Abstract

Keywords: cohesion, cohesive device, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion This research is about the analysis of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices used in classification essays made by the fourth semester students of English Study Program at Brawijaya University by using Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) and Renkema’s (2004) theories on English cohesion. There are three objectives in this research, namely: (1) to find out the types of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices used in the classification essays; (2) to find out the frequency of grammatical and lexical cohesive devices used in the classification essays, and (3) to investigate the reference units made in the classification essays.This study uses both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative approach is used to measure the frequency of the grammatical and lexical cohesive devices used in the classification essays. While, qualitative approach isused to describe in detail about the analysis of the grammatical and lexical cohesive devices found in the classification essays. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied in this study to analyze five classification essays written by the fourth semester students of English Study Program in Brawijaya University.This study reveals that the grammatical cohesive devices used in students’ classification essays are reference (personal, demonstrative and comparative),conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal and other conjunction), verbsubstitution, nominal ellipsis and clausal ellipsis. In addition, the lexical cohesive devices used in the students’ classification essays are the same word repetition, synonymy, hyponymy, superordinate, antonymy, general word and collocation. In terms of frequency, the most frequently used grammatical cohesive device is personal reference, counted 59 or 23.01%, and the most frequently used lexical cohesive device is the same word repetition, which is 221 or 78.93%. After all, the use of both grammatical and lexical cohesion is to maintain the coherence of the facts and ideas in the essays.The writer suggests that English learners should learn more about how cohesive devices are used correctly and effectively. Besides, for the lecturers, they can use this study as the enrichment in Discourse Analysis material. Also, she suggests for the next researcher to conduct similar study, but using another form of essays or broaden the scope of the analysis.

Abstract

Kata Kunci : Sintaksis, Keterangan Waktu, Analisis KesalahanSintaksis adalah bidang linguistik. Sintaksis membahas seperti frasa, klausa  serta  kalimat.   Analisis  dalam penelitian  ini  menggunakan keterangan waktu jiù(就),cái (才), gāng gāng (刚刚), tū rán (突然), yǐ jing(已 经 )  yang  diterapkan  dalam  karangan  dengan  tema  perjalanan.  Pada umumnya, kesalahan yang terjadi adalah kesalahan penggunaan keterangan waktu yang tidak tepat.  Hal  ini  disebabkan karena mahasiswa belum memahami akan penggunaan keterangan waktu tersebut yang pengertiannya hampir sama. Peneliti merasa tertarik untuk membahas keterangan waktu jiù(就),cái (才), gang gang (刚刚), tū rán (突然), yǐ jing(已经)dan digunakan untuk menjawab rumusan serta  tujuan masalah yaitu kesalahan penggunaan dan struktur  dalam keterangan waktu tersebut.Penelitian ini menggunakan deskriptif kuantitatif, analisis data berupa angka.  Dari  hasil  penelitian  dapat  disimpulkan bahwa mayoritas mahasiswa semester III dikategorikan dalam golongan sangat mampu.Peneliti menyarankan agar penelitian selanjutnya tetap menggunakan objek yaitu mahasiswa dengan konsep tata bahasa yang berbeda, sehingga penjelasan serta  penelitian tentang tata bahasa lebih beragam.

Abstract

Keywords : Contrastive Analysis, Sumimasen and Nuwun Sewu Expressions. Human as social creature need language as communication device. Communication device in every single countries are different, but every singlelanguages definitely has difference and similarit y like grammar in Javaneselanguage and Japanese language, for the example comparison of Sumimasenexpression in Japanese language with Nuwun Sewu expression in Javaneselanguage which become writer’s theme of the thesis. This research use the reference of Sutedi theory for examine the difference and similarit y which exist in two languages or more. The method which used at this research is descriptive qualitative. From analysis of data which already obtained from this research, Sumimasen and Nuwun Sewu has the same meaning, “permission” and “pardon”. Sumimasen can have meaning “thank you”, NuwunSewu can’t. Sumimasen has past form, while Nuwun Sewu hasn’t. The meaning of “pardon” which be contained in Sumimasen is more deeper than Nuwun Sewu.Both of Sumimasen and Nuwun Sewu are interjection (kandoushi). At the next research, it will be a good idea if the examine about contrastive analysis is more deeper than before, not only examine the kind of pardon but also examine the kind of honor in Japanese language and Javanese language, in order to keep local culture can’t be forgotten.

