. The writer tries to offer his analysis with the main intention to support the missional dialogue that the Church has made within the Indonesian multicultural society.

Abstract

The article highlights one of the local wisdoms of the ethnic Sunda, namely Silih Asih, Silih Asah, Silih Asuh (SILAS). Silih Asih is interpreted as loving one another from the depth of one’s heart. Silih Asah means a mutual enhancementfor improving the qualities human life. While Silih Asuh is regarded as a mutual education among members of the community for a harmonious life. With such noble values, the Sundanese have been expected to build up their families accordingly. In so-doing the people could realize a harmonious life in their society. The Sundanese in general, as well as the Catholics in particular, have been so familiar with the Silas values. The writer then argues that the Catholics are highly expected to internalize the values in their marital life and as part of their being Sundanese.

Abstract

In this article, the writers try to ponder more deeply the meaning of unity in a parish congregation, since it has more and more become a place of intercultural encounter. In this way, the writers are also eager to offer some ideas for parish priests, the parish council, and the Christian congregations themselves, particularly in coping with interculturality, where the people of God from diverse backgrounds encounter. What then has to be taken into consideration in building up a so-called prosperous parish community? The writers underline the importance of intercultural competence for members of the community to realize the two main characters of the Church, namely the unity and the catholicity.

Abstract

The Legion of Mary has one mission, which is to proclaim Jesus Christ to the whole world through the Blessed Virgin Mary. A group of the Legion of Mary called ‘Legio Maria Argo Karmel’, headquartered in Malang, has been chosen as the place of this research. In its mission, the Legion has to cope with a lot of problems, particularly with the complex urban culture. The writer found out that the people in this urban area live in a complex world, such as plurality in ethnic backgrounds, cultures, races, as well as religions. It is a great challenge for members of the Argo Karmel Legion of Mary to carry out their mission. They are convinced, however, that they are called and sent to accomplish the mission entrusted to them by the Merciful God. To be more precise, it is their very missionto be witnesses of Christ in the midst of the complex urban city of Malang.

Abstract

Based on the findings of a qualitative research this article examines the pastoral care for the remarried couples in the light ofthe Apostolic Exhortation ofAmoris Laetitia. The research took placein the “Dekenat Malang Kota” (ecclecial district of the city of Malang). It tries to explore the awareness of the remarried couples on their status and the various problems they may have to cope with. It focuses on the pastoral assistance the Church has offered for them. To some extent, the research is also intended to evaluate the practice of pastoral care for the remarried couples in the region. The writer argues that the assistance given to them basically wants to reveal God’s mercy. Therefore, the Church is expected to seriously take into consideration all aspects of pastoral care for the remarried couples as a manifestation of God’s love.
