Abstract

Abstract: Urbanization as a socio-economic change in developing countries has been leading to the existence of a region with a mixture of rural and urban character so called Peri-Urban Areas (PUA). PUA has been emerging as a part of urban growth process as well as rural growth, regarded as rural-urban transition. This phenomenon could be clearly observed in Klaten District, Central Java Province. Located between two strategic cities in Central Java, i.e. Yogyakarta and Surakarta, Klaten has been experiencing a significant land conversion (among the highest in the province) and a significant economic growth in comparison to other districts in the province. Accordingly, Klaten was chosen as the case study to understand the PUA development in Central Java. By focusing on socio-economic perspective, this paper aims to determine PUA typology in Klaten and further analyze the driving factors of the emerging PUA typology. Quantitative analysis using GIS tools and scoring method was applied to create the typology based on secondary socio-economic data taken from statistics report. As the results of the analysis, it has been shown that most of villages in the study area are highly rural in terms of social character. On the contrary, in economic aspect such as employment, the PUA of Klaten community has a strong urban character. It is classified as the fourth typology (highly rural in social character and highly urban in economic character) among the four identified PUA typologies in Klaten. The underlying influential factor of the development of PUA in Klaten is very much its local potential, i.e. the local economic activity. This may provide an evidence that urban and rural growth could be taken place as a part of ‘local’ growth which does not necessarily take place as a part of urban growth (expansion) of the main city (growth center). Keywords: Urbanization, Peri-Urban, Klaten

Abstract

This paper aims to further comprehend characteristic and influential factors oflocal potential development in peri urban area of Klaten – Central Java. Simpledescriptive statistic was applied to process the data obtained from questionairegiven to 57 respondents. The respondent are owner of various kinds of smallmediumindustries located in the peri-urban Klaten. The result of the analysisindicates that the activity of most of local based small-medium industries in periurbanKlaten are still lead to the production -oriented activities. Accordingly, based on the respondents’ perception, capital, labourers, and raw materials arechosen as the influential factors to boost the development of their local basedactivities. They are very unlikely to consider technology and innovation that mayimportant to create a more market based products/market-oriented activities asthe influential factors that should be further developed. Therefore, there is a needof paradigm shift for these economic actors to be directed to a morecontemporary thought that put element of technology and innovation as importantand should be improved rather than keep the traditional thought that onlyconsider conventional production factors as the key succes factors to developsuch economic activities.

Abstract

Population dynamics is one of the aspects be considered in regional planning. Population important to be noticed and taken into consideration because the population is subject and object of development in order to achieve prosperity. Migration is one of the three basic factors that influence the growth of the population, in addition to births (fertility) and death (mortality). Migration can increase the number of population if the number of people who go into an area more than the number of people who leave the region. This study examines the deeper dynamics of migration that occurred in Central Java. This study used a qualitative descriptive statistical analysis and map overlay analysis. Based on the results of studies that have been done that most region/ cities in Central Java included in quadrant III as many as 21 region/ cities (60%) and in quadrant I, as many as 11 region/ cities (31%). While the category quadrant II is only one region(3%) and quadrant IV only 2 region (6%).

Abstract

Slum settlement is one of the significant global problems which requires special concern in the discussion agenda of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of 2016-2030. The Sustainable Development Summit held in New York in September 2015 formulated that one of SDGs goals is to build inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable cities and settlements. In Indonesia, the achievement of this goal is stated in National Medium-Term Development Plan 2015-2019, i.e. creating 0% urban slum settlement which is supported by policies expected to accommodate the achievement of national development targets. Semarang Mayor Decree No. 050/801/2014 concerning the Determination of the Location of Housing Environment and Slum Settlements in Semarang City has been issued as the basis to identify slum settlements scattered throughout Semarang city, in terms of location, physical condition, and social conditions. This study was conducted by case studies on slum settlements in Trimulyo Village and Mangkang Wetan Village, Semarang city, Central Java Province, Indonesia, to formulate a slum upgrading model based on the resilience level of coastal communities towards climate change. The analysis included identifying the characteristics of slum settlements, scoring analysis to determine the resilience level possessed by coastal communities, and analysis of pentagon assets used to formulate slum upgrading models. The results of the study showed that these two research areas had a moderate level of vulnerability, with several different characteristics of asset ownership, particularly those related to human and social assets. Increasing the quality of human resources and social relations in the community was more intensified in the environment and community in Trimulyo, while improving the physical quality of the environment through housing improvements was carried out in Mangkang Wetan.

