Abstract

This paper discusses a dominant group in local politics of Sumenep that is based on a pesantren network that is usually referred to as the Bani Syarqawi. The author argues that the superiority of religious clerics (kyai) over the mass in Sumenep has been mainly based on their adaptability to the transformational change of their role from traditional-charismatic to rational-authoritative by means of educational excellence and genealogical network that is both powerful and full of conflict. The social significance of the superiority found its way through a social change that enabled the religious elite to be the dominant elite group in Sumenep when the power of their royal counterpart declined rapidly. Equipped with Weberian model of authority, the author argues that the formalistic tendency of elite theory can be balanced with a perspective that elite can develop and exercise power over the mass even they are outside the formal structure of politics.

Abstract

This article offers a brief account of the political turmoil which led to the abdication of President Abdurrahman Wahid. President Wahid faced serious challenges, particularly from his traditional opponents, the Muslim militants. They made efforts to deligitimize his government using street protests, provocative talk shows and writings which enabled them to create political unrest during Wahid’s short-lived government. The Muslim militants eventually thought that Wahid did not deserve political support from the Muslim community due to his controversial views. The political feud between Wahid and the militants actually is not as simple as it appears. The two belong to different “religious schools of thought”; the former represents contextual ways of thought, and the latter supports textual mindsets. While the first opens a space to dialogue between texts and contexts, the latter follows a one-way path, applying literally what has been stated in the prophetic and scriptural texts.

Abstract

This article seeks to shed light on the decrees released by Lajnah Baḥth al-Masā’il Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) on matters pertaining to religious disputes (masā’il alfiqhiyyah). It focuses on two main themes; (1) the definition of what books are categorized as “al-Kutub al-Mu‘tabarah” and (2) the methodological approach used by the Lajnah in the process of deliberation. The assumption developed within this article is that what makes the books fall into the category of “al-Kutub al-Mu‘tabarah” are only those books that employ one of the four school of thought in fiqh. In addition, the methodological approach used in the Lajnah follows the following three patterns: (1) al-Ṭarīqah alqawliyyah (direct reference to those mu‘tabarah books), (2) al-Ṭarīqah al-ilḥāqiyyah (analogy between old and new problems as mentioned within those mu‘tabarah books), (3) al- Ṭarīqah al-manhajiyyah (following the methods of four madhhab imams).
