Abstract

Abstract: Professional Teachers’ Post-Certification Performances. This study aims to investigate professional teachers’ post-certification performances. It was an evaluation research study employing the goal-free evaluation model by Scriven. The sample, selected from a population of 548 teachers who have received professional incentives Sleman Regency, comprised 55 teachers (5 from kindergartens, 28 from elementary schools, 13 from junior high schools, 7 from senior high schools, and 7 from vocational schools), principals, and staff members of the Office of Education of Sleman Regency. The data were collected through questionnaires, interviews, focus group discussions, documents, and assessment sheets, and were analyzed using quantitative and qualitative descriptive techniques. The results show that the post-certification performances of the majority of professional teachers are not satisfactory yet, shown by the fact that of the 17 indicators, 7 indicators are good and 10 other indicators are fair. Abstract

Abstract: The Contributions of Principals’ Leadership and Compensation to the Job Satisfaction of State Junior High School Teachers in Semarang. The objective of the study is to investigate the contributions of principals’ leadership and compensation to teachers’ job satisfaction. The sample consisted of 288 teachers of state junior high schools in Semarang. The data were collected using a questionnaire and were analyzed using a regression technique. The results show that: (1) individually and aggregately, there are positive and significant contributions of principals’ leadership and compensation to teachers’ job satisfaction; and (2) 45.7% of teachers’ job satisfaction is contributed by principals’ leadership and 30.1% by compensation. It can be concluded that principals’ leadership has a greater contribution than compensation to the improvement of the satisfaction of teachers of state junior high schools in Semarang. Abstract

Abstract: An Evaluation of the Implementation of the SBC in Geography Instruction in SHSs in Yogyakarta City. This study aims to describe the imple- mentation of the School Based Curriculum (SBC) in geography instruction in senior high schools (SHSs) in Yogyakarta City in terms of teachers’ dimension, consisting of instructional programs, instructional steps, and learning outcome assessment. It was an evaluation study employing a model by Stake by comparing the instructtional processes conducted by teachers with the appropriate criteria. The population comprised 56 geography teachers in 11 state SHSs and 41 private SHSs in Yogyakarta City. The sample was 30% of the total schools selected by the school category (upper, middle, and lower) based on the results of the national assessment in geography in 2008. The data were collected through a questionnaire, observations, and documents and were analyzed using the qualitative descriptive technique. The findings show that the instructional programs, instructional steps, learning outcome assessment are in the good category. Abstract

Abstrak: Pahami Tindakan Anda: Teori Pembelajaran di balik Praktik di Kelas. Studi kasus ini bertujuan mengungkap sejauh mana mahasiswa calon guru mampu memberikan alasan atas tindakan kelas yang dilakukan dalam pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi pekerja industri kerajinan di Kabupaten Bantul dan Kota Yogyakarta. Data tentang tindakan, yang dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan non-partisipan yang didukung rekaman video, dianalisis dengan analisis model Blaxter, Hughes and Tight’s (2006), sementara data tentang alasan tindakan dianalisis dengan model Miles & Huberman (1994: 10). Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa calon guru dalam penelitian ini: (1) tidak selalu mampu memberikan alasan yang tepat atas tindakan yang secara pedagogik benar; (2) tidak mampu memberikan alasan atas sebagian besar tindakan yang secara pedagogik tidak tepat; dan (3) memberikan alasan yang berubah-ubah atas tindakan yang secara pedagogik tidak jelas tujuannya. Temuan kajian ini mendukung keraguan Chappell & Hawke (2003) apakah para guru memahami apa yang mereka lakukan. Kata kunci: studi kasus, teori pembelajaran, praktik di kelas

Abstract

Abstract: Developing an Instructional Design to Improve Kindergarten Teachers’ Competencies in the Perspective of Inclusive Education. This study aims to develop an instructional design set to improve kindergarten teachers’ competencies in inclusive education in terms of pedagogic, personal, social, and professional aspects. It was a research and development study involving the stages of predevelopment, model development, product validation. The sample comprised 34 kindergarten teachers selected by the purposive sampling technique. The results show that: (1) the majority of kindergarten teachers do not understand the concept of inclusive education, (2) a set of indicators of kindergarten teachers’ competencies in inclusive education and a set of competency instruments and instructional design can be produced; (3) the implementation of the instructional design model is capable of increasing kindergarten teachers’ competencies in inclusive education. The instructional design significantly improves kindergarten teachers’ pedagogic, social, and professional competencies, but it does not significantly increase the personal competency. Abstract

