Abstract

This research explores the intricate interplay of humour, psycholinguistics, morphology, themes, rheme, and language intelligence within the Indonesian language context. Through thorough analysis, the study breaks down humorous linguistic constructs, emphasizing the significance of abrupt contextual shifts and linguistic disruptions as the essence of Indonesian humour. By examining themes and rheme, the research reveals how humour arises from unexpected linguistic contrasts, challenging reader expectations. From a psycholinguistic perspective, the study dissects the cognitive processes that underlie humour comprehension, shedding light on the crucial role of language intelligence in recognizing and appreciating linguistic nuances. The research methodology involved extensive text analysis, delving into various linguistic elements and their impact on humour. The study concludes that language structure, psycholinguistics, and the manipulation of themes and rheme are fundamental aspects of Indonesian humour, underscoring the linguistic complexity inherent in comedic expression.

Abstract

Academic writing is a social practice that involves scholarly exchanges to distribute knowledge and negotiate interpretations. While disseminating knowledge, the writers present themselves and build interactions with the readers through their ways of using language. This study drew upon Hyland’s (2005) Interpersonal Metadiscourse Model to explore the interactional voice in English essays written by non-native students. It looked closely at the interpersonal system of stance in their essays that included hedges, boosters, attitude markers, and self-mention. The data were taken from six English essays written by six Indonesian university students. The findings showed that the self-mention marker was used most frequently in all essays, with an overall percentage of more than 50%. This type of marker was used mainly to exhibit their position in the discussion and to establish interpersonal interaction with the readers. The educational implication was specifically intended for academic writing lecturers to include metadiscourse in classroom instruction for the students to become effective writers.

Abstract

This research aims to determine the level of translation accuracy of students with intermediate-level Mandarin language proficiency, understand the tendency of using different types of dictionaries and their influence on students' translation results, and identify appropriate strategies to enhance the quality of students' translation, especially in terms of translation accuracy. Data collection was conducted through observation techniques, literature review, interviews, and questionnaires. The study focused on the translation of 介词 jiècí (prepositions) and 连词 liáncí (conjunctions) found in second-semester Mandarin language students with HSK 2 equivalent proficiency. The research results still show inaccuracies in translations done by students. Inaccuracies are often found, especially in the translation of 连词 liáncí (conjunctions). This is due to students' lack of understanding of the message context in 介词 jiècí (prepositions) and 连词 liáncí (conjunctions) found in the text. Additionally, the tendency to use Google Translate in translating texts during the learning process is a significant factor contributing to translation inaccuracies. The use of electronic Mandarin-Indonesian language dictionaries is also one of the factors leading to errors in word selection that result in translation inaccuracies.

Abstract

This study examines consecutive interpreting strategies in the subject of a video bilateral meeting between Jokowi and Obama. This study examined a bilateral meeting in English and consecutively interpreted it in Indonesian. This study applied the consecutive interpreting strategy theory from (Faerch, & Kasper, 1983).  The descriptive qualitative method was used as the method of this study. Data were collected from videos taken from the website YouTube. After that, the video was transcribed conservatively. The result showed that two types of consecutive interpreting strategies were used. There are reduction and achievement strategies. From the reduction strategy, the interpreter used the skipping, incomplete sentence, and filtering techniques. Meanwhile, in the achievement strategy, the interpreter applied an elaborate technique. The message abandonment and assistance techniques were not found in this study. The result also showed that the interpreter regularly reduces and elaborates the lexical meaning of the word or phrase in the utterances. The interpreter elaborated on his understanding and added extra information in a way to make the sentences easy to understand by the audience.

Abstract

This study investigates the use of grammatical cohesion in the argumentative essays written by Indonesian English as a Foreign Language students. Cohesion, a crucial component of textual coherence, ensures that discourse elements are logically connected, thereby enhancing the readability and comprehensibility of written texts. By analyzing a corpus of 7 students’ essays, this research identifies the frequency and types of cohesive devices employed while at the same time observing the coherence built through the use of these devices using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) cohesion conceptual framework. The findings demonstrate prevalent patterns where the reference devices were used more frequently than conjunctive devices. It suggests that the lack of understanding of grammatical cohesion can lead to potential challenges for learners in utilizing cohesive mechanisms effectively.
