A case control study was carried out in Sardjito General Hospital Yogyakarta to evaluate the risk factors for gestational trophoblastic disease. One hundred and seven cases of trophoblastic diseases fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Data were obtained from the hospital medical record, and every case was conducted by 2 controls (normal delivery). It was found that woman age 19 years old and 35 years old showed the high risk trophoblastic. disease with odds ratio 7.85 and 6.6 respectively, parity 3-4 and . 5 increased the risk of trophoblastic disease with odds ratio 3.12 and 18.45 respectively, blood group A had odds ratio 3.17, and all of these variables showed statistically significant in bivariate analysis and multivariate analysis.Gravidity 4-5 and 6, last interval pregnancy 1-24 months and last pregnancy result with abortion had relative high odds ratio and statistically significant in bivariate analysis but not in multivariate analysis with stepwise logistic regression. There was a trend for increasing odds ratio with the increasing number of the history of spontaneous abortion, but not statistically significant. The study concluded that young (less than 19) and old (more than 35) women with high parity (more than 3), and with blood group A has a high risk to develop trophoblastic disease.Key words : pregnancy - trophoblastic disease - risk factor

Seven patients of open tibial fractures type III C were treated in the Emergency Unit, Sardjito hospital from 1990 to 1995. Three patients underwent early amputation and four patients ultimately required secondary amputation from three to twelve days after vascular repair intervention.Open tibial fractures associated with vascular trauma need an immediate decision between early amputation and limb salvage. Prospective studies are important before a well-defined protocol or objective criteria for early amputation can be considered.Key word : open fracture ââ¬â tibial fracture ââ¬â lower fracture ââ¬â type Ill C ââ¬â amputation

Malayan filariasis is still the major public health problem in Indonesia. In endemic area, when microfilaremia and clinical manifestations are absent, the diagnosis of malayan filariasis is extremely important, particularly for filariasis control. With the development of hybridoma technology, it is possible to produce monoclonal antibody against any stage of Brugia malayi, which is capable of detecting the circulating parasite antigen in malayan filariasis sera.Sandwich ELISA, assay using Fab 4 monoclonal antibody could identify circulating parasite antigen in human sera. With this assay it was found that: 100% of sera from symptomatic-microfilaremic, 50% of sera from symptomatic-amicrofilaremic, 82,1% of sera from asymptomatic-microfilaremic and 24,4% of sera from asymptomatic-amicrofilaremic residents of filariasis-endemic areas positively contained circulating antigen. In comparison with the conventional method, the sensitivity and specificity of this new technique are 85,2% and 75,4% respectively. From this study it is concluded that Sandwich ELISA is proved to be very sensitive as an immunological test to detect filarial infection without any clinical manifestation or microfilaria in the blood.Key words : malayan filariasis - circulating antigen - monoclonal antibody - Sandwich ELISA - asymptomatic-amicrofilaremic.

Morphological observations were made on the adult filarial worms of nonperiodic form of B.malayi (32 worms), the new subspecies of the causative agent of filariasis in East Kalimantan (3,4). The filaria parasites were compared to the old subspecies of nocturnally subperiodic form of B.malayi (25 worms) from Kendari and the animal filaria of B.pahangi (20 worms) which were also sympatric in East Kalimantan. The adult filarial worms (originated from human/animal carrier) were available from dissection of artificially infected laboratory animal of Meriones unguiculatus. For the artificial infection, Aedes togoi Theobald mosquito were used as laboratory vector. The observations revealed a morphological gap, between B.malayi (nonperiodic form) and B.pahangi coexisting in East Kalimantan showed a reproductive isolation as a different species. Morphologically, the B.malayi from East Kalimantan should be put in the same species category with the nocturnally subperiodic form of B.malayi from Kendari. Showing more anthropo or zoophilic (cf 1,2) properties of parasite intraspecific variabilities in morphology, were also recorded from the filarial worms with an average of the nonperiodic form shorter than the nocturnally subperiodic form of B.malayi, but longer than the animal parasites of B.pahangi.Key words: B. malayi ââ¬â morphological gap ââ¬â reproductive isolation ââ¬â morphological variabilities

In traumatic cataract extraction it is often difficult to assess the result of the operation and the recovery of the visual acuity because there are many complications and recurrence of the previous uveitis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the visual function improvement and many influencing factors after extraction of traumatic cataract with intraocular lens implantations in children.Eleven cases of posterior chamber intraocular lens implantations in cataract traumatic children were reported in Dr Sardjito General Hospital between 1990 and 1995.There were 10 boys and 1 girl. The mean age was 8 years ranging from 3 years to 14 years. The visual acuity improvement occurred in 10 cases and in 1 case the visual acuity remained stable. Five cases had post traumatic uveitis that reccurred after cataract extractions and IOL implantation and 1 patient showed retinal cicatrization identified after the operation.Key words: traumatic cataract - traumatic uveitis - intra ocular lens implantation - retinal cicatrization -Â visual acuity recovery

A study on some anthropometry measurements of soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta had been done. The objective of the study was to investigate the differences of anthropometry measurements for different types of sport on soccer and badminton athletes in Yogyakarta. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 soccer players and 20 badminton players, with the age of 17 - 25 years. The t-test was used to know the differences of anthropometry measurements between soccer and badminton players. The results indicated that the average height, body weight, sitting height, biiliocristal breadth, upper arm and thigh girth of soccer players were significantly greater than those of badminton players. The biacromial breadth, calf girth, arm and total leg length between the two sport groups were not significantly different. There were somatotype differences between soccer and badminton players, and the major difference in the distribution of the two samples was that the soccer players were less endomorphic and ectomorphic than the badminton players.Further studies may explain those results with more consideration on different types of exercise performed by more samples.Key words: sport anthropology - soccer & badminton athletes - anthropometry somatotype bodymeasurements

Cows milk has been recognised as an almost ideal food because it serves as a source of complete nutrients. Unfortunately, there are some people who cannot drink milk (milk intolerance) because lack of lactase.. High frequency of milk intolerance is found in developing or tropical countries and non-Caucasian race. It is a problem for public nutrition in those countries. Lactase is an inducible enzyme. The inductor is lactose, a major carbohydrate in milk. Some studies suggested that milk intolerance was influenced by genetic factors, diet and milk drinking habit. Efforts to overcome milk intolerance by providing low lactose milk had been done, but the result was not yet successful.Key words: protein calori malnutrition - cows milk - lactase deficiency - milk intolerance

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, is an x-linked inherited disease which is responsible for episodic hemolytic anemia. The incidence correlates with the malarial epidemic in many area like Mediterranean, Africa and Asia including South East Asia. This paper reports a simple, cheap, traumatic, and reliable method screening test called formazan ring developed by Nishiyama. Among 145 new-born infants in this report the low enzyme activity was as high as 9(6.2%) Including 2(1.4%) G-6-PD deficiency.Key words: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency - x-linked inherited disease - formazan ring test - neonatal screening