Abstract

Keywords: language learning strategies, students in TOEFL preparation, Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaireEnglish has become a common requirement in academic and work fields. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is designed to measure English proficiency, such as the abilities to use and understand English. Before taking the TOEFL test, many test takers are recommended to take some preparation by doing some TOEFL exercise or participating in TOEFL class preparation. In taking the TOEFL preparation class learners need effective learning strategies to get the expected TOEFL score. By applying the strategies, the learning process will be more effective. This study is aimed at examining the language learning strategies applied by the students of TOEFL preparation class at LBPP LIA Malang, and the correlation between the application of language learning strategies and TOEFL score.This study used descriptive quantitative approach and survey related to correlation study. The subjects of this study were 37 students of TOEFL preparation class at LBPP Lia Malang taken by quota sampling. The data weretaken from Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL) questionnaire completed by the students and their TOEFL score at the end of the level.The results show that the use of overall language learning strategies falls into medium level, meaning that the students sometimes used those strategies. Inparticular, metacognitive strategies are found as the most frequently used strategies, followed by compensation, social, affective, cognitive, and memorystrategies. In addition, there is a positive sufficient significant correlation amongmetacognitive and cognitive strategies and TOEFL score. The possible reason ofsufficient correlation is caused by the context of English use since English isconsidered as a foreign language in Indonesia.In suggestion, it is expected that the learners improve their English proficiency by using appropriate learning strategies and the teachers can introduce and emphasize the application of language learning strategies to the students,especially metacognitive and cognitive strategies.

Abstract

Keywords: Language Function, New Moon, Discourse, Discourse Analysis.This study is about “Language Function Used by Bella Swan the Main Character of New Moon Movie”. The writer used movie as the subject of this study. There are two research problems in this study, namely: (1) What are the language functions used by Bella Swan as the main character of “New Moon movie”, (2) What is the most dominant types of language functions and the reason of using a certain type of language function used by Bella Swan as the main character of “New Moon movie”. The writer used the theory of Roman Jacobson to analysis the language function contained in this movie.This study uses qualitative approach by using document analysis to analyze the data. The data source of this study is the subtitle of “New Moon movie”. Whereas, the data of this study is Bella Swan utterances which contain language function that exist in “New Moon movie”.In this study, the writer found 173 utterances containing language function produced by Bella Swan which consist of 51 emotive functions, 30 conativefunctions, 14 phatic functions, 43 referential functions, and 34 metalinguisticfunctions, and there is no poetic function used by Bella Swan in this movie.The language function mostly used by Bella Swan as the main character in New Moon movie is emotive function which is used 51 times. The writer suggeststhe English learners of English Department as well as for further researchers whoare interested in making thesis about discourse analysis especially languagefunction use other objects and theories for their further research.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Fukugoudoushi, Majalah Bahasa merupakan alat komunikasi verbal dan digunakan sebagai alat untuk saling berkomunikasi antarindividu atau kelompok. Dalam linguistik bahasa Jepang terdapat verba majemuk atau fukugoudoushi, salah satunya adalahfukugoudoushi ~komu. Penelitian ini menjawab dua rumusan masalah yaitu (1)Jenis verba apakah yang dapat bergabung dengan verba ~komu sehinggamembentuk fukugoudoushi ~komu? (2) Bagaimana makna verba yangdimunculkan dari fukugoudoushi setelah dikonjugasikan dengan verba ~komu?Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data yangdigunakan adalah kalimat yang mengandung fukugoudoushi ~komu yang terdapat dalam majalah Nikkei Business tahun 2009. Analisis yang digunakan adalah dengan melakukan klasifikasi berdasarkan makna yang dimunculkan, tabulasi dan analisis data.Dari hasil analisis pada penelitian ini ditemukan 50 fukugoudoushi ~komu dengan rincian 49 kata berupa verba +komu dan 1 kata berupa nomina +komu. Fukugoudoushi ~komu dengan susunan morfem kosong +komu tidak ditemukan. Kemudian pada makna perpindahan ke dalam, 32 kata bermakna masuk ke dalam ruang tertutup, 4 kata bermakna masuk ke dalam benda padat, 3 kata bermakna masuk ke dalam benda cair, 3 kata bermakna masuk ke dalam benda bercelah, 3 kata bermakna mengelilingi suatu benda, 2 kata bermakna menyusut sendiri, 2 kata bermakna lainnya yang tidak termasuk dalam 6 makna yang telah disebutkan sebelumnya. Lalu pada makna tingkat perkembangan, 1 kata bermakna tingkatan tetap, 1 kata bermakna tingkatan penyangatan, dan 4 kata bermakna perbuatan yang dilakukan secara berulang-ulang.Penelitian selanjutnya dapat dilakukan dengan meneliti makna gramatikalmaupun pola hubungan makna komponen pembentuk menggunakanfukugoudoushi lain seperti fukugoudoushi ~dasu, ~agaru, ~au, ~iru dan lainsebagainya dengan sumber data berupa wacana bahasa Jepang seperti majalah, koran, novel, maupun dorama.

