Abstract

The dynamics of coastal area developments has impacted on the coastal environment including environmental degradation, coastal erosion, tidal flood, and slum area. This study aims to determine public perception of the sustainability of coastal areas in Sarang Sub-district regarding sustainable development indicators which cover social, economic, and environmental aspects. The study used quantitative approach method with scoring and descriptive qualitative analyses in determining the levels of sustainability in Sarang Sub-district. It was divided into three criteria, i.e. high, medium, and low levels. The study highlighted that the level of sustainability in Sarang Sub-district coastal area was at a medium level for all aspects. The medium scale showed that the development and resource utilization occurred could improve the social welfare and be tolerated in terms of the environment. However, the low awareness on the environment cleanliness still needs more attention to minimizing the environmental degradation Sarang Sub-district coastal area. Therefore, the local community is encouraged to have a greater awareness for ensuring its sustainability in the future.

Abstract

Disaster is an event which suddenly or slowly occurs caused by human, nature, or even both. Disaster is not only related to the physical environment where disaster found but also to the livelihood of the community. Coastal rural is vulnerable to the coastal disaster such as flood and tidal flood due to their high dependency on the coastal resources. The vulnerability assessment of the coastal rural is very important in order to identify the level of vulnerability and to recommend crucial strategies for reducing the risk of disaster exposure in the future. This study aims to identify the socio-economic vulnerability in the rural coastal community of Demak Regency. Vulnerability assessment was carried out through a spatial explicit modeling. The results showed that 33 villages equivalent to 42% out of the total 78 villages were categorized as most vulnerablesocially and economically. The remaining 45 villages accounted for 58% were less vulnerable. Therefore, efforts on the disaster mitigation are necessary to reducing the exposure impact to the coastal rural community.

Abstract

Ternate waterfront city development initiative 2006-2015 was designated for anticipating the limitation of land use due to high population increase, geographical and topographical constraints of the region, the threat of catastrophic volcanic eruption, and the national and provincial development strategies. The purpose of this study was to analyze the urban service hierarchy inside the city responding the initiative. The methodology used in this research was scalogram analysis for calculating infrastructure availability variables. The results showed that the post-implementation of waterfront city development initiative (2005-2011) the number of infrastructure availability and accessibility has improved, particularly in the coastal urban villages inside the waterfront city development area.

Abstract

In the last eight years (2008-2016), some areas in the northern part of Pekalongan have been experiencing coastal inundation. There have been social, economic and physical disruptions caused by coastal inundation particularly on built environments, paddy fields, and fishpond. The capacity of these areas to provide support for community livelihood has decreased significantly. This accumulative environmental change leads to the emergence of vulnerable regions which are characterized by limited social and ecological capacity to respond hazards. In order to enhance the social-ecological resilience, it is necessary to identify how the community has elevated their capacity and improved their livelihood. This paper presents empirical evidence of various pathways on how the community has transformed their capacity to respond to the changing environment due to coastal inundation. Following case study approach, this paper explores how the community has learned from their experiences, knowledge, and efforts from the past, and transformed them into a better understanding to cope with, to adapt to, and to become resilient from coastal inundation. The research applied in-depth interviews involving key persons selected through purposive and snowballing samplings. They represented the most capable person in each sub-district whose important data and information related to coastal inundation at the individual, household, and community organization levels belong to. The scope of area observation was limited to six sub-districts adjacent to the coast in the North Pekalongan District. The results showed that social-ecological resilience is likely to enhance in a community with flexible networking building capability. Such networking is beneficial to spreading out the important information, novel knowledge and practical tools and solutions to the community. These are the key elements for new transformative pathways. However, there remain various community capacities with different achievements on transformative pathways necessary to the future empowerment initiatives. Only a few communities in Kandang Panjang Sub-district who have performed a short-term resilience due to their awareness on establishing social networking and several actions on environmental quality improvements.

Abstract

Climate change has been one of the major causes of environmental damage which needs to be anticipated early. In Indonesia, particularly in Semarang City, it has destroyed ponds and mangrove forests through erosion and sea level rise processes. The significant impact of climate change is exacerbated by the lack of public knowledge related to its threat, which in turn affects to the decrease in farmers’ income. This situation encouraged the Mercy Corps Indonesia in cooperation with the Government of Semarang Municipality and the Bintari Foundation to develop activities for strengthening the coastal area protection through the development of seawalls under the program named "Enhancing Coastal Community Resilience by Strengthening Mangrove Ecosystem Services and Developing Sustainable Livelihood in Semarang City". The construction of tires seawalls and Hybrid Engineering (HE) were completed in 2016. It had immediate impacts on the community in coastal areas. This article aims to review the monitoring of and the lesson learned from the seawalls construction for the communities in coastal areas, particularly in Genuk and Tugu Sub-districts. The methods used were mixed method research with a descriptive approach focusing on the analysis of measurable descriptive facts, which was supported by interviews for collecting tacit information in the community and reviews of archived reports on its development progress. The results showed that the seawalls development provides many positive effects for the community so that they are willing to maintain it for their own sake in the long term.
