Abstract

This research was designed to figure out the effectiveness of the think aloud strategy in improving students’ reading comprehension ability. The think aloud strategy is a learning strategy whereby students verbalize their thought as they read. Twenty 2nd grade students of MAS Darul Ulum Banda Aceh participated in this quantitative research. This research used a pre-experimental design with one-group pretest-posttest. The finding showed that the think aloud strategy improves students’ reading comprehension ability, especially in analytical exposition text. It can be seen from the mean score of the post-test (54.4) which was higher than that of the pre-test (36.4). The t-test analysis showed that the t-score (4.255) obtained a higher gain than the t-table (2.085). This strategy successfully helped the students to increase their reading comprehension ability in all aspects, particularly in identifying main ideas, making inferences, summarizing, and interpreting vocabulary. Therefore, the think aloud strategy can be considered as an effective instructional tool for teaching reading skill.

Abstract

This study examines online collaborative writing (CW) teaching techniques via asynchronous computer-mediated communication multimodality, i.e., Google Docs. This study attempts to investigate what Indonesian learners perceive concerning writing collaboratively in Google Docs during online learning. This study collected data from 20 Primary School Teacher Education (PSTE) students enrolling in an English 3 (Academic Writing) class at a private university in Indonesia. The findings showed that the participants perceived online collaborative writing as a good way to develop their writing and communication skills. It was found that feedback from peers and the teacher was considered beneficial to the learners’ writing development during the implementation of online collaborative writing (OCW). Even though interaction among learners can be enhanced in OCW, learners’ lack of participation was one of the drawbacks discovered in this study. It is hoped that this study can contribute significantly to English writing instructors considering the benefits and the drawbacks of OCW before implementing OCW in their university classrooms.

A total of 60 students involved in the study and they were divided equally for both the experimental and control groups. The data were collected from the pre-test, the treatment, the post-test, and questionnaire. The speaking test was given to both groups and the test scores were assessed by two examiners. The data were analyzed and interpreted using the SPSS 17.0 software program. The results reveal that the text types of Discussion Gamescan improve students’ performance in speaking and the application of Discussion Games increase students’ performance in learning speaking. The result of the students’ speaking score from the pre-test to the post test demonstrates a significant difference with Sig. (2 tailed) is lower than 0.05. Furthermore, the comparison of the students’ speaking improvement between the experimental and control groups is 0.000. It means that the improvement is recognized to be of significance and Discussion Games can increase students’ performance in speaking. The findings suggest that the experimental class responded positively to Discussion Games and confirmed that the strategy help them improve their speaking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the speech acts based on Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts in the teen novel, ‘Dilan, Dia adalah Dilanku Tahun 1990’. This research aims to identify and describe these acts as done by one of the main characters, Dilan. This research used a qualitative method. The data were in the form of a description where all of Dilan’s utterances are identified in the novel and further analyzed. The findings of this research showed that there are five types of illocutionary acts in the novel. They are assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declarative. The assertive type is the dominant type used by Dilan rather than the other types. In terms of the perlocutionary act, the effect of Dilan’s utterances tends to persuade his hearers, impress, encourage, convince, amuse, intimidate, inform and surprise them. As a consequence, persuading the hearers is the dominant effect based on Dilan’s utterances. The context of situation determined all the acts performed by this main character. Conclusively, the findings of this study are expected to broaden the context of linguistics, especially of speech acts as a part of pragmatics in linguistics.
