Abstract

This research focuses on studying the influence of technological advances of communication. Communication through social media networks has formed a platform for new communities which are called virtual communities. The presence of these virtual communities have “shifted” existing communities which were called organic communities or traditional communities or real communities. Researcher argues that in this era, Indonesians cannot avoid a new way of communicating. Convenience in connectedness and long-distance has helped people connect easily and efficiently. Elaboration which is conducted in this research is about the face of the world of communication today. The goal is to find an intrinsic value of communication in any community that emphasizes honesty and truth in the identity of communicators and communicants as well as shared narrative information. The researcher concludes that the model of communication in any community must be oriented to the truth and honesty of identity and narrative information.

Abstract

The article attempts to argue the so-called traditional functions of onan (traditional market) in the Toba People (Batak Toba people) of North Sumatera and confront them with the values of globalization. In addition to economic function, onan also serves as an arena of political activity, law, judiciary, peace, security, a place to express feelings, magic-religious, social gatherings and other socio-cultural activities. However, the authors see that these values have faded away because of the values of globalization that profoundly effected our life today. A wise attitude to face the current globalization is so important that the cultural values that form the identity of a nation are not dominated by the values of globalization that tend to be westernized

Abstract

This article describes a deep relationship between the traditional culture and modern one in the Batak Toba tribe, North Sumatra. The so-called Sipelebegu Religion, which is a traditional religion in the Batak Toba tribe, has undergone a transformation towards modern Christianity. The Sipelebegu Religion was born of a myth. This myth is the embryo of the birth of Sipelebegu religion, until finally the appreciation of the traditional faith of the Batak Toba community turned to the faith of the modern religion that is Christianity

Abstract

'Urip mung mampirngombe', literally means 'life is just a visit to drink'. It is a Javanese saying which is frequently misinterpreted. It seems that everyone grown up in Javanese culure is determined to think pessimistically and behave nihilistically towards life. The writers argue that the old-aged saying as one element of the local wisdom should be interpreted in a right way. Surely, the saying has helped a lot of people to appreciate the worldly life seriously and promote the human culture religiously towards the life to come. Human beings are called towards the eternal life. Therefore, the worldly life is basically a pilgrimage. Such meaningful idea is then developed theologically that the faithful, particularly the Christians as Ecclesia peregrinans (pilgrim Church) (Ad Gentes 2), are called to work out their worldly lives wholeheartedlyfor the eschatological salvation (Lumen Gentium 48). Therefore, the 'mung mampirngombe' life is a serious pilgrimage towards the eternal one (cf. 1Tim 6:12).

Abstract

The writer argues that doing Christology among the Migani people of Papua is underway. Ever since the Catholic missionaries have been among the Miganese and proclaimed Jesus Christ and his Gospel, they were reminded to their ideal figure named Peagabega. Peagabega was an ideal, storico-mythical figure for the Miganese , whose life reflects some similarities to Jesus’ life and preaching, who was so close and identified himself to the powerless and the very least in the society. The Miganese found out that the life story of Peagabega, retold from generation to generation, has helped them much in holding on steadfastly to Jesus Christ, the culmination of the divine revelation and the source of Christian faith. The Catholics of Bilogai Parish in the Diocese of Timika, Papua, always use the figure of Peagabega in celebrating the Good Friday. People are impressed by such inculturated celebration which makes them more rooted in their own religious culture as well as in the Catholic faith.

Abstract

Artikel dengan judul “A New Way of Being Church-in-Mission: The Indonesian Context” ini dikembangkan dari tiga pertanyaan utama: “Bagaimana Gereja memahami negara-bangsa Indonesia sebagai medan hidupnya? Bagaimana Gereja memahami dirinya di antara umat beragama lain? Dan, bagaimana Gereja memaknai hidup misionernya di dalam dan bagi masyarakat Indonesia?” Penulis yakin bahwa menjadi Gereja misioner (Church-in-mission) dalam konteks Indonesia pada intinya membangun komunitas beriman yang interreligius dan interkultural. Tese ini dikembangkan dengan dukungan gagasan-gagasan teologis seperti Gereja sebagai umat ziarah, duta dari Sang pangeran perdamaian, Gereja sebagai pelayan, Gereja dengan peran kenabian, Gereja yang mengembangkan spiritualitas Kristus (Christ-like spirituality).
