Abstract

This paper is mainly about the use of local culture content short story in developing students' English proficiency and some activities that can be employed for this purpose. The local culture exposed in the short story is the traditional woven clothes of Palembang, Songket in term of process and product. The short story used in this topic is Cek Ipah "The Palembang Songket Weaver". This short story is authors' original work telling about everyday live of palembang songket weaver which covers both process and also product of songket. It is presented in intriguing theme in order to make the short story more interesting and has some moral lessons to appriciate. In relating this cultural heritage to ELT, approaches used by Collie and Slater is employed. Some activities employed for this short story are whispering sentences technique designed especially for a rousing students' focus on the short story and to train their listening skill, Kids Inspiration outline completing activity for reading comprehension, Drawing mind activity for reading comprehension, cutting process video discussion activity for speaking skills, and sealing time capsule technique activities for developing students' writing ability. The lesson plan designed is just for the first part of the first short story-just until the time when Cek Ipah would like to show songket Lepus Berekam she had woven to her ever after enemy, Cek Beda, the Zainal Songket quality controller. In this lesson plan two kinds of software use, they are windows photo gallery software and 3GP player for video.

Abstract

In English language, there are integrated skills to be mastered such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. Listening is the language modality that is used most frequently; however, language learners do not recognize the level of effort that goes into developing listening ability. Therefore, it is essential for language teachers to help students become effective listeners. One of efforts can be done is teaching listening through video.The writer used quasi-experimental method with two groups' pre-test, posttest design. The independent variable of this research is the use of video and the dependent variable is the students' listening ability. In this research, the population is all the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 26 OKU, in academicyearsof2009-2010. AH of the populations are taken as samples of investigation. The data of this study collected by means of written test.The results show that the students from the experimental group used video has better achievement in learning asking and giving direction than the students from control group. There was a significant difference in teaching listening through video and not using video. Therefore, it can be concluded that teaching listening through video was more effective than CD to the eighth students of SMP Negeri 26 OKU.

Abstract

This article discusses the synonymous word "mistake*.The discussion will also cover the meaning of 'word' itself. Words can be considered as form whether spoken or written, or alternatively as composite expression, which combine and meaning. Synonymous are different phonological words which have the same or very similar meanings. The synonyms of mistake are error, fault, blunder, slip, slipup, gaffe and inaccuracy. The data is taken from a computer program. The procedure of data collection is by clicking the right mouse on the word mistake. Abstract

The process of civil servant teacher's recruitment makes a school to possibly have both, or either, qualified and under qualified English teachers. The former can observe their job as teachers well while the later might not. The case is worse when they are not only incapable of teaching well but also still need help in their English proficiency. Asking them to take an English class is almost impossible. There must be ways of developing then professionalism while they are performing their tasks as teachers.Building a cooperative learning group for English teachers will improve their professionalism, both the qualified and under qualified ones, with its very slogan "sink and swim together". Each group will be responsible for the improvement of all members because their success is determined by the success of the group and the group also determines the success of the individual. Being in this group, qualified teachers can help their friends with their experiences while those who are not lucky in terms of both English and teaching skills will benefit from them without feeling underestimated due to the individual accountability characteristic of cooperative learning.In the group, teachers can do various professional development activities. They can build a discussion group, a reading group, peer observation and team teaching, and conduct a collaborative action research. This group will work better if the head master or a coordinator keeps an eye on it. This movement will also be much more effective if it is used as one of the criteria of kenaikan pangkat.

Abstract

The languages used all over the world have their own grammars consisting of certain components, like items, word order, and prosodic patterns. Based on the findings of the typological research conducted by some linguists, like Chomsky (1965), Greenberg (1966), and Hawkins (1983), it is known that the human languages have certain tendencies. After comparing a number of 30languages, Greenberg made three classifications of language in terms of universal word order, they are; (1) the languages of VSO type, (2) languages of SVO type, and (3) languages of SOV type. He found that the three types of classification correlate with the languages in other places in the grammar consistently. In addition, he also made 15 formulations of universal word orders in which three of the mare; (1) Languages with dominant SVO order always have prepositions; (2) on the contrary, the ones with SOY type usually have postpositions; and (3) in the languages with dominant SVO order, the genitive and adjectives follow the noun. This formulation is supported by Hawkins after comparing 336 languages from different families. Based on the above formulation; it is found that English has uniqueness in terms of the phrase order. In this language, the order of NP is AN and GN despite having a relatively fixed order, SVO. This study aims to discuss the forms of English NP and to find out the reason why English has uniqueness in its phrase order based on the formulation made by Greenberg and Hawkins.

Abstract

This paper supports an idea that humor has a significant role in increasing the English learners' communicative competence. It is very common for teachers to present humor in English classrooms, whether it is purposely presented or spontaneously practiced in classroom activities. Yet, regardless of its significant contribution in language learning activities, it is highly likely that humor is one point that remains untouched in language learning. How many English textbooks containing humor in it? We hardly ever find any syllabi purposefully present the ability of students to tell or to understand jokes. Telling jokes in a serious classroom maybe considered as something inappropriate as it may distract the classroom activities. Therefore, spontaneous humor may sometimes be viewed as an 'off task' behavior. However, it is sometimes forgotten that understanding other people's joke may be one of the keys of understanding other cultures, and ,more importantly, building a relationship with people from other countries.

Abstract

Native speakers, English mother tongue, speak naturally. Although they do not think the way how they are pronouncing words, they seem to simplify their speeches-Therefore, it is often difficult to understand what is spoken by them because it is heard like babbling. One of the simplifications of speeches is assimilation. Assimilation is one of phonological processes. Comprehending its phonological process means understanding its input, environment, and process. Therefore, all phenomena of pronunciation particularly assimilation are collected and then they are classified and described one by one based on its input, environment and process. The result of the research is that to anticipate the preceding word, the first is anticipating the preceding: a) when alveolar is preceded by bilabial, alveolar will anticipate the bilabial by changing alveolar into bilabial, b) when alveolar is preceded by velar, alveolar will anticipate the velar by changing alveolar into velar, c) when alveolar is preceded by palato alveolar, alveolar will anticipate by changing into palato alveolar.

Abstract

Translating formal text that may contain social, political, and crucial issues that involve many parties and possibly pose reactions across countries does not seem to be a simple task to complete. Due to diverse reactions of readers from different languages, a translator needs to be very careful to transfer meanings and the emotion within a text. Translation strategies, language use, types of text, genre, discourse and values are urgent issues to reconsider during the translation process. This paper investigates the translation strategies implemented in the Indonesian translation of the U.S. Embassy Press Release in response to Newsweek's Report on Alleged Desecration of the Holy Qur'an from the point of views of text, genre, and discourse as proposed by Hatim and Munday. In addition, several alternative translations are also offered to show different impacts of a translated text. Despite many translation methods that are used in doing the translation process, a text still bear its own genre, discourse and therefore stands in its own identity while at the same time the target text should keep voicing at least similar values and bring about similar impacts on readers.
