Interest from other disciplines (such as history, anthropology, architecture, geology, etc.) must be related to archaeological subject to be covered in this journal. Our first edition was published on March 1980.

Abstract

This article discusses the diaspora and biography of the Dong Son Kettledrums in the Moluccas Archipelago. This research found that the cultural historical setting behind the existence of these objects is related to the diaspora that corresponds with the trade dynamics in the Moluccas archipelago as a source region for the exotic commodities. Shifted from the original context of the production center origin culture di the Mainland Asia to the Insular Southeast Asia, new values had been attached to these bronze kettledrums that related with the local cultural identity aspect.

Abstract

The era of reformation in Indonesia was supposedly articulated with the pluralism of the society. Sadly, many cases regarding religious and ethnic conflicts pronounced the opposite, whereas pluralism and religious tolerance were two of the main characters of the nation since the days of the ancestors. The legacy of those two characters is actually able to be observed through cultural heritage, as a messenger from the past. This study examines one aspect of the practice of religious tolerance, which recorded in the ancient inscriptions from 8th to 11th AD., which selected through purposive sampling procedure. The aforementioned aspect was regarding the important role of ancient vihÄra as a symbol of religious tolerance in society. Such role was the impact of its functions, which are different with today’s modern function. This information on the function and role of the vihÄra in ancient Java is provided to support modern Indonesian society to understand their material cultural heritage.

Abstract

Ancient brick structures were found in 1990 in Semarum site in the regency of Trenggalek. Intensive research have been carried out since 2012 to 2014. Systematic excavation was conducted to disclose the form and character of the site. The Data collection research through excavation activities with qualitative research methods. The result showed that Semarum site is an ancient water reservoir made of brick measuring 24 m x 24 m. Absolute chronology determination is still in the process, while the relative date is estimated between the XI - XIII centuries AD or between Kadiri to Maj¬apahit period.

Abstract

Tradition worship of ancestral spirits in Tengger occur along with the megalithic culture that is widespread in Indonesia, around 500 BC - 500 AD. Physical culture can be seen the remains of objects such as menhirs, and terraces devoted to the concept of ancestral spirit worship followed by a tradition in the community concerned. Megalithic tradition for a group of tribes, is devoted to the worship of ancestral spirits as ruler of protecting and giving life. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to determine the Tengger local wisdom in maintaining natural ecosystems by humans, through a tradition that has lasted for generations can overcome the problem of frequent disasters. Efforts are being made in the search for the data to answer these goals, used the method of approach by conducting interviews and observations of one tradition that held that ceremony mayu desa / ruwatan. The ceremony is conducted once a year, but in year five held over the highway at the expense of a buffalo or cow. From the results of these interviews, the data obtained with regard to the meaning, function and purpose of the ceremony mayu desa / ruwatan, related to disaster mitigation issues.

Abstract

This paper is based on research conducted by Yogyakarta Archaeological Center in 2013 with the theme of the Japanese Defense Facilities In The World War II in Lumajang and Jember. The research is an effort to disclose the typology of Japanese defense facilities well as their coverage in both locations. At both locations have been identified 43 objects from the era of Japanese occupation, consisted of bunker (40 objects), cave (2 objects), and water tank (1 object). Among them, 38 objects commanded the sea traffic, 4 objects commanded land routes, and 1 object is unknown.

Abstract

This study uses data codex to see the process of Islamization in the former Kingdom of Hitu . This study aimed to identify the forms of Islamization and the development of Islamic teachings and sects. Research methods with quantitative and qualitative approaches codex of data based identification and classification of the type and content of the manuscript. Methods of emphasizes quantitative comparison of the quantity and percentage of types of texts, while the qualitative approach to identify the contents of the script to see the development of the Islamic streams in the region. The results showed that the shape and model of Islamization propaganda approach and Sufism is the most dominant in addition to education and literacy teaching the Koran and Islamic law (fiqh). Additionally Islamization in the region of the Kingdom Hitu also growing recognition institutes, as well as the influence of the Shia tradition. Thus , the process of Islamization from the Quran literacy education, the introduction of Islamic Sufism and the congregation as well as the development of Islamic schools into the factors of growth and development of Islam in the region since the Kingdom Hitu in 16th-19th century AD.