Abstract: The Learning of Physical Education Based on Multi-Aspect Competence, Collaboration, and Synthesis of Learning Resource Advantages. This study aims to: (1) sharpen the pragmatic aspects of a model for briefing physical education student-teachers on their competence; (2) improve the institutional policy concerning ways of briefing them on their competence in physical education oriented to the present conditions; (3) develop the substance of the physical education microteaching; (4) improve the recognition of expertise from peers; and (5) map the networking of the partner institutions. This study employed a combination of methods consisting of a library study, descriptive survey, and action research. The data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The findings show that the briefing model should comprise (1) multi-aspect competence, i.e. pedagogic, personal, professional, and social aspects; (2) collaboration by involving other relevant and competent parties; and (3) learning-resource sharing by making use of advantages of learning resources in the campus and partner schools. Abstract

Abstract: A Model for the Supervision in the Learning of Physical Education in Elementary School. This study aimed to optimize the functions of principals and supervisors in the improvement of physical education teachers’ performance. It was a research and development study in which the preliminary steps employed the qualitative approach to obtain information on the existing models at present and attempts to develop one. The result of this study showed that the model for the supervision in the learning of physical education significantly affected the performance of physical education teachers in elementary schools. In other words, the model was effective to improve the quality of teachers’ performance and students’ achievement. Keywords: supervision model, performance, physical education

Abstract

Abstract: Developing Mathematics Student-Teachers’ Problem Solving Competence and Belief Through a Collaborative Learning Strategy. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of a collaborative problem-based learning strategy in developing mathematics student-teachers’ problem solving competence and belief in mathematics learning. It was a quasi-experimental study employing a 2 × 2 factorial design with two dependent variables. The subjects were 83 students of Mathematics Education Study Program, Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Yogyakarta State University, who took the Discrete Mathematics course in the semester of September - December 2009. The instruments were a test on problem-solving competence, a psychological scale to measure the students' belief, observation sheets, and interview guides. The data were analyzed using two-way MANOVA at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results show that the collaborative problem-based learning strategy is superior to the conventional learning strategy to develop students’ problem solving competence and belief in mathematics learning. Abstract

Abstract: The Effectiveness of the Principal’s Internal Dimensions in the Instructional Leadership. This study aims to investigate and analyze the effectiveness of internal dimensions related to the principal’s instructional leadership in SMP Negeri 2 Glagah, Banyuwangi. This study involved 140 participants as the sample, selected using the purpose sampling technique. The data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire and were analyzed using the descriptive technique. The results indicated that the internal dimensions were very effective, shown by (1) the indicator of the school’s mission, with a score of 516.3 and a percentage of 93.939%; (2) the indicator of the instructional organization with a score of 525.5 and a percentage of 93. 839%; (3) the indicator of instructional practice improvement with a score of 511.0 and a percentage of 91.25%; and (4) the indicator of positive school climate improvement with a score of 490.6 and a percentage of 87.611%. On the whole, the mean score of internal dimensions related to instructional leadership was 510.85 with a percentage of 91.22 %. Keywords: effectiveness, instructional leadership, internal dimensions

Abstract

Abstract: Constructivism in Science Learning in Elementary Schools: Epistemological and Ontological Perspectives and Doubts in the Praxis. A constructivist perspective focuses on children’s contribution to the construction of knowledge. Constructivism believes that a child is a real inquirer and discoverer who is actively engaged in building theories about the world and the way it works without the aid of direct instructions. The implication is that teachers have to give wider mandates to students, to provide them with contexts for experimentation to occur, and to facilitate theory building by providing helpful experiences. Epistemologically and ontologically, there are still doubts about the application in practice. This, however, should not be a constraint for science teachers to implement basic principles of constructivism as one of the alternative solutions to educational reform and movement in the elementary school science.
