Abstract

It is undebatable that people learn English in order to be able to use this language in communication, hence, speaking is considered as the most significant indicator of language learning successfulness. Issues in the process of acquiring this skill were solved by big number of previous studies through the employment of game. This research was aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Pictionary game in promoting students’ speaking proficiency. A quantitative of pre-experimental research was applied with one group pre-test and post-test research design. One class of grade 8 students of SMPT Darussalam Reni Jaya Depok participated in this study as the sample. Data were collected through speaking pre-test and post-test. These data were analyzed statistically by using paired-sample t-test. The findings revealed that students achieved better speaking performance in the post-test or after learning by using Pictionary game. Besides, in the significance level of 5% (α = 0.05), t-count of 3.816 was higher than t-table of 1.684. Thus, this research concluded that Pictionary game contributed to the improvement of students’ speaking outcome. In other words, Pictionary game was proven to be effective, used in promoting students’ speaking proficiency.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe and analyze the representation of racism in the film "The Help." The research method used were descriptive qualitative and content analysis to identify how the concepts of racism, stereotypes, and power displayed in the film's narrative. The theory used in this study was the "Theory of Prejudice" proposed by Gordon Allport, which helps in understanding how negative perceptions of certain groups can develop into discriminatory attitudes and actions. The results of this study provide deep insight into how racism was presented in entertainment media and its impact on social consciousness. It was found 12 acts of discrimination that has been divided into 4 four types such as verbal antagonism, avoidance, segregation, and physical attack.

Abstract

The research aimed to discover the students’ perceptions at SMP N 1 Jebus in responding the implementation of group work and its implementation in English learning. This research used descriptive qualitative research using data collection techniques that was technical triangulation including observation, interviews and documentation to obtain the data directly. This research used data analysis technique by Miles and Huberman in which data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The samples of this research were 16 students of class 9 C which is classified by six active students, five average students, and five passive students. The research result showed that learning English with group work used discussion and presentations. The results of the interview showed from cognitive aspects, group work helped them to worked collaboratively, finished tasks quickly, gaining respect; from affective aspects, it made learning fun, gathered with their friends; and from conative aspects, students could shared ideas, have roles and divide the task to the members. Others had negative perceptions of group work in English class, such as unfair task participations, not being serious in finishing assignments, and afraid their opinions were not heard. Students emphasized that the productivity of group work was influenced by their group members. It can be concluded that most of the students have positive perception of group work activities in Learning English.

Abstract

This study was a correlational study. The objectives of this study were: to find out the students’ achievement in using adjective, their ability in writing descriptive text, and whether there was any significant correlation between those two variables. The total number of sample was 24 students. The findings of this study showed that the students’ achievement in using adjective was categorized into good criteria. It could be seen from the result of the mean score of students’ achievement in using adjective, it was 76.96. For the students’ ability in writing descriptive text, the findings of the study showed that the result of the mean score was 76.75. Then, the findings for the correlation between students’ achievement in using adjective and students’ ability in writing descriptive text was 0.860 and the p-value (Sig. (2- tailed)) was 0.000. Meanwhile, the critical value in the table at significant (2- tailed) level 5% was 0.404. It meant that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. Therefore, there was a positive correlation between students’ achievement in using adjective and students’ ability in writing descriptive text.

Abstract

The research was aimed to know about the effect of greeting card media on students’ ability in writing of eighth grade at junior high school in Bangka Belitung. This experimental study employed quasi experimental design. The samples used was the 8th grade students of high school many as 54 students. The research used a writing test as a data collection technique. In the technique of analyzing the data, the research used t-test was in the form of paired sample t-test to test the hypothesis through the SPSS. The finding showed an improvement in students' writing when they used greeting card media. The result of t-obtained 5.712 was greater than the t-table 2.007. The result of 2-tailed significance 0,00 have less score than 0,05. Thus, it menas that the experimental group had a greater performance than the control group.
