Abstract

The field of medical knowledge is immense and has different stages of training which a medical student must undergo in which studies show a high prevalence of psychological morbidity during these stages. Depression is one of the most common psychological morbidity in this demographic, with prevalence of depression up to 70% in several studies. Therefore, it is important to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of depression, especially in medical students. A descriptive cross sectional study was done on the first year medical student of the Faculty of Medicine of Udayana University from November 2015 to January 2016. The samples was selected using simple random sampling. Interview using questionnaire was done on students chosen as samples, and depression status was assessed using Beck,s Depression Inventory (BDI). Of 100 samples, 68% was categorized as normal, 26% as mild mood disturbances, 3% as borderline clinical depression, 2% as moderate depression, and 1% as severe depression. Depression was more common in younger students aged 16-17 years old, female, students who lives alone, those with introverted personality, students who prefer reading and being alone, and those reported decreased body weight and sleeping difficulty. keyword:awareness, depression, medical student

Abstract

Asperger syndrome is the term applied to the mildest and highest functioning end known as the spectrum of pervasive developmental disorders (or the autism spectrum). It is known to be related to a neurologically based disorder of development. Most of the causes of these disorders are unknown, which are deviations or abnormalities in three broad aspects of development: social relatedness and social skills, the use of language for communicative purposes and certain behavioral and stylistic characteristics involving repetitive or perseverative features and a limited but intense range of interests. It is the presence of these three categories of dysfunction, which can range from relatively mild to severe, which clinically defines all of the pervasive developmental disorders, from AS through to classic autism. Some researchers have suggested that the basic neuropsychological deficit is different for the two conditions, but others have been unconvinced that any meaningful distinction can be made between them. Abstract

Insomnia is one of the more common complaints patients present to their physicians. Sleep problems affect up to one-third of all Americans, and the loss of workplace productivity. Patients with acute insomnia generally respond well to various sedative hypnotic medications, but chronic insomnia is a different challenge. Physicians and patients may raise concerns about the long-term use of sedative hypnotic medications. Even in light of these concerns, however, the chronic insomnia remains, ostensibly leaving the physician few choices. A number of promising nonpharmacologic strategies are available that physicians can easily implement. Through the use of selfrating instruments and a sleep log, physicians can bring the sleep problem into better focus and monitor the efficacy of clinical interventions. Certain behavioral techniques, such as sleep hygiene, stimulus control, and sleep restriction, can be effective remedies for chronic insomnia. The use of cranial electric stimulation for insomnia is also showing promising results. Through careful assessment and the adoption of simple nonpharmacologic strategies, the physician’s interventions may result in a good night’s sleep.

Abstract

Cholesterol is a type of fat that is found in our blood, which is produced by liver. Hereby this research will be done on elderly in an old folk home called as Panti Jompo Werdha Tresna. The samples that was taken was both female and male, age varies around 60 years old to 80 years old. Blood was taken together with height and weight to make the correlation between all this two variables. The study design for this research is descriptive study. 20 blood samples have been taken. From the data that obtained in the results it is concluded that if the elderly with high body mass index (BMI) tend to have high total cholesterol. Mean serum cholesterol in the study population was 195.25±32.48   mg/dL(>199 mg/dL) in 60% of the investigated men and 53.3% of the investigated women. As a conclusion, in this study found that the prevalence of excess body weight and age is not associated with the prevalence off increasing total cholesterol compare to other studies. Maybe it is because of total population that is taken in this study is very less compare to others. So the results do not really show the prevalence in population. It is advisable to do some research on the elderly with a higher number of samples so that it can represent the condition within population. Keywords: Cholesterol, Body Mass Index, Age

Risk factor for MID include a history of: Hardening of arteries (arthrosclerosis), high blood pressure (hypertension), smoking, and stroke. In MID, disruption of blood flow leads to damaged brain tissue. For diagnose the patient with MID, the most important thing we must do is anamnesis. From anamnesis, we can get history of sufficient exposure, Onset of symptoms, checking sign and doing tests, and also ask whether the patient has risks factors about MID or not. There is no known definitive treatment for MID. Treatment is based on control of symptoms. Other treatments may be advised based on the individual condition.

Abstract

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disease which is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms. The motor symptoms which are also known as cardinal features are resting tremor, bradykinesia, rigidity and postural instability. The etiology is unknown in most cases but there are findings that relate Parkinson’s disease to the genetics and environmental factors. The clinical course of Parkinson’s disease varies from patient to patient. Levodopa is still the main therapy of this disease although it leads to motor complications as the disease progresses.

Abstract

Blood glucose also known as blood sugar is the amount of glucose that can be found in the blood. Carbohydrate foods are the main source of energy for the human body. The rise of blood glucose is usually at peak when the individual’s age reach around 50’s as the body function decreases which effects the glucose metabolism and also the elderly body weight. The purpose of this study is to know the prevalence of blood glucose and body mass index in elderly individual. The design of the study is descriptive cross-sectional study. This study was carried out at Panti Werdha Tresna which is located at Jln. Gumitir, Denpasar,Bali. The number of elderly individuals in that old folks house was around 40 which consist of both females and males. The age range was 53-80 years old. A day before the research was carried out the elderly individuals was given informed consent and was asked to fast for at least 8 hours before the blood sample was taken. The amount of blood withdrawn was about 2cc. The results showed that 1 person (4.8%) of male and 3 person (14.3%) of females are overweight while 2 person (9.5 %) females are obese. Total 6 elderly individual with BMI above normal range. For blood glucose more than 100 mg/dL, there are 3 person (60%) males and 12 person (75%) females. The prevalence of high blood glucose is higher in female (75%) compared with male (60%). Based on the results, it can be concluded that the number of samples that has high blood glucose and high BMI is only 2 person (13.3%) of the total samples. It is  suggested that the government could create a program that can reduce morbidity and mortality due to complications of high blood sugar in the elderly individuals. Keywords: blood glucose, body mass index, elderly.
