Abstract

This study focuses on Hasyim Asy’ari’s religious thinking. It particularly examines three key issues, Hasyim’s responses to religious dynamics in the early twentieth century, the correlation between his ideas and the religious tradition or thinking of the ulama’ in the medieval period, and the extent to which he presented the originality, trend, and uniqueness of his ideas on the discourse of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ‘ah. Basing its analysis on the historical understanding of religion and philosophy, the study also makes use of hermeneutics, and seeks to grasp the deep meaning of the text by considering carefully its horizons. The findings of this study imply that Hasyim crafted a new concept of Sunnism, which can be particularly called “particular Sunnism”. By this we mean a discursive understanding of the concept of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamâ‘ah according to the context of locality, the religious dynamics that shape it as well as the existing interpretation on it that has been taken by the likes of the modernists and traditionalists in Indonesia in the early twentieth century.

Abstract

The main problem that this paper is interested in dealing with is the notion of taqlid, the English translation of which being a blind acceptance. Taqlid is the opposite of Ijtihad, the intellectual exercise to draw certain legal rules from their sources. Muslims over centuries believed that taqlid in legal matters is not allowed, and that the door of Ijtihad has never been closed, as some Western scholars would emphatically argue. The paper nonetheless maintains that taqlid does take place in a major part of Islamic legal history. It has become unavoidable for Muslims to accept blindly –due to some reasons- the legal views of the earlier scholars and jurists. But the paper also argues that to accept without question the views of the authoritative scholars in legal matters is not always bad. The paper tries to show that there are –due to some conditions- positive things in committing Taqlid. To show this, the paper would attempt to scrutinize the historical facts in which Muslims do benefit from doing Taqlid. It means also that, Ijtihad is not always good for Muslims. By presenting some findings -the paper will argue- that in some cases, Muslims should abandon independent intellectual exercise and resort to blind acceptance if in doing so would bring benefit for them.

Abstract

The relation of Islam as a religion and the notion of human right has attracted a lot of attention both from the activists and the academics. One of the academics that has paid a good deal of attention to this issue is an Egyptian scholar named Fathi Osman. This paper is dedicated to explore his ideas, suggestions and conceptions on the issue at hand. It contends that Osman is mainly concerned with the synthesis of Islamic concept and the notion of human right adopted by the international community. The paper exposes Osman’s strategies in pursuing the synthesis, which begins by careful investigation on both Islamic and modern concepts of human right, then followed by identifying the strength and weakness of each concept. This strategy is aimed at gaining a clear idea about how a new concept of human right should be formulated. The paper will also ask whether Osman’s synthesis is both practical and conceptual. By practical, we mean a concept which rooted in the real experiences as far as human rights are concerned. And by conceptual, we mean whether Osman’s ideas are derived from the theoretical analysis of both Islamic sources and the sources of modern idea on human rights.

Abstract

This article is about a critical study of the thematic method of the Qur’an. It studies the nature of the method and provides a critical assessment of it. One of the gaps that the study will try to fill in is the lack of attention being given to the context out of which any particular text was revealed. The thematic approach is not particularly good at looking at the backgrounds of the text. It is this shortcoming that the paper will try to evaluate critically. It argues that the task of any interpreter of a text has been to understand first and foremost the surroundings that shape the text and constitute part and parcel of it. This understanding would determine the nature of the text and help guide the interpreter in the process of interpretation. The meaning of a text can change according to its context. The same word can infer to a different subject also according to the context. The paper will further elaborate this point further so as to give a clear idea that a thematic approach cannot ignore this aspect of exegesis.

Abstract

This paper understands that the Sharî‘ah Economics is a serious contender for the modern global capitalistic economic system. Capitalism has been responsible for the collapse of not only the global economic system but also the moral deterioration of human being. Injustice is the main mark of capitalism. Hence, in a capitalistic society, no law of the game is upheld economically speaking. The strong and the rich rule. The weak is always a victim. This is the main concern of this paper, vis-à-vis which it introduces the Sharî‘ah perspective as providing a good alternative. The paper first speaks of the sources of this “Islamic” system -namely the Qur’an, the Sunna, Ijma and Qiyas- and then delves into its heart, namely justice. The study holds that the main imprint ot Syari’ ah economic system is justice. Being divinely revealed, this system is always in line with the very nature of man as a social being whose responsibility it is to do something beneficial for his fellow human being. Man is not created solely to accumulate wealth, but to serve God, his religion, his community by using wealth among others. Hence, wealth is not the goal, but the means. The goal that every man wants to acquire is happiness. Sharî‘ah Economics–the paper argues- is ordained to provide a practical guideline toward happiness.

