Abstract

Violence in the name of God—terrorism attacks, violence toward minority even inter religious conflicts—has nowadays become a global issue. In Indonesia, there are at least 30 cases of “holy” violence committed in the last ten years. The demand to have such freedoms, as of expression, of speech, of getting access to information, could be seen as a process of an ongoing democracy. Internet, in this context, is one of the popular media to channel this ambitions of democracy. On the other hand, many Muslim extremists use this change and this media to channel the ideology of jihad. This article aims to shed light on how the Indonesia netizen’s (cyber community) response to those kind of radical Islamist messages. By using descriptive content analysis to the comments of the respective issue in Kaskus website, this paper sees the variety of the responses that would contribute to the prevention of violence in the name of religion and suggest some solutions.

Abstract

The Japanese occupation period in Indonesia began in 1942 and ended on August 17, 1945. The entry of Japan into Indonesia brought broader changes for the Indonesian people, especially in education, which during the Dutch colonial period was discriminatory. Japan realizes that the majority of Indonesian people adheres Islam, at first this was not a problem, as evidenced by Japan's cooperation with Muslims in the early days of entering Indonesia. Japan established PETA (Defender of the Motherland) an institution consisting of Indonesians. In this organization Indonesians were educated and trained to hold arms, the Office of Religious Affairs (Shumubu), the Majlis Syuro Muslimin Indonesia, and Hezbollah were established. Although furthermore Japan must consider which of the Muslims could fulfill its colonial interests in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

Developing a training in religious pluralism to a young generation at a university level in Indonesia seems to work out as the university is a highly intentional agent of for that coaching. It is a place where its stakeholders, including its students, are inclined to bow to the academic tradition, and where the religious pluralism can be a subject that they study and practice.  This process is a potential medium to reduce religious conflict and violence in the country. This paper found this dynamic at the Universitas Bhayangkara Jakarta that perpetuates the religious pluralism by its well-organized academic programs, mainly by its discussions and dialogues. This university applies this training to perpetuate religious tolerance and social harmony among its administrative and teaching staff.

Abstract

This article discusses the history of the establishment of Islamic banking in Indonesia. The author examines the derivers of their establishment and argues that, aside other aspects, political aspects give contribution to the establishment of the Islamic banking. He describes a number of evidences of how politics play an important role in the success of their establishment; one of those proofs is the economic and political Islam interdependence which can be read in the idea of Indonesian Muslims on establishing Islamic banks, which is influenced by political content. At the beginning, the relationship between Muslims and the New Order was covered with suspicions and prejudices. The rulers of the New Order in the 1970's were still suspicious of the idea on the establishment of an Islamic state or the realization of the Jakarta Charter. Until recent days, the idea is still debated.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah has consistently been using the method of hisab wujûd al-hilâl (the calculation resulted in a matter of time and the position of beginning new moon of Qamariyyah) for about four decades from 1970 to the present time. This steadiness implies that this method turns to be an ideological identity of Muhammadiyah in determining the first day of the fasting month of Ramadhan. Here, this Islamic mass organization believes that a political effort with a particular identity will have a huge impact on making the method of hisab wujûd al-hilâl as a reliable reference to decide ru`yah (seeing the new moon when the sun set sat on 29 of the Qamariyah month), and on encouraging majority of Muslim in Indonesia to use it.

Abstract

The author examines the concept of Maqasid al-Shari’ah that was used or revitalized as arguments for 53 legal opinions (fatwas) of Dewan Syariah Nasional (DSN) of the Indonesian Ulama Councils (MUI) issued during 2000-2006. Because the purpose of the Maqasid al-Shari’ah is for public interests (maslaha), the examination of the Maqasid al-Shari’ah was conducted by observing the application of fiqh principles in DSN-MUI fatwas, particularly those that related to maslaha. The study found that 50 of 53 fatwas of DSN-MUI included the fiqh principles in all judgments, despite of being equipped by basic Islamic reasoning principles such as Al-Quran, Hadis, Ijma’ and Qiyas. There are 11 possible fiqh principles for use in all fatwas, the minimum is one principle and the maximum is five principles. Overall, the fiqh principles were used 134 times. This means that the average use of the fiqh principles is 2.5 in every fatwa. The most used fiqh principle was the axiom stating that the basic legal principle for muamala is permissible as long as no proposition/law forbids it. The general principle is often used without other specific supporting principles. It should be noted that the DSN-MUI legal opinions tend to be permissive or liberal and less accurate (wijhat al-nazar), despite their validity.