Keywords: Politeness Strategies, the Main Character, Black Swan MovieLanguage has a crucial role in a human life’s communication since it functions as a media tool to make interaction. One way to establish a meaningful conversation in society is by applying politeness. Behaving politely does notmerely depend on how good a member in a society is, but also how to behavepolitely in daily conversation. This study is about politeness strategies used by Nina as the main character in Black Swan movie. The problems of the study are (1) what are the types of politeness strategies, and (2) what is the most frequent politeness strategy used by Nina in Black Swan movie.This study used a qualitative approach specifically using document analysis. The writer analyzed the utterances of Nina as the main character taken from the script of Black Swan movie and the writer also adopted politeness strategy’s theory proposed by Brown & Levinson (1987).The study reveals that Nina performs all kinds of politeness strategies inconversation, they are positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy,bald-on record strategy, and off-record strategy. There are 78 utterances of Ninawhich contain politeness strategy. Positive politeness strategy is the most frequently used by Nina for 47 times with the percentage 60%. The second is baldon record strategy for 12 times (15%), the third is negative politenessstrategy for 10 times (13%), and followed by off-record strategy for 9 times (12%). Nina mostly used positive politeness strategy to show cooperation and also to maintain her close relationship with the other characters.Further study about politeness can be conducted by adding politenessstrategy theory proposed by other expert like Leech (1983) to create a deeperanalysis. The writer also suggests next researcher use another literary works such as novel, short stories, and talk show.

