Abstract

The main problem facing by fishermen for capturing skipjack tuna is limited information of potential skipjack fishing areas such as the frontal locations. The purpose of this study was to analyze the spatial and temporal skipjack tuna distributions and thermal fronts, and to determine the effect of climate change on their distribution and abundance during transitional seasons. We used a survey method, in which catch and fishing position data were collected by following pole and line fishing operations. This study also collected secondary data that consisted of sea surface temperatures (SSTs) and chlorophyll-a derived from Aqua / MODIS. Fronts were determined by calculating SST gradient, SSTs preferences, chlorophyll-a, bathymetry and distance from coastline, whereas SST anomaly was calculated from the difference between monthly SST and mean SST. We mapped satellite and field data using ArcGIS 10.0.  The results showed that the highest catch of skipjack tuna with an average of 205 fish/set were found in October 2013, which occurred in the areas of 4o40S-5o10S and 120o40E-121oE. The locations had a temperature gradient of 0.4oC and chlorophyll-a density from 0,15 to 0,23 mg m-3. Potential fishing areas may associate with negative SST anomalies of -2.1373 - -0.6469oC, reflecting that skipjack tuna tend to be at thermal fronts with relatively lower SST compared with an average of seven years.

Abstract

Mackerel is one of the main targets of hand line fishing in the   Tambelan coastal waters, Bintan Regency. The mackerel catch data were collected by following the hand line fishing operation as many as  40 trips from December 2013 to April 2014. The productivity data of hand line fishing were calculated based on the time of fishing operations (morning, noon, afternoon). The average productivity of hand line fishing in the morning, daytime and afternoon  were  0.051  kg/minutes,  0.036  kg/minutes and 0.033  kg/minutes, respectively. Handline  fishing  productivity  in the  morning was not  significantly  different  with at  the daytime, however there was a significant different in productivity between in the morning and in the afternoon. Whilst,   the fishing productivity at the daytime was not significantly different with that in the afternoon.

Abstract

Spiny  lobster  (Panulirus spp)  is  one  of  important  commodities  in  BulukumbaRegency.  The lobsters used for aquaculture were obtained from the wild catch in the sea. The purpose of  this study  was to  develop artificial gear to attract the lobster seed to beeasily caught.   The research was conducted in marine coastal of Ujung Bulu, BulukumbaRegency, South Sulawesi from July to October 2013.   There are three artificial attractors that consisted  of  light  attractor,  trap  shelter  attractor,  and  shelter  benthic  attractor.  Results showed that the spiny lobster catches from artificial attractor consisted of 47.5 % of pearl lobster ((Panulirus ornatus), 25.8% of sand lobster (P. homarus), 21.2 % of bamboo lobster (P. versicolor), 5.6% of stone lobster (P. penicilatus). The carapace length of both pearl lobster and sand lobster ranged from 2,6 to 6,0 cm, which were longest among the other lobsters..

Abstract

A good stability of a fishing vessel determines the safety and the success of fishing operation. One of the critical factors affecting the quality of fishing boat’s stability is the on board loads arrangement. However, it is generally ignored by traditional fishermen, such as fishermen of payang boat. This condition may increase the possibility of capsizing as a result of less stability. A payang fishing boat should have a good stability. It is because while conducting fishing operation, this fishing boat should be capable of quick manoeuvering. This research aimed to analyse the stability of the boat in an existing loads arrangement and determine the arrangement for the better stability.  This research was conducted in two phases. The first phase was conducting a survey which to capture existing condition. The second one was developing a simulation of loads arrangement to gain the better parameter of stability. The results showed that the typical loads arrangement applying by traditional fishermen (existing condition) resulted on poor stability. Better stability was produced by placing more cargos under deck and avoiding overload on the deck.

Abstract

This research aims to study the cooperative roles as fisherman’s need provider (a Case study at Budi Bahari Cooperative, Barru Regency).   The major Problem that was interesting to discuss was how the cooperative roles as fisherman’s need to fulfill specificallyas a capital, equipment and daily needs provider, and to affect the consumer purchasedecision at Budi Bahari Cooperative. This study used a case study to assess the Budi Bahari Cooperative performance related to fishermen’s catch and daily life.   Purposive sampling method was used with respondents from Budi Bahari’s Cooperative staffs and five fisherman groups (25 people). Data were collected through direct interview for all respondents and were analyzed using chi square method. Results showed that Budi Bahari Cooperative gave sizeable role by loan capital, supply equipment and daily needs of cooperative’s members who work as a fisherman. Hence, the purchase decision was not influenced by the price, and but it was affected by product type, and goods distribution.

Abstract

The research was aimed at determining the effect of fishing techniques, handling facilities and methods on the quality of the catch. The research employed four types of fishing gears, i.e. purse seine, cantrang, gillnet and boat-liftnet with five replicates each. Five species of the dominant catch were taken for quality determination on-board, at landing sites, and after auctioning. The condition of handling facilities and methods were evaluated. Fish transit time (time lapse between the fish lifting and auction process) was also determined. Results indicated that the fish quality decreased as the transit time increased. Nearly all fish caught were subjected to neither good handling nor low temperature despite the availability of good handling facilities. Nevertheles, the fish quality remained fairly good up to the point of soon after auctioning (pH’s<7 and organoleptic scores >7). When alone, none of the quality predictors affected the fish quality. However, when the fishing techniques were compounded the quality predictors significantly affected the fish quality. Regression analysis showed that, when the fishing techniques were uncompounded, 73.96% of the fish quality was determined by fishing with purse seine, cantrang, boat-liftnet and fish transit time. When fishing techniques were compounded, however, the fishing techniques, on-board handling methods, on-board and on landing site handling facilities, and the fish transit time contributed 73.96% effect to the fish quality. The PCA analysis showed that as much as 52.52% and 27.27% the fish quality were determined by the purse seine and cantrang, respectively.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the status of demersal fishing and make a thematic map location of the fishing activities. The research was carried out around Buyat Ratatotok Southeast Minahasa regency, for 7 months beginning with the planning phase tothe writing of the report. This research was done by using a survey method that is based on adescriptive approach. Caught as many as 96 species of fish catches dominant base with as many as 12 types, namely trevallies buliling and blue (Carangoides gymnostethus), trevallies pongko (Carangoides fulvoguttatus), trevallies box, yellow and Wayan (Carangoides ferdau), trevallies Napo and trevallies lao (Citula armatus), trevallies mopi (Caranx ignobilis), trevallies sangkalade and sangkapete (Carangoides uii) and trevallies Sepo (Seriola dumerili). All types of fish caught by rod dodango . Basic fishing season occurs during the seven months of the year, in January and March, then in May to July and in November and December. Maximum sustainable catches made as many as 25 trips per day by the number of catches as many as152 birds. The average size of the catch weight of 1.5 kg or so carrying capacity of 228 kg of biomass per day. When per kg catch for Rp.10.000,- then every fisherman has a revenue of Rp. 90.000,- per day basis tertagkap fish in the waters around Buyat with the locations of existing Napo with a depth range between 30 and 80 meters.