Abstract

Climate change is no longer seen as a natural process when it has been correlated with human behavior, especially from increasingly rapid development activities. In Semarang, climate change has been affecting people's activity, especially in the coastal area. Coastal communities that depend on coastal resources feel the effects of climate change. Fishers, mangrove farmers, and fishpond farmers are vulnerable groups to the impacts of climate change because the coastal resources in quality and quantity decrease and affect their lives. Stakeholders make efforts through mangroves rehabilitation programs all over the coastal line, including the community approach to increase the mangrove growth rate. However, mangrove seeds planted in Semarang coastal area have different levels of life and growth rate in each planting location. Based on Environmental Agency of Central Java Province data in 2013, 8,594.89 ha of 11,732 ha mangrove vegetation in the North Coast of Central Java Province are in damaged condition. Hence, this paper aims to elaborate on the key factors of community-based mangrove replantation affecting the mangrove growth in the Semarang coastal area. Five mangroves rehabilitation areas in Semarang namely in Kelurahan Mangkang Kulon, Mangkang Wetan, Mangunharjo, Tugurejo and Kelurahan Trimulyo are observed throughout 2015-2016. The results show that suitability between mangrove species and the location is very influential on mangrove growth rates in Semarang Coastal. The community effort in each location also becomes the external factor affecting the growth of mangroves in Semarang Coastal Area. By understanding the factors of mangrove growth rate on the community-based mangrove replantation, better results of mangrove replantation programs can be acquired in the future.

Abstract

Climate change has been one of the major causes of environmental damage which needs to be anticipated early. In Indonesia, particularly in Semarang City, it has destroyed ponds and mangrove forests through erosion and sea level rise processes. The significant impact of climate change is exacerbated by the lack of public knowledge related to its threat, which in turn affects to the decrease in farmers’ income. This situation encouraged the Mercy Corps Indonesia in cooperation with the Government of Semarang Municipality and the Bintari Foundation to develop activities for strengthening the coastal area protection through the development of seawalls under the program named "Enhancing Coastal Community Resilience by Strengthening Mangrove Ecosystem Services and Developing Sustainable Livelihood in Semarang City". The construction of tires seawalls and Hybrid Engineering (HE) were completed in 2016. It had immediate impacts on the community in coastal areas. This article aims to review the monitoring of and the lesson learned from the seawalls construction for the communities in coastal areas, particularly in Genuk and Tugu Sub-districts. The methods used were mixed method research with a descriptive approach focusing on the analysis of measurable descriptive facts, which was supported by interviews for collecting tacit information in the community and reviews of archived reports on its development progress. The results showed that the seawalls development provides many positive effects for the community so that they are willing to maintain it for their own sake in the long term.

Abstract

Semarang is one of many cities which has high vulnerability, damage, and high risk affected by climate change. This study was aimed to determine securing, protecting of Semarang coastal area, especially in Tugu and Genuk Sub-district. Literature review was carried out to seek the proper seawall design and material which feasible to be built in coastal area of Tugu and Genuk Sub-district. Field observation was conducted to determine location characteristic to build seawall in Tugu and Genuk Sub-district. The study revealed that many area of Semarang coast was damage as impact of coastal building, the loss of natural protection as well as effect of global warming. The existing seawall was varied but mostly in damage condition. Therefore it is recommend to build seawall in Karanganyar and Tugurejo Village (in Tugu subdistrict) to support the eco-edutourism in Semarang City as well as ini Trimulyo Village (Genuk Subdistrict) to established sediment enrichment ready for mangroves replant.