Abstract

Kata Kunci : Idiom, Kanyouku, Analisis Kontrastif.Bahasa sebagai sarana komunikasi yang sangat penting dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. Namun dari percakapan maupun teks terkesan janggal dan lucudikarenakan terdapat idiom dalam percakapan maupun teks tersebut. Sehinggapembelajar masih sering menemukan adanya kesulitan dalam penggunaan idiom atau kanyouku dikarenakan kurangnya pemahaman tentang idiom.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui perbandingan idiom yang menggunakan kata ‘mulut’ dalam bahasa Jepang dan bahasa Indonesia sehingga akan diketahui persamaan dan perbedaan unsur kata idiom. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif. Data yang digunakan diperoleh dari beberapa kamus idiom bahasa Jepang dan bahasa Indonesia.Kesimpulan yang diperoleh, yaitu (1) Sebagian besar idiom bahasa Jepangdan bahasa Indonesia yang menggunakan kata ‘mulut’ terbentuk dari idiom verba. (2) terdapat idiom ‘kuchi’ yang terbentuk dari unsur pembentuk kata yang sama dan bermakna leksikal sama dengan idiom ‘mulut’. (3) terdapat idiom ‘kuchi’ yang terbentuk dari unsur pembentuk kata yang berbeda namun bermakna sama dengan idiom ‘mulut’. (4) terdapat idiom yang terbentuk dari unsur pembentuk kata dan memiliki makna idiom yang sama dengan idiom ‘mulut’ sehingga dapat diterjemahkan langsung kedalam bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: novel, Tuhan, agama, genzeriyaku, raiseriyakuPada masyarakat modern Jepang agama mulai dijadikan sebagai sesuatu untuk mengatasi stres dalam kehidupan. Hingga kemudian di Jepang dikenal dengan konsep mencari keuntungan dengan beragama. Kentungan tersebut meliputi keuntungan dunia maupun setelah kematian, yang disebut dengan genzeriyaku dan raiseriyaku. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan novel berjudul Sakura sebagai bahan analisis. Meskipun novel Sakura memiliki tema cerita tentang kehidupan sebuah keluaraga yang mencoba untuk mengatasi masalah-masalahnya, namun di dalamnya terdapat pula nilai-nilai agama khususnya tentang pemahaman Tuhan. Pemahaman tersebut terjadi pada beberapa tokoh yang dipengaruhi oleh dua konsep keuntungan beragama tersebut, oleh karena itulah pada penelitian ini penulis akan mengangkat permasalahan berupa, Bagaimana gambaran Tuhan yang tercermin dalam novel Sakura ditinjau dari konsep genzeriyaku dan raiseriyaku. Untuk proses analisis penulis menggunakan metode analisis isi yang dilakukan secara kualitatif dengan menganalisis kata ataupun paragraf dalam novel.Kemudian untuk menemukan seperti apa gambaran Tuhan yang ada dalam novel Sakura, digunakan dua konsep keuntungan beragama yang telah disebutkan di atas. Hal itu dilakukan dengan menganalisis seperti apa genzeriyaku dan raiseriyaku yang terdapat pada beberapa tokoh melalui kutipan-kutipan pada teks novel. Serta digunakan pula konsep ma no jiko sebagai konsep pendukung.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa dalam novel Sakura terdapat konsep genzeriyaku dan raiseriyaku yang ditemukan pada beberapa tokoh. Tokoh Aniterdapat genzeriyaku dan raiseriyaku, tokoh kakek tua dan Boku terdapatgenzeriyaku, kemudian tokoh Feraari terdapat raiseriyaku. Menggunakan penemuan tersebut kemudian didapati dua bentuk penggambaran Tuhan, yaituTuhan sebagai penguasa terhadap manusia dan Tuhan dalam diri manusia.  Penulis menyarankan agar peneliti selanjutnya dapat meneliti seperti apa konsep keuntungan beragama ini memberi pengaruh terhadap psikologis paratokoh pada novel Sakura. Harapannya penelitian ini dapat membantu pembelajar bahasa dan budaya Jepang dalam memahami seperti apa pandangan masyarakat Jepang khususnya mengenai kehidupan beragama dan bertuhan.

Abstract

Keywords: Language functions, Twilight MovieLanguage is not only used to express intent of heart and mind to others, but also to deliver message from the addresser to the addressee. Therefore, language has some functions, such as emotive, directive, phatic, poetic, metalinguistic, referential, and contextual function. In this study, the writer examines  the language functions used by the main characters in Twilight movieto know the language functions used and types of the language functions that are mostly found in Twilight movie.This study uses qualitative approach to examine the language functions used in the main characters’ utterances in Twilight movie and their analysis. The data of this study are the utterances transcript of the main characters in Twilight movie containing language functios. After classifying the utterances into types of language functions, the writer gives the implementation of them.The results show that there are five language functions out of seven language functions found in the utterances of the main characters of Twilight movie. They are emotive function, directive function, phatic function, and referential function. From fifty utterances, the writer finds 21 referential function, 17 phatic function, 7 emotive function, 12 directive function, and 8 poetic function. Referential function is the mostly used language function since many utterances produced by the addresser give information to the addressee. The second language function that is mostly used is phatic function because when the addresser wants to know something, she/he has to open a conversation with others. The third language function used by the main characters is emotive function, since they often express their emotion to response the addressee. The other language function used by the main characters is directive function since the addresser orders the addressee to do something. Another language function used by the main characters is poetic function because the addresser gives information to the addressee by focusing on the real meaning of the message.The writer gives some suggestions to the next writer who wants to do further research. Firstly, it is suggested to the next writers to examine the order part of language functions. Secondly, the writer would like to suggest the next writer to examine language functions in other media such as novel, daily conversation, etc.
