Abstract

This study attempts to review the religious life of multicultural society of Muslim-Hindus in Denpasar, Bali. Findings of the fieldwork reveal the prevalence of an ideal cooperation among religous communities in building harmony in religious life. This character constitutes an integral part of Balinese societal life. Building Bali Aga (Bali Sprouts Again) needs a long process and time through theological, ideological and socio-cultural dialectics. The local government and social institutions together with Balinese society have been struggling to maintain and protect the Hindu-inspired Balinese culture through preserving the tradition of menyama braya to establish a harmonious religious life. They also exhibit inclusive religiousity in social, cultural, economic, and educational spheres. It is with this openness that Muslim-Hindu community in Bali can live in a peaceful co-exisentence and respect each other.

Abstract

In general, Muslim responses to democracy are threefold. The first is the Muslim group which accepts without reserve the concept of democracy. This group appreciates the discourse of democracy as such without any criticism. The second is the Muslim group which accepts democracy with criticism. This group tries to elaborate democracy which is in line with culture, tradition and religion in a particular country. This group rejects to be dictated by the Western model of democracy. The third is the Muslim group which rejects democracy. This group regards democracy as the source of evil and crimes. One that belongs to the third group is Hizbut-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). According to HTI, democracy is evil, incompatible with Islam. For this reason, this articles focuses on, first, the factors which lead HTI to reject democracy; second, the reason or Islamic legal construct developed by HTI to reject democracy; and third, religious mardomsalari (religious democracy) practiced in the Islamic Republic of Iran. This study is a qualitative research based on the study of texts.

Abstract

This article tries to analyze the revival of mystical order (tarekat) in urban areas. Experiences reveal that the development of mystical orders in the Muslim world is not free from criticism, either from the insiders or the outsiders. However, mystical orders still exist, and this fact is characterized by the development of different mystical groups in various cities. Political, social and economic factors influence the fluctuation of mystical orders. This article argues that in a number of countries and in Indonesia, the mystical orders have contributed significantly to the socio-religious life of Muslims. The mystical orders become stronger as they are supported by the involvement of middle class group, media publication, and internal strength embedded in the very tradition of mystical orders. The influx of middle class Muslims to the networks of tarekat brings the fresh wind of change since their engagement provides the internal dynamic of tarekat which encounters external influences on the one hand, and the continuing drive to develop on the other.

Abstract

In principle, the Salafi-Islam attempts to call for genuine Islamic teaching as practiced during the period of the Prophet. Salafi-Islam came to Indonesia in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, then spread to different places in the Archipelago. In Larangan, Pamekasan, the spread of Salafi-Islam is still in its nascent stage, from person-to-person, and appears as a small phenomenon in the midst of predominantly mainstream Islam. Salafi teachings spread through different forms of communication media (radios, televisions, magazines, and books) and religious practices of its ?proponents. The movement manifests itself in the pratices of rituals, not in politics. The implication of encounter between salafi-Islam and NU as the mainstream religious group in Pamekasan is as follows: (1) religous life in Pamekasan becomes more dynamic; (2) there emerges inward-looking attitude at their own religous practices as well as outward-looking attitude to the others. This phenomenon can be observed among more educated members of the society. Among the common people, however, there are two types of attitude: ignorance and negative reaction; and (3) an attempt to search for the common ground and dialogue among different religious communities is being conducted.

Abstract

This article analyzes the epistemology of healing developed by kiai-traditional healer. In the Indonesian-Islamic tradition of healing, the kiai-traditional healer develops his own epistemological construct of healing, based on: (1) textual basis (bay?n?) referring to classical Islamic references, such as al-Awf?q and Shams al-Ma??rif; (2) intuitive power (?irf?n?) in the form of mystical practices, such as spiritual endeavor (muj?hadah), tawajjuh, self-cleansing (tazk?yat al-nafs), wara?, consistency (istiq?mah), and forbearance (?abr); and (3) pragmatic basis of the truth, particularly its utility value for the society. Normatively, the kiai-traditional healer uses different media of healing in terms of its easiness, belief or charm. Accordingly, it results in an impression that there are many modes of healing, i.e., medical, magical, mystical, and cosmic. The meaning of healing by the kiai-traditional healer constitutes a placebo effect of well-being, that is, an attempt of the kiai to implant evocation to recover the condition of human being.

