Abstract

A literary work is woven over the various texts around it. One of the texts that cannot be ignored is the social, cultural, and historical texts. Literary works must take into account their relationship with other texts. This article aims to discuss the relationship of the novel of Negeri Perempuan with historical texts, mostly the photo-shaped text of the family collection of the royal heirs of Pagaruyung. This research data collected through literature studies. The research data unit is in the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs in the novel of Negeri Perempuan. Data analysis takes place intertextually. The study shows seven intertextual forms in the novel of Negeri Perempuan, namely existence, expansion, modification, transformation, conversion, defamiliarization, and demitification. The author used the seven intertextual forms to confirm the existence of the family of the heirs of the Pagaruyung kingdom. We conclude that foto Tangga Batu Berlumut is a historical text used by writers to weave novel. This finding is evidence that the relationship between history and literary works is indisputable. History can be recorded in literary works; instead, literary works can record a nation's civilization's history

Abstract

Until the 21st Century, teachers are still seen in different constructs in countries such as the Philippines and Thailand. Though teachers' academic and non-academic roles are indispensably intertwined in the students' holistic development, the former roles are mostly the topic of query, clarification, and improvement, leaving the latter unclear. Nonetheless, the non-academic ones must be equally highlighted to educate the teaching force to achieve students' learning targets. Moreover, these roles lead to constructs, and these are seen in the modern representation of literary texts – films. In the Thai movie "Teacher's Diary," these non-academic constructs were perceived by the students. In analyzing the movie, to appreciate the literature world's cultural and aesthetic diversity, the participants identified these constructs emerging from their critical reflections. This study was made to discern and present non-academic constructs of the Thai and Filipino 21st Century teachers based on their written reflections. By using a qualitative approach, particularly content analysis, the non-academic constructs are revealed by students' critical reflection such as parental, vocational, epitomical, fortitudinous, and motivational constructs. In conclusion, teachers are seen as parents, servers, epitomes, enduring, encouraging, and inspiring. These provide insights to improve the teaching profession

Abstract

Women have been oppressed through the domination of patriarchy that controls their lives. Therefore, women resist the oppression by speaking up for their rights to own one’s life. This study investigates women's oppression and their resistance in the novel A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum. Deploying Patricia Hill Collins' theory of Matrix of Domination and Self-Definition, this study applied a descriptive-analytical method in analyzing how women experience oppression and their actions in resisting it. Portrayed by the three generations of Arab-American female characters, the result of this study finds women are experiencing oppressions managed within the four domains of power: structural, disciplinary, hegemonic, and interpersonal domain of power. While men have the privilege of being free, women are burden with the family’s reputation and domestic duties that turn them into a docile individual. Furthermore, women’s self-definition helps them to gather their self-worth to counter the oppression. Women’s resistances are realized through their ability to maintain self-valuation and respect, self-reliance and independence, and personal empowerment through the act of being brave in voicing their thoughts, going to college, and living on their own, and encouraging each other to raise awareness of self-definition

Abstract

Indonesia president, Mr. Joko Widodo, delivered a speech concerning some decisions related to social support and people's massive movements to stop the COVID-19 in Indonesia. Some unique functional grammar, namely theme-rheme and thematic progression, are found in his speech. The research focuses on analyzing the theme-rheme and the thematic progression (TP) types in Joko Widodo's speech both in the source language (SL) or Bahasa Indonesia and target language (TL) or English translation. It made a comparison to depict the differences and similarities between them. This study was a descriptive qualitative research method by taking the speech texts and their translation. The research results showed that the most frequently used theme in both SL and TL speech texts was the topical theme (66%). The second was the textual theme, and the least used was the interpersonal theme. Both SL and TL speech texts employed all thematic progression that shows the texts have been developed cohesively. However, the theme derived thematic progression becomes the most frequent TP as the speaker and translator used a single theme to develop another related theme in the next clause. This type of TP stated the different dominant types of TP used by other presidents' speech
