Abstract

A provenance trial of suren (Toona sinensis Roem) is aimed to obeserve the best provenance in adaptation and growth traits. This provenance is used as seed sources for forest rehabilitation in the area of development. Eleven provenances of suren from Sumatera Island was established in Candiroto, Temanggung, Central Java. The plot was designed in a Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) comprised of three replicates, 11 provenances and 9 trees per plot with spacing of 3m x 3m. This study showed that tree height, diameter and volume were significant different among provenances at 4 and 5 years age, while significant for survival at 5 years age. Tree height, diameter and volume showed significant and positive correlation with each other. Broad sense heritability  value were found fairly good for all traits. Pasaman (West Sumatera) provenance is recommended to be the best seed sourced for plantation under similar site conditions and also genetic improvement programme.

Abstract

Forty four clones of Acacia hybrid  propagated from selected stoolplants were tested together with a control of pure species seedling and clone in a clonal test established at Wonogiri, Central Java. The design of clonal test was Incomplete Block Design, which was laid-out as single treeplot of 20 replications with spacing of 3 m x 3 m. Measurements of tree height were conducted at age 12 months. There were significant differences between the clones in height growth. Eleven clones of 44 were more superior than the original population at SSO F1 (Control 4th) which superiority ranging from 1.81-35.35 % and 3 of them were more superior than the pure species (control 1th, control 2th and control 3th) which superiority ranging from 3.51 – 17.28%. Meanhile, clone repeatability for height at age 12 months was, while individual repeatability for height was 0.59 +- 0.1

Abstract

Information on genetic relationship amongst teak (Tectona grandis Linn.f) populations in Indonesia is important, in order to maintain the high genetic diversity of the species and to ensure the origin of commercial planting materials. In this study, 94 loci from 25 RAPD primers were used for analyzing genetic diversity and genetic relationship among 30 populations of teak which collected from provenance trial in Bojonegoro and its populations in Sulawesi. Mean genetic diversity (h) of the 30 populations was 0.184, and mean genetic distance between populations (D) was 0.441. Based on cluster analysis, 30 populations of teak were divided into 3 groups. The first group consisted of Burma, the second group consisted of Jawa, India, Indochina and Thailand populations, and the third group consisted of all  populations in Sulawesi. High genetic distance between Jawa’s and Sulawesi’s populations can be used to  differentiate seed/seedling from both regions.

Abstract

This study was conducted to observe growth variation and genetic parameters of progeny test of teak (Tectona grandis Linn. F) in Gunung Kidul at 5 years of age. The progeny test of teak was laid-out in a randomized complete block design consisting of 120 families, 6 blocks, 3 tree-plots. Measurement was conducted annually for traits tree height, dbh, stem straightness, branching type and individual tree volume. The results of study showed that the mean of survival rate reached 84.72%, which was varied from 55.56 to 100%. Among tested families and populations, all measurement traits showed significant differences. The average of growth traits werw 5.86 m for tree height, 5.69 cm for dbh and 0.015 m3 for individual stem volume. In case of form traits, the average were 2.12 for stem straightness and 1.90 for branching type. Estimated family heritability were 0.166 for tree height, for dbh, 0.245 for stem straightness, 0.140 for the branching type and  0.289 for individual  stem volume.

Abstract

Merbau is one of threatened forest genetic resources. Based on IUCN Red List Categories. conservation status of merbau is vulnerable (VU A1cd). Conservation effort of merbau is urgently required to save this species from extinction. Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Yogyakarta had established ex situ conservation plots of merbau in Forest Research in Bondowoso, East Java and Gunung Kidul Yogyakarta. Genetic resources used in those ex situ conservation plots were from seven provenances namely Halmahera Timur, Waigo, Oransbari, Wasior, Nabire, Seram, dan Mandopi/Twanwawi. This research aims to evaluate adaptability, growth and regeneration of merbau plants grown in ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso dan Gunung Kidul. The ex situ conservation plot in Bondowoso was designed as Randomized Complete Block Design with single factor of provenance. At the ex situ conservation plot in Gunung Kidul each provenance was planted in one block. The results showed that adaptability of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso dan Gunung Kidul was good. Growth of height and diameter of merbau plants from several provenances at ex situ conservation plot in Gunung Kidul were better than those in Bondowoso at all observation ages. Height and diameter average of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso and Gunung Kidul at one year old were 78.21 cm; 9.58 mm and 97.88 cm; 9.58 mm respectively. Height and diameter average of merbau plants at ex situ conservation plots in Bondowoso and Gunung Kidul at two years old were 95.36 cm; 12.95 mm and cm; 19.62 mm respectively. Regeneration of merbau has been successful at Gunung Kidul  plot. Some of the fallen seeds were then grown  to be wildlings. Whereas, regeneration of merbau at  ex situ conservation plot in Bondowoso was regarded as not successful
