Abstract

Many people write about art and works of art. The discussions about works of arts use new paradigms such as phenomenology, post-structuralism, semiotics as well as hermeneutics, to reveal the meanings of art and visual art. In the process of evaluating and analyzing works of art, some of the paradigms tend to pay no attention to the subject (the artist). This article is written to remind that an artist as the subject needs to be regarded as the centre of meanings as a whole, including the background that surrounds the art creating process.

Abstract

Self deconstruction is a means of breaking down the established art creation, representing individual identity and abandoning modern art or conventional art creation. It was applied in a work of art, whose forms were cracked wood constructed like paintings. In the new concept of art creation, self-deconstruction of Derrida and Nagajurna was applied. The deconstruction as a concept of creating and acting bravely to break down reality and imitating self creation was applied until the zero point. In other words, the emptiness is stability. “All possible” is the concept of creation applied by the writer. The concept was realized by using used wood as a medium of expression of artistic moments. The installation was composed of several different media such as wood, plastic and iron. The concept also abandoned single medium (the modern view of art creation). This art creation used the integration of creation and recreation as well. The creation technique applied was assemblage, collage, and knockdown system with shifting understanding, namely function replacement. The knock-down system in the installation was made based on the artist's will or on the art viewers, display areas and the surrounding. In the name of deconstruction, the writer believes that the created arts are multi-interpretable. Key words: deconstruction, installation art and interpretation

Abstract

Langen Mandrawanara is one of rare arts, created by Patih Danurejo in the reign of Sultan Hamengkubuwana VIII. Besides its low frequency of performance, the rareness is caused by the difficulties of that dance with Ramayana epic theme. The art of Langen Mandrawanara is performed with squatting and the dialogs are carried out through tembang, traditional Javanese songs. The difficulties make Langen Mandrawanara less interesting to young generation incapable of singing the songs. As the time goes by, efforts are made by art groups and organizations to preserve Langen Mandrawanara, which are good steps to support the art preservation. The one carried out by Langen Mandrawanara community in Sembungan Village, Bangunjiwo, Bantul becomes the key to the future of the art. The endeavor also becomes an appeal to the tourists. The application of pseudo traditional arts is quite relevant as an attempt to keep Langen Mandrawanara art improving, without neglecting its essential aspects to be preserved. Using a dynamic concept of performance, Langen Mandrawanara is hoped to attract the viewers, especially of the young generation. Key words: Langen Mandrawanara, preservation, tourism

Abstract

The way of breath taking and torso movement are the esthetic characteristic of Yogyakartan Golek Menak dance. This dance, which was created by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX, is a dance inspired by Golek Menak puppet played by a dalang (the puppet player). The dance movement became a reference of Golek Menak Dance. The movement characteristic of Golek Menak puppet taken by Golek Menak dance is unjal ambegan (a way of taking a breath). Every dancer has to master that movement to be applied in every movement activity. However, not every dancer can do it well because unjal ambegan must be followed by torso movement to emphasize the movement so that the dance becomes beautiful. Therefore, unjal ambegan is not only a way of breath taking but also two body activities interrelated, not able to be independent. Both are ways of breath taking involving torso movement. Key words: Golek Menak dance, unjal ambegan, torso movement

Abstract

Illustration is an important element to support the success of printed media performance, such as magazine. A magazine that consists of only writing without any pictures is boring to the readers. Illustrations in magazines function to help explaining articles, as well as to attract and illustrate the magazines' performance. Therefore, photo journalists' job in taking pictures or recording events around human life is significant to determine the magazines' success visually. Basically to design magazines a solid team work among photographer, designer and editor is absolutely needed to get the best result. No matter how good the pictures are, the visual performance will not be interesting without good design. On the other hand, magazines are not marketable and the articles will not be interesting without attractive pictures. Key words: photography, magazine performance