Abstract

Many have been done to study the problem of Sharî‘ah and other related issues. But little has been done to investigate the notion of the application of Sharî‘ah in Indonesia in the form of regional law, otherwise known as Perda Sharî‘ah. Apart from its importance and sensitivity, the Perda Sharî‘ah is quite ignored by the academic circle in this country. It is toward filling this gap that this paper is written. It is interested first in discussing the nature of Syariah, its values, history, and sources. Then it moves to the currents of thought and modes of interpretation as far as Sharî‘ah is concerned. It finally discusses the ways Sharî‘ah is applied in daily live and how a country like Indonesia –or rather certain districts in it- are involved in formalizing Sharî‘ah as their regional law. The main argument of this paper is that, Islam is not solely about law. Islam is a religion of ethics, morality, belief, and spirituality. Islam is also a way of life, the consequence of which being that it should be comprehended universally as comprehensive system of living. Hence, we argue, that the application of Islam in the form of regional law would mean a simplification of the more universal form of Islam, and a reduction of the more holistic message of the religion.

Abstract

Hadith, a prophetic saying has been a living tradition for the Muslims. In their plea to live a better live, Muslims would turn to either the Qur’an or the hadith. It has in other words served as a source for all aspects of the lives of Muslims. As an object of academic study, hadith has also been subjected into a serious investigation both to prove its authenticity in its narration and message, and to elaborate certain points of importance. Critical studies of hadith have been common in academic circles in the Muslim world and in the Western universities, one of which focuses on the contextual meaning of it. It is toward this end that this paper is aimed at. It is an attempt to make a contribution in the contextual analysis of hadith. By contextual analysis we mean a study that puts a lot of stressing on the meaning of a hadith by looking at the context from which it was said or reported. This way of studying hadith would help to understand it better in line with the dynamic nature of Islam. The paper argues that a hadith cannot be understood in isolation from its context. It also maintains that understanding its context would mean that one would be able to unveil and even reconstruct the hadith epistemology. Since the epistemology of a hadith lies in its meaning, the re-interpretation of a hadith according to its context would mean rediscovering the new dimension of the epistemology.

Abstract

This paper explores the universal principles of Islamic propagation (da’wah) according to the holy Qur’an. In doing this, the paper employs the thematic approach by collecting the Qur’anic verses that speak of da’wah, and interpret them analytically. Specific attention will be given to the verses that are rooted in the Arabic word da’a, which means “to call”, and balagha, which means “to convey”. Other verses that have to do with the activity of da’wah will be touched briefly. The paper argues that the concepts of “calling” and “conveying” constitute the most important and central notion of da’wah in Islam. Together the two represent the holistic Islamic idea of not only spreading out Islam, but also of building a community based on religiosity. Islamic concept of da’wah is universal because it targets not only Muslim but also all human being based on understanding, tolerance and harmony.

Abstract

This paper deals with a cultural fraction of the Javanese Muslim called Islam Mataraman. Historically Islam Mataraman originated from the Islam that flourished during the era of the Mataram Kingdom in an inland Javanese island. This paper tries to explore the unique characters of this group of the Javanese Muslims that distinguish them from others culturally and politically. It maintains that Islam Mataraman is not only about culture, politics or belief, but also about the integration between them all. Integration is the key word in this paper. The paper also tries to show that in integration process, religion is not always the key player. In fact we are not interested in discussing the winner and the looser in this process. We are rather interested in showing that the integration is unique and complicated process, and that Islam in this part of Java is a perfect model of how religion, culture and politics can converge without there being a sense of domination or marginalization. To carry out its task, the paper will consult not only the local authoritative scholars in this field, but also the international experts so as to have a balanced view of the problem. At the end, we will also try to discuss how this integration imply on the political attitudes of the Muslim Mataraman.

Abstract

The paper discusess the idea of Hijrah and its historic role in the process of Islamic propagation (da’wah). Hijrah is a physical migration from Mekkah to Medinah; a migration that has implied both religious and spiritual transofrmation. In its literal meaning, Hijrah is simply to move from one place to another. In the history of da’wah, Hijrah is a moment in which Islam underwent a process of change and transition from one situation into another. Hijrah was the first stepping stone toward the more vibrant and active propagation of Islam. The paper deals with this notion of Hijrah as the strategic move toward the successful mission of disseminating Islam. These issues together with the many implications that Hijrah has will be the focus of this paper. The paper argues that Hijrah is not simply to make a physical movement from one place to another. It is also about the spiritual and religious transformation of the Muslim ummah. Through Hijrah a new social, political and cultural order is resurrected. To make our discussion more lively, the paper will refer to many Qur’anic verses and prophetic traditions that speak of Hijrah and interpret them in the light of the historic Hijrah. Hence, we look at Hijrah as not only an event in history, but also a norm of religion that has a spiritual value of its own.
