Abstract

Abstract: The Civic Education Policy in the Reform Era in Indonesia. This paper presents a preliminary study on civic education in the national educational policy during the reform era since 1998 in Indonesia. The reform movement has impacts on the reform of national education. Civic education has entered the changing paradigm to build good citizens. In the old paradigm, civic education mainly served the political regime hegemony. Civic education was reduced to value or character education per se. The politics of education in the new era has shifted the paradigm of civic education into the standardization according to democratic citizenship education norms. Civic education focuses more on how the competent teachers transform democratic values democratically. Keywords: reform, civic education, politics of education

Abstract

Abstract: Prophetic Literature learning as a Medium to Develop Student Character. Recently, the character education mainstreaming has been boosted in the national education development. Substantially, the concept of character education is included in the formulation of the national education goals. Therefore, one important aspect in the context of character education is the collective consciousness of all parties involved in the activity. One attempt to develop character is through literature learning, including prophetic literature. Prophetic literature learning can provide joy of life and balance between thoughts and feelings. In such a way, students’ dignity is respected and they become whole human beings who possess knowledge, skills, good heart, and sensitivity.Keywords: education goals, literature learning, character building

Abstract

Abstract: The Effectiveness of Learning Sequences in Swimming Skills. This study aims to investigate the appropriateness and effectiveness of learning sequences in swimming skills after the students mastered the crawl stroke. The sequences were that from the crawl stroke to the breast stroke and that from the crawl stroke to the back stroke. This study was a quasi-experimental study using the pretest-posttest group design. The population comprised students of the Faculty of Sports Sciences, Yogyakarta State University. The sample was selected using the purposive sampling technique. The results showed that the sequence from the crawl stroke to the back stroke was more efficient than that from the crawl stroke to the breast stroke in terms of the mastery of swimming skills. Abstract

Abstract: The Contribution of Vocational Education to Economic Development. One of the challenges lying ahead is how to improve the contribution of vocational education to economic development. Several studies confirm that such contribution is very significant. In the current practices of vocational education, however, there is still a mismatch among quantitative, qualitative, location, and time requirements that stem from the world of work. The world of work requires that vocational education produce graduates that are in line with those four requirements. Efforts to maximize the contribution of vocational education to economic development can be undertaken by offering vocational education based on Indonesian characteristics, strengthening link and match with the world of work, integrating soft skills into learning, and implementing entrepreneurship education (small scale enterprise education). Abstract

Abstract: The Effects of the Problem-Based MHM Strategy on the Mathematical Creative Thinking Ability and Perception of Creativity. This paper presents findings from a quasi-experimental study with a static group comparison design by using the problem-based MHM instructional strategy conducted to investigate students’ mathematical creative thinking ability (MCTA) and perception of creativity (PoC). The study involved 126 students from two junior high schools of high and middle categories in Yogyakarta. The instruments were a test of Mathematical Prior Ability (MPA), a test of MCTA, and a scale of PoC. The data were analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and Chi-Square test. The study found that the problem-based MHM instructional strategy was able to improve students’ MCTA better than the conventional instruction, there was association between MCTA and PoC, there was an interaction between the school category and the instructional category on PoC, and there was no such interaction on MCTA. Abstract

Abstract: A Model for the Inculcation of Work Values in Junior High Schools. This research and development study aimed to produce a model for the Inculcation of Work Values (IWV) integrated in skills learning in junior high schools (JHSs). The development consisted of the stages of pre-development, development, and model application, involving 621 Years VIII and IX students of JHSs. The data were collected through observations and questionnaires, and analyzed using the descriptive technique and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The results were as follows. (1) The pre-development stage produced an IWV hypothetical model. (2) The dimensions of the IWV included work interest, work appreciation, technology mastery, entrepreneurship skill, and learning satisfaction. (3) The effective model for the IWV consisted of work motivation construction, production, advancement access, process, and clarification, work product meaning, exhibition and sale, and reflection, (4) The results of the SEM analysis showed that the model for the IWV was effective to develop work values among JHS students. Abstract

Abstract: An Evaluation of Special Schools for Athletes (SMP/SMA Ragunan Jakarta). This evaluation study aims to obtain information about the implementation of the training program by the special schools for athletes (SMP/SMA Ragu- nan), academic and sports achievements, recruitment, motivation, social system, communication, information, and services for the students. The sample consisted of 121 students, specially recruited by the Ministry of Youths and Sports, and 16 coaches/assistants randomly selected. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, and documents, and were analyzed using the descriptive technique. The results show that the school is still needed in accordance with the needs for the sports development in the country, it has not possessed a clear institutional management system, and it is necessary to make new agreements in the form of MOU to regulate the school management by involving relevant institutions. Abstract

Abstract: The Relationship between the Program Organization and the Learning Tutors’ Performance in Learning Activity Workshops. This study aims to investigate the functional relationship between learning tutors’ motivation, supervision intensity, program organization, and learning tutors’ work performance. This study was a survey using a correlational method. The sample, consisting of 63 learning tutors, was randomly selected. The results show that there is a positive correlation between: (1) program organization and learning tutors’ work performance of with r = 0.84; (2) work motivation and learning tutors’ work performance of with r = 0.77; and (3) supervision intensity and learning tutors’ work performance of with r = 0.68. The regression equation is Ý = 0,58X1 + 0,47X2 + 0.42X3 – 29.73. Keywords: program organization, work motivation, supervision intensity, learning tutors’ work performance

Abstract

Abstract: An Attempt to Improve Teachers’ Professional Attitudes through Reading Habit Improvement. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the reading habit in increasing the professional attitude of history teachers in senior high schools (SHSs) in Medan City. This was a quasi-experimental study involving history teachers in SHSs in Medan City. The data were collected by using questionnaires, one to measure the level of teachers’ reading habit and one to measure the level of teachers’ professional attitude. The data were analyzed using the analysis of covariance. The results of this study showed that the average level of teachers’ reading habit increased, followed by the increase of the level of teachers’ professional attitude. It can be concluded that teachers’ condition after the treatment is better. In other words, the reading habit is effective to increase the professional attitude of history teachers in SHSs in Medan City. Keywords: reading habit, professional attitude

Abstract

Abstract: Actualization of Sports Values as an Attempt to Build Nation Character. Honesty, caring, politeness, loyalty, discipline, and responsibility are some good values that should be the foundations the nation’s life. At present, however, they are rarely found in daily life. Deceit, carelessness, rudeness, hypocrisy, and negligence are more dominant in the country. In sports, some good values, such as devotion, fairness, discipline, cooperation, and hard work can be actualized as an attempt to rebuild the nation character. They must be actualized in various aspects of life through leaders’ exemplary deeds in the family, school, society, and country.
