Abstract

The political condition in Indonesia is poor at prescnt. This condition is caused by a lot of factors. The nlaill factor causing it is the existing poitical structure, which is clot functional. Another factor is the inappropriate practice of political education for society iin general and students inparticular. This present inappropriate political education iisfocussed on how to obtain power and how to guarantee nationalstability, so Ihat it does not reach the most fundamentaldimension of human life, namely, human rights. Therefore, it isabout time that the orientation of political education beextended. The political education should not be simply oriented ropolitical socialization of human rights. The reasons are that, firstly, political rights are just a small part of human rigl~ls,secondly, human rights are a dominant issue in the globali7ationera, and, thirdly, political education is essentially opening theconsciousness that the political field is not a means of actualizingpower values but rather a means of actualizing the noble valuesof humanism. One part of society to be the target of political educatio~~is college students, to whom the political education oriented tohuman rights can be performed through formal or nonformaleducation. In the college, political education is curricularlyintegrated in the general subject classes. In the course of theconversion of IKIP into a university, the MKU (short for MataKuliah Umum, meaning general subject classes) can be thestepping stones to initiate the implementation of politicalcducation oriented to human rights. There should be ways tointegrate the values of human rights into the general subjectclasses as a whole in order that these classes can equip studentsin becoming more mature and responsible in playing a part inthe political field so that it will finally help to bring the politicalcondition in Indonesia to becoming one more human.

Abstract

Learning conditions in the school setting all this ti~tlch asbeen considered insufficient in supporting children's creativity. This unfavorable learning system is not conlplelcly theteacher's fault, or that of those who are directly or indirectlyinvolved in implementing children's, education at schools. Thercare many in[eirelaled variables and it is difficult to inlcrvcncamong them so that they result in undcsirable nlodels orpatterns.Efforts to foster children's creativity can be donc byteachers at schools by developing intrincic creativily motivationin the teaching-learning process by changing convcnl~onal intocreative patterns, through enforccmcnt and obycctivedimensions, and thorugh reduction and actualization. Aspectsnecessary to foster, anlong others, are appreciating, dcdicating,Icarning-playing, and self-focusing.

Abstract

Vocabulary teaching is one of the important aspects oflanguage teaching. Actually, vocabulary teaching is one of theoldest areas of interest in educational research. But, it is notgaining much attention. There are two conlmon types of vocabulary teachingmethods, namely, direct and indirect ones. Direct nlethods coverall methods directly presenting vocabulary as instructionalmaterial, such as, defi~~itionanl d contcxlual methods, whercasindirect methods cover various language activities supportingvocabulary teaching, including reading, listening, speaking, andwriting. With various research results as basis, it can beconcluded that there is no one single method which is the best.Every method has its special characteristics. The teacher shoulduse various methods in teaching vocabulary, while, on the otherhand, extensive reading is one of the resources for vocabularydevelopment.

Abstract

The Indonesian people are now in a period of uncertainchange due to the severity of the crisis facing them. 'The crisishas touched the wheels of the eco~lomics, legal, and politicalsystems and is very likely to touch also other aspects such as thesocio- cultural and moral aspccts of living in a socicty, countryand nation. The society is changing from a dual systcni, in whichthe political system (as a structure) and the social system (as thesuperstructure) are separated fronl each other, towards a 11cwsystem, the so-called ciivil society, whiich is actually still one stepbefore Ihe elhical society. Uurilig the present period orstructural change, the quality of the hunlan resources must beprepared, since they are the main components in the culturalchange towards the intended civil society. If the proporlio~l ofeducated citizens is still too small, it may be very difficult for thecivil society to come into reality and even niore so Tor the ethicalsociety. 'Thercfore, there necds to be rcorientatioli in thedirection and basic policy of the national education to supportthe effort of the nation towards a civil society. The eduqtionalreorentation involves two aspects. Firstly, the characteristics orthe quality of the educated people suitable for the civils societyneed to be clarified and, secondly, at the macro-level there arereal needs for a more democratic educational system, withhctter access to educational opportunities, equality in quality, efficiency, productivity, and employability.

Abstract

Failures in the teaching of Javanese short story writingare in general induced by the mistake of adopting the approachthat is oriented more to the product rather than to the process.Consequently, pupils are reluctant to go through a creativeprocess and frequently lured to take short cuts by both imitatingand plagiarizing somebody else's work. The aforen~entioned reality could be prevented byapplying a creative process approach in producing Javaneseshort stories. This approach illvolves four stages, i.e., (1) thepreparation stage, namcly, that of raising an idea derived fromone's life experiences and from increases reading, (2) theincubation stage, nainely, that of the maturation of an idea, hypracticing contemplation of experiences and observatio~~s(3, )the illuinination stage, namely, that of expressing the idea, and(4) the verification stage, namely, that or stimulating andmotivating pupils' activities through comparison of their ownworks and those of their collectives. The steps to be taken by the teacher in applying theprocess approach are, (1) retelling high-quality Javanese shsortstories, (2) retelling thcm from different poi~its of view, (3)reteling them from incomplete original by adding imaginedparts, (4) stimulating pupils' creativily by offering a variety oft hen~es.
