To examine these aspects, the authors laboring political unconscious horizon of interpretation, proposed by Jameson, through three concentric horizons, consisting of the political, social, and historical horizons. The political horizon of interpretation showed that the SKATM narrative is a socially symbolic act of the author over social contradictions that cannot directly be resolved. Additionally, the social horizon of interpretation revealed that the symbolic social actions of SKATM are based on ideologemes or antagonistic social class collective discourses. Later, the historical horizon of interpretation demonstrated that the ideologemes drama at the social level of SKATM are held in a wider space. From the findings, SKATM manifests the folkloric form as a symbolic act, class struggle ideologeme, and cultural revolution

Abstract

Advertisement does not only promote products but also conveys a message behind the promotion. One of the current trending concepts is femvertising. The initial purpose of femvertising is to fill the concept of advertising that uses pro-female talent, words, and images to empower women and girls. As a result, advertising has attracted more consumers and evolved into a movement aimed at selling more items to women rather than a genuine subversion and changing gender stereotypes. Lux is also one of the brands indicated to use the advertising concept, as in its advertisement "LUX Berani Cantik 30" (LUX Dare to be Beautiful 30). Following the advertising concept, this research explores how LUX represents feminist elements in its advertisement using the Multimodal Critical Discourse Analysis (MCDA) theory by Machin and Mayr (2012) and a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings demonstrate that lexical and visual multi modal aspects indicate the interrelation of meaning between interconnected aspects. The resulting meaning in Lux ads reflects the interpretation of feminine women who dare to express their beauty in front of the public.

Abstract

As Homo Ludens, human beings inherently possess a penchant for play. They exhibit the remarkable ability to craft various forms of playful devices, one of which revolves around the skillful use of language as their primary vehicle for verbal communication. This paper explores the humorous dimensions inherent in language usage, as artfully harnessed in the signage adorning truck containers. By meticulously scrutinizing these container signs displayed on trucks navigating the highways of Indonesia, this study unveils that the creators of these signs employ three fundamental mechanisms, as articulated by Bergson's (1983) theory, to elicit smiles and laughter from their audience. These mechanisms encompass repetition, inversion, and, most notably, the concept of reciprocal interference within series. Such effects are achieved through various techniques, including phonological alterations, ambiguities, juxtapositions, and the deliberate incorporation of taboos and insults.

Abstract

Mother tongue, used as the language of instruction, is considered vital for effective pedagogy, individual rights recognition, and social justice. It offers marginalized students a more efficient pathway to learning compared to foreign or hegemonic national languages like English or Filipino. Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) challenges systems favoring colonial languages and asserts the importance of children's first languages. However, the political and ideological dimensions of mother tongue are often overlooked, as it can be manipulated to serve specific agendas in nation-building efforts. While some analyze its linguistic aspects, this paper delves into its political nature, exploring how it intersects with ideologies shaping nation-building and potentially nation-destroying processes. This article asserts that the mother tongue serves not only as a learning tool but also as a contested political concept vital for envisioning inclusive nation-building. By examining MTB-MLE in the Philippines, it explores how the mother tongue influences nation-making, as well as reimagining and shaping national identities.

Abstract

Translation’s core ideology lies in guiding translators' decision-making processes, particularly concerning the social and cultural aspects of source and target texts. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. It delved into the translators’ ideological stance in rendering an English novel into Indonesian, focusing on vocative verbal exchanges. The analysis employed Miles and Huberman's interactive data analysis techniques (2014), incorporated Molina and Albir's translation procedures (2002), as well as Newmark's methods (1988). Venuti's theory (2003) was utilized to unveil the translator's ideology. Findings reveal that the translator is inclined towards foreignization at the word and phrase levels. This was juxtaposed with a preference for domestication at the clause and sentence levels. This suggests a nuanced approach, where the translator aimed to preserve the source text's essence in smaller linguistic units while enhancing readability in larger units for the target audience. In essence, the translator strategically positions themselves between the source and target languages, neither leaning too closely towards one nor the other, striving for a neutral stance that upholds the original message while ensuring accessibility for the target readers.
