Abstract

Simple understanding puts art in a corner in Islamic belief though Islamic teaching provides art with a full position. This shows in Amri's works in art. ;\. study hasbeen based on an intensive literature research which has been strengthened by the writer's strong interest in Islamic art. A good relationship with Prof. Dr. (H.C.) Amri Yahyahas to some extent provided the writer with an ability to conduct an in-depth interview with the artist. This article tries to present an early remark concerning the peculiarity ofeach community in understanding and promoting its own art. In dealing with monumental works ofart, one needs more than one single yardstick for evaluating and measuring them. The situation becomes more complicated ifthere are religious aspects on them. Nevertheless, this article tries to highlight monumental works ofart, especially Amri's, with the writer admitting many possible short-comings in it and its possibility ofprovoking others to present their own views and, therefore, inviting them to write about those views as best as they could so that all may come to the best conclusions or agreements so badly needed. Key words: Amri, Art, Islam, evaluation, and understanding.

Abstract

A number ofphysical activities are classified as sports. Sport exercises give somebenefits to the people actively and physically involved. RegullIT exercise in such act.\yities as walking, jogging, swimming, and playing games like'temUs, football, and badmintonis associated withbetterphysical and mental fitness. Sport exercises get people ready to avoid manymajordiseases and to live healthier, less stressful, and more productive lives than those led bypeople who live sedentary lives. Whenhealth is somehow absent, all the technological advances are useless. Thus there is a direct link between participation inregularphysical activity and good health. Sport exercises prepare people for lifelong health. It is indeed true that such exercises can very much help those with physical and mental problems. Such exercises are good for the body and the brain because the motion ofthe body influences the mind. Physical fitness is not only one ofthe most important keys to a healthy bodybut also the basis ofdynamic and creative intellectual activity. Intelligence and skill could only function at the peak of their capacity when the body is strong. Hardy spirits and tough mindsusually inhabit soundbodies. Sport exercises mayalso enhance neurotransmitter activity in the brain and increase oxygen transport to the brain: By means ofsport exercises people gain opportlmities to develop all their intelligence, whether it is bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, interpersonal, intrapersonal, musical, linguistic, logicalmathematical, of nati.rraJ.istic. . .' - One ofthe amazing fuets to come out ofall the recent research is that the same amount ofexercise helps both the physical selfand the brain. Inessence, this article merely points out what we have already strongly suspected people have experienced: sport exercises are good for both the body and the brain. Through regular, active use ofthe body, one can discover a greater sense ofwell-being, far greater vi tality, and a calmer, more relaxed attitude toward daily pressures. Keywords: sport exercises, brain

Abstract

An educational system should be able to develop students' ability to learn. Students who have good learning habits and ability could begiven the J:eSPonsibilit¥ and ability ofregulating their own learning activities. Itmeans that it would be the students themselves who would execute the processes of exploration, inquiry, and learning and also conceptualize their activities. Students' learning activities would not work ifthe teacher's conceptofinstruction still uses the approach ofthe "content delivery system", which means that the teacher continually gives with the students merely taking and accepting. This kind ofinstructional approach principally would produce passive and dependent students, who always wait to be spoon-fed bythe teacher. Such an attitude passivity anddependence in students would affect them by decreasing their enthusiasm for active learning, which, in tum, would yield a low academic perfonnance, preventing them from getting a passing grade, make them fail, and possibly even cause them to drop out. On the face ofsuch a problem, there has come the concept ofself-regulated learning, a concept that tries to explain how students canberegula tors oftheirownlearning activities.Self-regulated learning is the kind oflearning that occurs because of the influence of students' self-generated thoughts, feelings, strategies, and behaviors which are oriented toward the attainment oflearning goals. Here it is important that students' initiative starts their learning activity. Active, dynarnic, and creative students usually have much initiative to doing some activities. Once they know the direction to the objectives, they would generate thoughts, feelings, strategies, and behaviors oriented toward the attainment ofgoals. So the basic components of self-regulated learning are self-regula tion ofcognition, self-regulation ofmotivation and emotion, and self-regulation ofbehavior. Teachers can help students become more self-regulated. Some ways to teach self-regulated learning are explicit instruction, direct reflection, and meta-cognitive discussion. Two modeh{that could be followed are those called Cycle ofSelf-Regulated Learning, and ACyclical Model ofSelf regulated Learning from Zimmerman. Both models, however, are alike principally. They start with planning, implementation, and e valuation ofthe chosen strategies. Results ofthe researches have proven that self-regulated learning correlates significantly with academic performance in primary, middle, and high school students. Keywords: promoting academic performance, self-regulated learning.

Abstract

A studying the fonn of action research has been conducted to determine the possibility ofemploying a situational interactive approach in the teaching-learning process of deaf children to increase their oral language skill. The study also aimed to explore the teaching-learning procedure to use to improve their oral language skill. With students of a state special school for the deaf in Yogyakarta as the population, the study was conducted in an oral language skill class ofthirty-two deafchildren in two cycles consisting offourc1ass sessions through the steps ofreconnaissance, planning, implementation combined with observation, and re flection. Modifications of the teaching-learning process were conducted as treatment by the classroom teachers in collaboration with the researcher. The data were collected by administering achievement tests and analyzed with qualitative and quantitative methods. The results indicate that (1) the actions implemented improved the students' oral language skill, (2) the model of situational interactive approach used was more effective in increasing their orallaIiguage skill than the regular one, and (3) it is feasible to use this model to teach deafchildren. Key words: deafchildren, interactive situational approach.

Abstract

The contextual scienceleaming strategy can be carried out to the optimum ifsupported by teachers' creativity and capability to make use ofthe potentials ofthe students, their school, and its environment The problem is whether teachers ofstudents leamiD.g science already have the capability to develop and implement a contextual learning strategy in their students. This article is written for the purpos~of increasing those teachers' knowledge and understanding ofthe afore said learning strategy in order that they can develop and to implement it in their science classes. Being contextual, it is a strategy relating instructional content withreal situations ofthe learners and encourag ing themto relate academic knowledge to its application in their lives as individuals and family or community members. Contextual learning has the following characteristics: I) emphasizing problem solving, 2) recognizing that teaching and learning need to occur in multiple context, 3) assisting students in learning how to monitor their leaming sd thattheybecomeseJf,.regu1ated leamers, 4) anchoring teach inginthe diverse life context ofstudents, 5) encouraging students to learn from each other, and 6) employing authentic assessment. Abstract

Mentally retarded children are children whose potentials are more limited than those of the average normal child. These limited potentials need to be developed in order that they can live self-dependentry. The self-dependence can be achieved if they possess life skills. Successful learning of those skills in the mentally retarded can be achieved through the use of, among others, an integrated learning management approach. The approach implies a process of planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling their learning in order that they achieve capability in acquiring some life skills, with the capability to be acquired according to their condition because of their limited potentials. Andthe process integrated with various fields ofstudy and knowledge in solving problems in routine daily life. Such problems require an integrated application of various fields of study and knowledge and the application of the integrated learning management for the mentally retarded can be considered an effort to increase their manpower learning oflife skills can become an indicator that achieving life skills is useful for the life ofthe mentally retarded. Key words: life skills ofthe mentally retarded, integrated learning management.
