Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out whether there would be any significant improvement in the ability of students taught to write in English using the Mind Mapping Technique (MMT) by comparison with students taught using another technique. It is further to investigate the effect of teaching writing to the first grade students at a high school in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, using MMT. This research was an experimental study, two classes were taken as the sample, a control group (CG) and an experimental group (EG), each with 32 students. The quantitative data was obtained from the results from the pre-tests and the post-tests of writing done by the students. The result of the quantitative data analysis can be seen from the result from the post-tests for each group where the mean of the post-test scores from the EG was 81, while that from the CG was 70. By comparing the t-test score and t-table score, the result of the t-test was 6.38, while the result of the t-table at a level of significance with α=0.05 was 1.68. Thus, the t-test score was higher than the t-table score. Hence, it can be concluded that the students who were taught using the MMT performed better at writing tasks than those who were taught by another technique. The analysis of the writing done by the students to investigate the effects of the MMT also showed that the students in the EG improved in every aspect (content, vocabulary, grammar, organization and mechanics) of writing since they were taught using MMT. After being taught using the MMT they could develop their ideas into good paragraphs and compose a well-written piece of writing.

Abstract

Teaching internship programs are designed to smooth the transition from student to teacher. At the same time the teaching internship assignment gives the teacher training institutions an opportunity to evaluate the teaching capabilities of their soon-to-graduate students. It  is one of the most important components of the teacher training program; an opportunity for student teachers to put their theoretical studies into practice. The objective of this study was to investigate the constraints faced by student teachers during their teaching internship programs. A qualitative method was employed in this study, which involved 26 students from the 2016/2017 teaching internship program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, University of Syiah Kuala. A convenient random sampling technique was used to select the sample and a questionnaire was used as the instrument to collect the data which was analyzed using the Miles and Huberman method. Based on the results there were fourteen constraints faced by the student teachers during their teaching internship programs. The constraints were mainly in the domains of personal matters, class participation, class management, instructional methods, emotional issues, adjusting to students and quality of supervision. As teaching practice is an important component of a teacher training program, considerable attention must be given to make it highly effective and fruitful. Therefore, this study suggests that more co-operation from the faculty and the schools is needed in terms of supervision to improve and optimize the outcomes from this program.

Abstract

This research is aimed at investigating word expressions of agreement and disagreement during group discussion activities in speaking class at English Education Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat. The word expressions were classified based on classification proposed by Rizvi (2005, p. 185). The classifications were strong and neutral (agreements and disagreements). The researcher used purposive sampling to answer the research questions. The researcher chose the students who expressed word expressions of agreement and disagreement in stating the opinion. In collecting the data the researcher did observation for each class by using observation checklist, field note and video recorder as instruments. The data were collected by the researcher and classified into the classifications. There were thirty five (35) students of English Education Department of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat who used word expressions of agreements and disagreements in stating their opinion in group discussion activities in speaking class. Thus, the two classifications of agreements and disagreements were variously  found in the students’ expressions.

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out how Performance Assessments were implemented in English speaking classes and what difficulties were faced by the teachers in doing them. The sample for this research was all the English teachers at SMAN 3 Banda Aceh. The research design for this study included observations of actions in the classroom during the learning process and also interviews with the teachers outside of the classroom. The instruments used to collect data were an interview guide and the observation sheets. The researcher interviewed the teachers about their perceptions towards the implementation of Performance Assessments and what difficulties they faced in doing them. Observations were made in the four English classes of the tenth and eleventh grades and one interview meeting was held with each teacher. In addition, the researcher recorded and took pictures of the teaching-learning processes in the classroom, and also collected the lesson plans to get more detailed information about the learning materials and assessments. Based on the research results, all of the English teachers at SMAN 3 Banda Aceh, as the sample for the study, were not familiar with the term Performance Assessments, but they recognized the characteristics of Project Assessment or Practical Assessment which they already applied occasionally. They also recognized that Performance Assessments could provide them with a more enthusiastic atmosphere for learning. Even so, such assessments were not favoured by the teachers due to their complexity and the many aspects of scoring required for one form of learning.

Abstract

This study is conducted to investigate the students’ use of Facebook (FB) in teaching English writing recount text. The research method employed was an exploratory case study. The number of participants involved in this study was 15 students purposively taken from IPS (Study in Social Sciences/Ilmu Pengetahuan Sosial) class, Al-Manar Islamic Boarding School. To explore their experiences on using FB in writing a recount text, Yunus and Salehi’s (2012) Facebook questionnaire and interview were adopted. The findings elucidated that the majority of respondents believed that FB group helped them in the writing process, especially in using correct vocabulary, brainstorming and the necessity to write in Standard English and Grammar. Their affective domain was influenced through engaging in peers’ feedback via FB group comment and like features. One of the formidable challenges is to write legibly in English formal language and grammar. Thus, teachers are advised to give their maximum attention on teaching writing recount text via FB group with specific instructions.
