Abstract

In the last seventeen years, Riau province has suffered from fire disaster and smog despite several effortstaken by the government. These problems have brought damaging impact to the peatland forest where fireis likely to occur especially during dry season. The continuation of fire disaster in peatland has caused theorganic compound within peat soil to decompose and oxidize. The physical characteristics of the peatland arealso changing, for instance: its ability to restore water. In dry season peat soil is extremely dry due to the depletionof groundwater. This has caused the peatsoil release methane gas which will affect the soil porosity. This condition makes peatland prone to fire. This paper suggests that the improvement of capilary density of thepeat soil as a preventive way to stop the fire incident. The method is carried out by replanting endogeneousplants or vegetation on the peatland. A tube of 5 11m diameter is capable of rising the water up to 2.96 m fromthe surface of table water (groundwater level). It is aproximately equal to radius of xylem tube within plants. The height of a column of water in a single tube with a circular cross-section radius r is driven by the balanceof two forces. They are force of gravity and adhesive florce between the walls of the tube.Key word: capillary density, moisture content, wetting, replanting, ground waterlevel

Abstract

Concentration,  distribution  and  correlation  of  seven  heavy  metals  in  seawater,  sediment  and gastropod Cerithidea  obtusa from coastal waters in the proximity of abandoned tin mining in Singkep Island has been evaluated. Samples were taken from five stations and heavy metal analysis was carried out by using AAS Perkin Elmer 3110 in Marine Chemistry Laboratory Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science University ofRiau. The mean concentrations  ofCd, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Mn and Cr were 0.0373,  0.0776,  0.1340,  0.1692,01789,  0,1205  and  0.3232  mg/1 in  seawater;  2.0445,   11.5359,  24.6859,  23.7992,  13.2925,  13.1097  and79.0821  f.lg/g in sediment and 3.03, 69.71, 14.30, 120.73,  11.62, 56.29 and 18.75  J..lg/g in C. obtusa, respec tively. In general, the concentrations of metals in coastal water receiving effluents from abandoned tin mining activities in Singkep Island were higher than in coastal waters with less mining activities. Concentrations  of all those metals in seawater were positively correlated with sediment and  gastropod and its concentrations   in sediment  were  also  positively  correlated  with  those  in  gastropod.  Mean  concentration   of  all  metals  in sediment were still below the ERM values, except for Cd which was exceeded the ERL but  they were all still below the ERM  values.  Continuous  environment  monitoring  programs  should  be implemented  in Singkep Island coastal waters to evaluate possible increase of heavy metal threat as some new sand and bauxit mining activities are taking place.Key words: heavy metal, seawater, sediment, Cerithidea obtusa, mining

Abstract

Utilization of fly ash and dreg on peat soil to improve soil fertility is potential because there are largeamount of fly ash and dreg as well as the existence of critical. This study was aimed to determine the effect of fly ash and dreg on the growth and the accumulation  of metals Ba, Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and Se of Acacia crassicarpa and its absorption  efficiency in the peat soil. The results showed that the addition of fly ash and dreg with dif ferent doses and different  harvesting  time influenced  on the growth and the accumulation  of heavy metals in Acacia crassicarpa. The results of the study also indicated that there were differences in the absorption efficien cy of heavy metals by Acacia crassicarpa. Keywords: fly ash, dreg, metal accumulation, absorption efficiency, Acacia crassicarpa.

Abstract

Pollutant dispersion  modeling study of a stack is one of the efforts in addressing  the problems  thatemissions of the palm oil industry can match the capacity of the environment, so it will not impact on the envi ronment  and society.  Screeen  view SCREEN3  software,  based of Gaussian  dispersion  method  for dust, CO, NOx, and SOx pollutant,  was used for pollutant  dispersiion modeling.  The input parameters  in the simulation were the rate of emission of pollutants  emitted from the stack, the air velocity around the source of emissions, atmospheric stability factor, and the topography of the site. While the expected output was a visualization of dis tribution of pollutants concentration  in the form of 2-dimensional  plane-shaped  contour that came with concen tration values of the distance from the source  of emission. Modeling  in this study was conducted  with several scenarios that the average meteorological  conditions at the time of measurement and the worst conditions. The results showed that the dominant wind direction was to the south with an average speed of 5.87 m/s. The result ing emission rate was 36.4 g/s. As for the pollutants, CO was 13.84 g/ s, SOx was 0.213 g/s and NOx 24.49 g/ s. Emission maximum distance was 1340 m from the stack with dust concentration  at 133.9 ug/m3   The concentra tions of CO, NOx, and SOx were 50.90 ug/m3   90.06 ug/m3;  0.7833 ug/m3  respectively. Keywords: environment,  pollutant  dispersion  modeling,  stack,  palm oil mill,  Gaussian  dispersion  method,  Screen  viewScreen3
