Abstract

The purpose of this article is to outline the current state of knowledge in relation of economic involvement and ethnicity in Malaysia. Firstly, this chapter will review on the state of employment in relation to the ethnic groups in Malaysia. This is important since the income factor is one of the major factors that determine the level of economic participation and the state of wealth of individuals. Stable and adequate level of income is one of the determinants of wealth accumulation for individuals other than wealth and net wealth level. This raises the question of employment opportunities among different ethnic groups in Malaysia. The root of the employment opportunities, it can be argued, stems from the access of different ethnic groups to high education, which also discussed in the article.

The background of this writing is the decreasing of nationalism among the youth of the nation. Nowadays, the nationalism seems to be sunk. Nowadays, it is facing a great challenge to civilization, named globalization. As the basic drive and the élan vital, the flexibility of Indonesia nationalism is being tested in terms of the ability to change, so it is hoped that it is always accurate in answering the occurring-demand. The flexibility is not decreasing the nationalism; it is, in fact, shows the deep of nationalism itself so at the same time it is still alive and continuously metamorphosed. The aim of this writing is to investigate the role of the family in the nationalism, both individually and together among the youth. This research conducted in the analytical description method. The discussion shows that the family environment has a role in growing the nationalism. It is also shown that the family has a great role in forming the nationalism among the youth. It is concluded that the education in the family gives a good impact toward the nationalism among the youth. Parents who educate their children to love their nation by asking them to follow the national events in their childhood will help the children to love their nation and country.

Abstract

Ciomas in this study is an area located in the slope of Gunung Salak, Bogor regency (Buitenzorg) (Besluit. No. 7 year 1882). During the administration of Governor General Herman Willem Daendels, the northern part of this area had been sold to a private party, with the status of the land as private. The extent of the area was about 9.000 bau or approximately 7.220 ha (1 bau = 0,8 ha). As the consequence of the status, the government’s authority over the land in Ciomas became limited compared to the authority over the government’s land. On the other hand, the authority of the private land (landeigenar) owner of Ciomas—who was called the landlord (landheer), over the local inhabitant was ‘almost’ unlimited. According to the regulation of the private land, the land owner has special rights, which was usually held by the government.  In the colonial archive, the land owner was called “landlord” by the people and the government. It is different from the concept of landlord in the time Western Europe feudalism. However, in certain terms, there are similarities, including the special rights. This can be understood, regarding that Netherland who gave birth to VOC, was a feudal country.

Abstract

The relation of ethnics refers to interaction among different ethnics (interethnic) or interaction in the same ethnical groups (intraethnic). The correlation of ethnic in this chapter focuses on the correlation among ethnics (interethnic). The relation among ethnics or peoples has been the main issue discussed in many countries whose citizens are from multi-ethnic. Groups of ethnics building “social border” among the ethnics are potential to create conflicts among them. Social border among ethnics can also cause dissatisfaction which is represented by particular social actions that can lead the people to open and bleed conflicts. An example of real ethnical conflict occurred in the ex-United of Yugoslavia, where a business of an ethic causing destruction to other ethnic and consequently led to the ruin of the country.

Abstract

In general, research and discourse on the concept of identity has been naturally evolved as the changes of social structures in social processes, such as industrial affairs, modernization, and globalization, are expanding as well. The concept of identity, meanwhile, has also changed by following the development of social thoughts, i.e. the formation and change in the philosophy of knowledge paradigm, such as the development of structural theoretical perspective to post-structural and post-modernism (Bendle, 2002; Lee, 2007).

Abstract

Malay language is stipulated in the Law Article 152 as the national and official language of Malaysia. Therefore, literature using Malay language as the medium is adopted as the archipelago literature (Mohd. Taib Osman, 1971; Ismail Hussein, 1971). Considering that Malay language is understood by diverse ethnics, it can be concluded that the language holds an important role in developing understanding among people in Malaysia. The literature that grows and develops in the heart of a nation is the best foundation for building a united/integrated nation. Literary works have long contributed towards the culture and the civilization of a nation so that they become a part of the features and characteristics of a nation. Literary works are the encyclopedia of ideology, values, and cultures of all the people in Malaysia who give support towards the archipelago literature.
