Abstract

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are the most relevant topic to be discussed in Indonesia because of their significant contribution to the economic development in this country. The important role of SMEs in Indonesia is not only limited as job provider for the vast majority of the people, but also very vital in combating poverty, reducing unemploy¬ment, distributing income, and increasing non-oil export. The role of SMEs becomes even higher along with the emerging of autonomy era and globalization. While SMEs were seen only as job provider in the past, nowadays, SMEs are hoped can give more significant con¬tribution in enhancing non-oil export and provide input for the large-scale industries as sub¬contractor. This study is aimed to understand the dynamics of SMEs in Indonesia between 1999-2001. The analysis in this study will be focused to identify the concentration patterns and the growth of SMEs. The data used in this study are secondary data which were obtained from the Bureau of Statisics. The instruments of analysis employed in this study consist of concentration index and geographic information system. This study found that the growth of SMEs in Indonesia has not been distributed equally across the country. SMEs have been found in a very high concentration in several provinces; meanwhile they are less concen¬trated in the majority of the provinces. Keywords: SMEs, analysis of regional concentration.

Abstract

This research aims to examine the effect of wages differentiation on employments. The policies of wages differentiation are observed from minimum sector wages which is still done in some provinces. The differentiation itself is aimed to exhaust the customer’s surplus. The research shows that the more wages differentiation the more employments will be offer¬ed. But, unfortunately some provinces still set high minimum sector wages. This case will cause negative effect on empowerment, and on the other hand in limited formal manufactur¬ing in¬dustries will reduce the gap of distribution of value added between the employers and the workers. Keywords:  wage differentiation, employment, industry, and region studies

Abstract

This study analyzes Indonesian aggregate imports by using expenditure components approach since Indonesian Economy relies highly on import. The relationship between ag¬gregate imports and the component of final demand expenditure namely public and private consumption expenditure, investment expenditure and export is investigated because the dif¬ferent components of final demand expenditure have different import contents. In addition, the model also includes price of import as a determinant demand for import.Johansen Multivariate co integration is proposed to analyze the import behavior in the long run. To examine response of import to its determinants in the short run, an error correction model is applied. Quarterly data during 1990.1-2003.2 are used for the analysis. The results demonstrate both the components of final demand expenditure and price of im¬port are all important factor in determining aggregate demand for imports not only in the long run but also in the short run. Keywords: Demand for imports, Components of final demand expenditure, Cointegration, Error Correction Model.

Abstract

Since 1970 era, the discussion about fiscal decentralization becomes an important subject. A recent World Bank study found that of the 75 developing and transition countries in the world with populations greater than 5 million, all but 12 claim to be embarked on some transfer of fiscal power from the central to sub national governments. This is a revolu-tion of how people think fiscally. The subject has also attracted many researchers to explore the decentralization system. As such many researchers mainly try to focus that fiscal decen-tralization would have a significant effect on economic growth. Empirically, these research-ers also prove that the decentralization approach of a nation's fiscal structure is an effective strategy to promote economic growth. The central structure of fiscal decentralization is the degree that creates growth-promoting decentralization systems that distinguish decentraliza-tion system capabilities in promoting economic growth to a greater or lesser degree. Hence, this paper will provide the empirical evidence for selected Muslim countries where these countries adopt the differences approaches in fiscal decentralization, i.e., transition coun-tries versus countries with a well-functioning fiscal system. Abstract

Production of broiler chicken at Yogyakarta Province exceeds its consumption so that Yogyakarta province becomes one of suppliers of chicken for other regions, especially Jakarta. The objective of this research is to formulate distribution channel of broiler chicken, to determine transmission price elasticity and to estimate margin among distribution chan¬nels. The results show that pattern of production system consists of non-cooperative sys¬tem and cooperative (nucleus-core) system. Distribution channel of the non-cooperative system is more various than of that nucleus-core system. The margin of former system is also more efficient but more risky. Finally, producers are less responsive to price changes than distributors. Keywords: broiler chickens, distribusion channels, nucleus core system.
