Abstract

English is one of the compulsory subjects at schools in Indonesia, including at junior high schools. This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of implementing an interactive approach in teaching reading comprehension. It also investigated the students' responses toward the implementation of an interactive approach in teaching reading. The true-experimental design was carried out in this study along with the pretest and post-test. Two classes of the first-grade students of SMPIK Nurul Quran in Aceh Besar were chosen as the sample of the research with total population sampling technique. This sampling technique was employed because of the limited individuals to be randomized as samples. Each group consisted of 20 students for the experimental class and 20 students for the control class. The instruments used in this study were test and questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS Version 20. The results show that the use of an interactive approach improved students’ reading scores and they also gave positive responses toward the use of interactive approach in teaching reading. Therefore, the alternate hypotheses of this research was accepted. It means that the implementation of interactive approach could increase students’ reading scores significantly as compared with the students who were taught by using the bottom-up approach. The students also had positive responses to the implementation of interactive approach during teaching and learning reading comprehension. It can be concluded that interactive approach is one of the effective approach for teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

Due to the complexity of writing skill, EFL students, especially in Aceh, face a lot of problems in composing a text such as a recount text resulting in abundant errors of both interlingual and intralingual interferences. Considering this, this study aims at identifying the types of interlingual and intralingual errors committed by the students in writing recount text. Based on the results found in the written samples collected from 60 students, it was found that from 16 sorts of error categories, the students committed 1143 occurrences of errors. The types of interlingual errors collected were in reference to orthographic errors, lexical errors, and grammatical errors, while the type of intralingual errors was overgeneralization, ignorance of rule restriction, incomplete application of rules, and false concepts hypothesis. All of these were caused by the lack of vocabulary and having no idea of the right words for their ideas, and hence, they just directly translated their story literally from bahasa to English. Therefore, both teachers and students should be aware of this condition. Moreover, the creativity of the teachers in enhancing students’ vocabulary and using it in context is truly required. Hence, these problems can be resolved in the best way.

Abstract

This research investigated the students’ responses to listening difficulties in taking the listening section of the TOEFL test and their efforts made to overcome the difficulties. This study is descriptive qualitative research that used the online questionnaire attached in the google forms to gather data needed. The questionnaire was distributed to 100 medical students at UP3BI class (Unit Pengembangan Program Pendamping Mata Kuliah Bahasa Inggris (UP3BI) of Syiah Kuala Language Center. The questionnaire was divided into two. Part one consisted of students’ personal information on the listening skill questionnaire.  It was found that watching English TV programs or movies (65.10%) and listening to English songs (60%) as the highest rank of students’ efforts made to overcome listening difficulties of the TOEFL test. Section two of the questionnaire consisted of listening difficulties. It was found that most respondents were difficult to understand the native speaker’s pronunciation (64%). In addition, it is suggested that for English lecturers, other researchers, institutions, and testing organizers to contribute a standardized knowledge of the TOEFL test and also to provide a conditioned testing place for a better improvement of listening TOEFL in particular. Besides, the test takers or students should practice and learn more about listening TOEFL as often as possible. Therefore, they will get used to listening and can minimize the difficulties during taking the TOEFL test.

Abstract

This study discusses the emerged language teaching methodologies practiced in Engineering Fields. There are many methods applied in teaching language. However, the needs of technical fields in English learning, especially for workforce, academic and social demand, seemed to have appropriate treatment. Career choice has given a great impact influencing the study of English language. In addition, there are specific needs in the engineering workplace that are inevitably used by engineers to correspond with their colleagues or customers. This situation leads to some thought in English for specific purpose practices. Recently, there are two teaching methodologies adjusted for the needs of technical school students that are being studied. First, Corpus linguistics: the lexical approach has been mostly practiced before. Innovated by data-driven corpus, this methodology arises as to the new common method applied in the engineering area. Second, Dialogic Pedagogy: the thought of dialogism is grounded by the sociocultural theory that considers learning as a social act. Social engagement is believed in improving one’s ability to be a decider and problem solver. Through dialogic pedagogies, students learn to eliminate some problems related to language barriers, such as the anxiety to speak English and apprehensiveness in making mistakes.

Abstract

This research dissects the shift of Javanese into Acehnese in Pulo Loih village, Pidie. The Javanese live in the Pulo Loih village they followed the transmigration program which was not extended by the government and then moved to Pulo Loih village. This community is the focus of the researchers to conduct research that includes factors shifting Javanese into Acehnese and patterns of language shifting. Qualitative descriptive is a method applied in this study to collect data from 12 participants (eight adults and four children). After analyzing it, it was revealed that Javanese language users have disappeared among children while parents still interact with Javanese. There two factors that the researchers found in this study, namely internal factors and external factors. As for internal factors, parents do not teach Javanese and never interact in Javanese with their children. External factors include safety factors, economic factors, and social factors. These factors have proven that the Javanese language shift into the Acehnese language happened in Pulo Loih village, Pidie. There were four patterns of language shift when interacting, namely monolingual, subordinate bilingual, equal bilingual, and monolingual interaction patterns. Three patterns of language shift occurred in Javanese parents in the first generation who arrived in Pulo Loih village. The pattern is monolingual, subordinate bilingual, and equal bilingual. In the third generation, Javanese children, they have lost the fourth patterns, and the patterns of language shift directly to the fifth language shift pattern is monolingual.

Abstract

This experimental study aimed to investigate the effects of the use of KWL (Know-Want to Know-Learned) strategy in teaching reading comprehension. The population of this study was 120 students, while the samples consisted of 60 English department students enrolled in the second semester. The sample was divided into two groups; the experimental group (EG) and the control group (CG). The sample was chosen through random sampling technique. The instruments used in collecting the data were test and questionnaire. The data were analyzed through non-parametric statistical in SPSS 20. The result of Wilcoxon test was 0.00 lower than 5%. The findings reveal that there was significant difference in reading comprehension achievement between EG and CG. The mean score of the post-test for the EG was 9.92, while the mean score for post-test of CG was 7.91. Hence, it can be concluded that the alternative hypothesis was accepted and the null hypothesis was rejected. Consequently, the use of KWL strategy has proven a significance improvement in the students’ reading comprehension. Some implications are derived for both students and teachers.
