Abstract

AbstractThis article describes the role of kinesthesis in motor learning. It starts with a definition that kinesthesis is generally regarded asa feeling or awareness of body position and body movement. But there are four factors seemingly quite common in definitions of kinesthesis: positioning of body segments, precision of movement, balance, and spatial orientation. Any appropriate reference explaining the reception and tramsmission of kinesthetic information during movement has not yet been determined to the satisfaction of all those working in this area. Traditionally, it has been assumed that the proprioceptor in the muscles represents the source of kinesthesis. The possibility of improving the capability of the kinesthetic organ of sense has been a subject of considerableinterest in discussions among instructors of physical education. But there is, as yet, no convincing evidence that kinesthesis can be improved. It is generally stated, though, that the more one practices in repeating a certain movement, the more skillful one becomes in making that movement. One can feel, however, that feeling and balance, as main elements of kinesthesis, can be improved through increased practice frequency and or creation of a conducive condition.Key words: kinesthesis, positioning of body segments, precision of movement, balance, and spatial orientation

Abstract

AbstractThis article is based on a research conducted to reveal the model, characteristic, and method of the teaching of newly-created dances at Padepokan Seni Bagong Kussudiardja (or PSBK, for short).Employing a naturalistic approach, the research focussed on the teaching of newly-created dances and especially the teaching model used. The data were obtained through observations, interviews, and documentation conducted on the management, teachers, students, and administration staff at PSBK. The instruments for data collection were observation guides, interview guides, and documents. The collection of data involved the use of a tape recorder, writing implements, notebooks, cassette tapes, and a camera for taking photographs. A purposive sample of 14 informants was obtained, consisting of 1 member of the management, 2 members of the administration staff, 7 of the teachers, and 4 of the students. The data obtained were analyzed by means of a descriptive-qualitative method while data validation was done through a triangulation technique. The research result indicates that the teaching of newly-created dances at PSBK is carried out by using a specific system called padepokanand a specific model called pencantrikan. The padepokan system integrates into one the educational system of pesantren (traditional Islamic educational institution in Indonesia), Javanese culture, and the santiniketan model from India. The pencantrikan model integrates into one the characteristics of the social interaction, personal, informationprocessing, and behaviorist models of teaching. The ideas of the specific system and model of teaching are all derived from Javanese cultural concepts identifiable through such terms as padepokan, cantrik, mentrik, wirapertiwi, bhayangkari, gadjah mada, kuda-kuda, yapong, layang-layang, and diponegoro.Key words: teaching newly-created dances, padepokan, cantrik, teachingmodel

Abstract

AbstractQuality is at the top of most agenda and improving quality isprobably the most important task facing any situation. Of course, we all know quality when we experience it, but describing and explaining it is a more difficult task. In our everyday life, we usully take quality for granted, especially when it is regularly provided. The best organizations, whether public or private, understanding quality and know its secret. While, service quality characteristics especially education, are more difficuli to define than those for physical products. This because the includemany important subjective elements. For purposes of analysing quality it is more appropriate to view education as a service industry than as a production process. In TQM, staff members are known asinternal customers and students or learners are primary externalcustomesr or clients. This article describes Total Quality Management and ServiceQuality for improving higher education organization. Two cases in Total Quality Management, and Service Quality are discussed and analyzed to show a little example of higher education organization in Indonesia that has not been performed Total Quality Management and Service Quality yet. The Result of the analysis proves this. Then, authors also show how Total Quality Management as the philosophy can be achieved in higher education organization.Key words: total quality management, service quality, higher education, quality culture.

Abstract

AbstractThe new curriculum for junior high schools known as Curriculum 2004 calls for a change in the name of the school subject PhysicalScience into Physical Knowledge. The change in name has veryimportant consquences on education in science. One of the mostimportant consquences is that the subject should be taught in anintegrated way. This article studies the consquences of the changein the name of the subject on its instruction and whether thestructure of the curriculum enables the subject to be taught in an integratedway. The results of the study indicate that a consquence of the change in the name of the subject is that the way junior high school students learn science is not to be as scientific as scientists; rather, they are to come only to the level of introduction to concepts and scientific work which is applied in nature (which implies applied science). Therefore, there needs to be a change in the formulation of leaning objectives and a simplification of the basic copmpetencies to be achieved and the indicators of achievement. An integrated teaching of the subject in an integrated way, however, can ideally be conducted only when the development of the important aspects (or the strands) of the subject in the curriculum is based on themes or problems instead of objects. The objects selected should represent a facilitation of the mastery of scientific concepts to be developed in students, as seen in the structure of the curriculum used in Singapore or of the one proposed a science teachers association in the United States.Key words: science education curriculum, integrated science education

Abstract

AbstractTeachers of physical education have a major role in handling respiratory problems experienced by any member of the school communitysince they have gained adequate knowledge of physiology and anatomy and skills of giving first-aid treatment, one of which is the skill of providing the basic life support stage of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).When providing the basic life support stage of CPR, they have to rely on the steps called ABC, short for airway management, breathing, and circulation, referring to respiratory duct release, oxygenation, and artificial circulation, since those steps are standard operations for CPR. Therefore, they have to be able to characterize and identify types of respiratory disturbances and threats and their causes as well as to carry out help techniques in order to handle them.Teachers of physical education are considered skilled in conducting CPR since they have had practice in it. Therefore, amount of practice is a factor which defines the amount of success in providing basic life support.Key words: teacher of physical education, cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR)

Abstract

AbstractUniversally, various psychological aspects of children develop through certain stages according to their age level. They go through stages of intellectual, moral and emotional developments, stages of personality and language developments, and stages in the growth of their concept about stories. Each type of development is divided into specific stages. Piaget divides childrens intellectual development, for example, into four stages: the sensory-motor, pre-operational, concrete operational, and formal operational stages. These stages come in accordance with their age development. Each stage has characteristics distinguishing it from anya other stage. The difference in characteristics logically implies in turn a difference in their response to reading matter. Consequently, in selecting reading matter for children, one should consider their age in order to make the selection match their psychological development of children of a certain age level would make the reading matter become uncommunicative because it is too difficult for them or make it uninteresting and boring for them because it is too easy or too simple.Key words: psychological development, intellectual development, selection of reading matter