Abstract

Dangding as a literary work is only meaningful when chanted. When one just reads in his/her mind silently, dangding becomes dry and lacks of meaning. This paper discusses the position of Mustapa?s dangding in literary context and their relevance to contemporary Sundanese discourse. The main focus of this study is the character of his mystical verses, structural aspects of dangding as a Sufism vessel, and to examine any discrepancy of meaning in reading process on his dangding for Sundanese literary today. Cultural studies approach is used to analyze the meaningfulness of his works in the current widespread popular cultural challenges. The study finds that with the decline of dangding tradition, Mustapa?s works receive a great deal of challenges seen from the development of modern literary: the influence of Indonesian literature (short stories, novels, etc.) to the Sundanese literary; dangding becomes marginalized along with the loss of many cultural institutions where it is appreciated; and the problem of meaning discrepancies on reading it in popular culture, which is dominated by massively printed works that lost the meaning behind words and melody. It is difficult for it to compete in popular cultural hegemony that relies on uniformity, profit-oriented and passive consumer.

Abstract

This article discusses the reconstruction of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) with regard to vaginal bleeding using a medical approach. The fiqh of vaginal bleeding discusses menstruation, postpartum, and isti???ah. The discussion of fiqh is normative in nature, as it is based on the Qur??n and Had?th. Technological developments in medical science affect the deconstruction of fiqh pertaining to vaginal bleeding. As a resut, the opinions of previous jurists become less relevant, and the fiqh of vaginal bleeding needs to be reconstructed accordingly. This reconstruction can be conducted by using the empirical-normative approach to the study of fiqh with regard tovaginal bleeding, redefining the fiqh of vaginal bleeding, reinterpreting the argument of fiqh concerning vaginal bleeding, and making medical experts as partners in determining vaginal bleeding.

Abstract

The verse Lâ Ikrâh fî al-Dîn has been one of the most contested verses with regard to its meaning and definition by the ulama (religious scholars) from the past to the present. Basing on this verse, progressive ulama maintain that the idea of freedom of religion introduced by modern society does not contradict the Qurân. For them, freedom of religion includes not only freedom to convert to Islam, but also freedom to convert from Islam. This view is rejected by conservative ulama who argue that the meaning of the verse contains only freedom to convert to Islam, not to convert from Islam. If non-Muslims are free to convert to Islam, Muslims are not allowed to convert from Islam. Moreover, there are many ulama who argue that the verse has been abrogated by other tens of verses which enjoin to fight against infidels and polytheists. After the revelation of verses of war? in the Qurân, the verse Lâ Ikrâh fî al-Dîn becomes no longer legally binding.

Abstract

This research focuses on the problem of information technology-based teaching activities by teachers of Islamic education in the regent of Sidoarjo. The research concludes that the learning activity on the subject of Islamic education is very much conventional where teachers play the major role in acquiring knowledge, while students were not involved. The research also discovers that teachers do have good teaching qualifications given that they meet 12 out of 16 competences criterion set by the national standard authority on the subject. But they on the other hand, are weak in terms of pedagogic qualification considering that they meet only 12 to 17 out of 42 competences. The research finds that the ability and skill of the teachers in using technology such as computer, laptop, LCD and internet are among the main factors behind their competencies. Teachers of SMAN 1 in Krian, and SMKN 2 in Buduran are among those who are familiar with the information technology system. Meanwhile, the poor infrastructure and limited availability of information technology in such schools as SMAN in Tarik, SMAN 2 in Sidoarjo and Porong are the main factors that hamper the process of developing the teaching standard.

Abstract

Similar to any theological sect, the Kharijite has split into many smaller groups. Usually all these groups were characterized as extreme factions who used violence in the pursuit of their purposes. However, the factual evidence proved that there was Ibadite which was considered as the most moderate group. The Ibadites tend to avoid? extreme behaviour. Due to their moderation, they successively ascended to power. The example of their remarkable achievement was the Rustamid Dynasty in Maghreb from 160-296H (776-909AD). As far as the research is concerned, unfortunately, there is no comprehensive records on the Rustamid accomplishment. The Rustamids reigned their plural society with different backgrounds in ethnicity, nationality, and religion. By doing so, the Rustamids could generate harmonious life in the entire territory under their government. Besides, the Rustamids have achieved an extraordinary civilization. The Rustamid tolerance was based on their ideology. The moderate Ibadite doctrine inspired the Rustamids to become tolerant to their various people. Actually, Indonesians with their diversity could also achieve high civilization such as what the Rustamid has achieved in terms of religious tolerance.
