Abstract

Old ways die hard. Why? Old ways which we use to build the future of organization die hard because we are not bold enough to question the fitness of our philosophies underlying them. Planning used in the traditional management is based on the following philosophies: (1) creating the future from the past, (2) leverage is placed on tangible assets, (3) planning is rule keeping efforts, (4) planning is a single-scenario planning, (5) planning is executed ad hoc, especially at strategic level. In this article, I discussed the shift of philosophies underlying the ways management used to plan the future in order for their organization to survive and prosper in facing a competitive and turbulent environment. The new environment demands a radical change of the ways they use to plan the future of their organization.Key words: planning; strategic planning

Abstract

The succes of Higher Educational Institution in competing is highly depends on how the institution gives the satisfaction to customers through the creation of quality service. Many corporations have got their success because they are able to apply quality management principles. Total Quality Service (TQS) is a service quality management that can be used as strategic tools for Higher Educational Institution in the effort to get sustainable service quality improvement. In order to apply the TQS successfully, a Higher Educational Institution must be able to identify existing constraints. This research is intended to find potential constraints on the application of TQS and it was conducted in the Private University, School of Business, and Academy of Management/Accounting in Yogyakarta. This research is also to test the differences of potential constraints on the application of TQS among the Higher Education, that is Private University, School of Business, and Academy of Management/Accounting. Instruments used in this research are the same as the research instruments used by the previous research conducted by Ngai and Cheng (1999). The respondents of this research are faculties who have structural position in the Faculty of Economics in Private University, School of Business, and Academy of Management/Accounting.This research findings show that, in general, the potential constaints on the application of TQS in the Higher Education are cultural and employee factor, infrastructural factor, and organizational factor. Other findings also show that infrastructural factor is the main constraint, and is followed by cultural and employee factor, and organizational factor. By using a hypothetical testing with 95% confidence level, the conclusions of the findings are follow: there are no significant differences of the potential constraints on the application of TQS in the higher education; there are no significant differences of the potential constraint on the application of TQS between Private University and School of Business; and there are significant differences of the potential constraint on the application of TQS between Private University and Academy of Management/Accounting, and School of Business with Academy of Management/ Accounting. Keywords: potential constraints, Total Quality Service, service quality, customer

Abstract

Kata kunci: role stress, burnout, adaptability, self efficacy, relational selling intention, sales performance, dan two-step approach to structural equation modeling.

Abstract

IPO (initial public offerings) has been characterized by a lack of publicly available information. In the offerings process, financial statement disclosures are especially critical to the market price-setting process (Neill et al. 1995). In this paper, we examine the accounting methods choices accompanying the initial public offerings of 100 companies that listed at Jakarta Stock Exchange for 1994-1999 periods. Using regression analysis, the methods choice of the sample firms are examined with regard to the company initial offering proceeds.Accounting choice is viewed as a means by which issuers may affect the proceeds of the initial offering. We hypothetized that the issuers with accounting methods result in larger income and asset values (income-increasing methods), has higher initial proceeds than the issuers using income decreasing methods. The accounting methods that we examined are accounting method for inventory valuation and depreciation methods. Other independent variable, which included in the research model are equity book value and ownership signal. Our result indicate no positive association between the initial proceeds from an offering and the selection of accounting methods that result in larger income and asset values. The result is not consistent with the hypotheses of Neill et.al (1995) study, which indicate a marginally positive association. Keywords: IPO, income-increasing methods, income-decreasing methods.

Abstract

Economic Faculties in Indonesian Universities have been teaching economics in the Neoclassical tradition as in Samuelson’s Economics, a combination of Classical liberalism and Marginal Utility theory. But the development experience in the last 32 years which have created extreme inequalities in the distribution of wealth and income have raised the issues of economic and social justice. ”Social economics insist that justice is a basic element of social economic organization – (which is) far more important than allocative efficiency. Inefficient societies abound and endure in the historical record but societies that lack widespread conviction as to their justness are inherently unstable. ” ….. The most fundamental difference between the social-economics perspective and that of mainstream economics is that the latter has for its principal focus the production of good and services while the former focuses on the reproduction of society. (E.K. Hunt, History of Economic Thought A Critical Perspective, 1979). An atmosphere need to be created whereby economists are prepared to take on what is best from the social science; economics is more likely to be changed by its friends than by its critics; in business as well as in theory we prefer not the metaphor of the invisible hand but rather that of the “invisible handshake” the spirit of cooperation and competition. 1)Keywords: justice, ideology, Neoclassical Economics, and social economics
