Abstract

Language is reflected by pronunciation, syntax, and lexicon. So is the American African English. A sit is considered non-standard dialect, the American African English pronunciation is assumed to have its own characteristic different from the standard American. English. Furthermore, according to a linguist, pronunciation of a community is clearly patterned and systematic. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to describe pronunciation of the American African English in Georgia Doyle Johnson's Frederick Douglas And Loraine Hansbeiry's A Raisin In The Sun, in the viewpoints of droppings, addings, and spelling derivations.This paper is descriptive linguistics rather than a stylistic study as it does not focus on literary style. The data taken was classified into linguistic elements and was tested to the theories of informal English in general; African American English in particular and Standard American English rules of pronunciation. The research findings were summarized and discussed to conclude the research.The result of the research demonstrates that African American English, a variant of informal English, is different from the rules of Standard American English In terms of pronunciation, African American English speakers tend to pronounce words as they like. Therefore, the pronunciations of words are very different from Standard English Words maybe dropped or shortened and some additional sounds included or changed. Words such as jes', fallin', 'em, fore', mo', yo' cap'n, yes'm, alissenin', figger, bleve, sho, enuf, wus, whut, mek, s'ed, agin, git, lak, yaw, ur, yore, etc. frequently occur and are common in African American English. Thus, African American English pronunciation is difficult to understand and strange for students of non-English speaking countries.

Abstract

This paper is a study investigating the different roles of English language teacher as they are particularly perceived by a novice English teacher. I am primarily interested in knowing and understanding how a novice teacher perceives her different roles as an English language teacher given her status as a beginning teacher who may still be relatively new in her teaching profession. Hence, being perceived as a new, and therefore, a less experienced one, her accounts and take on her different teaching roles are valuable to learn as they may reflect her pedagogical knowledge, limitations, expectations and the challenges she may face in assuming her different roles as an English language teacher which may as well be quite different from those of more senior or experience English language teachers.This study is a progressive qualitative. The data, in a form of texts, were presented and analyzed based on the narratives of the research participant. The use of narrative research inquiry was intended to seek insightful meanings and understandings of the individual's perceptions of her different roles as an English language teacher. The data were taken both from interviews and classroom observations.The findings of this study underline the participant's sound grasp and firm understanding of her various teaching roles and reveal a range of roles she had to perform involving thoughtful considerations of her teaching practices. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that a further or subsequent research conducted within a similar topic may also try to solely focus on one of the findings of the perceived teacher's roles in order to gain a deeper insight on it. A probable research may therefore investigate the degree of each role to see how it comes into being, what related factors may come into play and what constraints as well as challenges may come with each and or with all of the teaching role(s).Alternatively, a related study may also attempt for a comparative study investigating the similarities and differences of the various teaching roles perceived by both novice teachers and more experienced teachers. Finally, there may also be a need for an investigation on the students' perceptions towards English language teachers' various and effective roles in relation to their learning.

Abstract

Translating does not seem to be a trouble-free work. There are abundant tricks, strategies and adaptations to meet the need of being called 'sufficient' translation and thus it provides similar responses of the readers and brings about similar 'soul' of the original text. Translation works comprise many values and objectives of its author and the text itself. Not only is it a matter of transferring ideas or stories into other languages, but also a process of transferring culture, ideology, politics and social messages of the original text. This paper will discuss translation methods/strategies (the terms will be used interchangeably in this paper) that may be applied by the Indonesian translator in translating "Sophie's World" as well as investigate the values that are embedded in the translation version as compared to the original text. Two-page-alternative translations will also be offered as another option of applying translation methods.

Abstract

Native speakers, English mother tongue, speak naturally. Although they do not think the way how they are pronouncing words, they seem to simplify their speeches-Therefore, it is often difficult to understand what is spoken by them because it is heard like babbling. One of the simplifications of speeches is assimilation. Assimilation is one of phonological processes. Comprehending its phonological process means understanding its input, environment, and process. Therefore, all phenomena of pronunciation particularly assimilation are collected and then they are classified and described one by one based on its input, environment and process. The result of the research is that to anticipate the preceding word, the first is anticipating the preceding: a) when alveolar is preceded by bilabial, alveolar will anticipate the bilabial by changing alveolar into bilabial, b) when alveolar is preceded by velar, alveolar will anticipate the velar by changing alveolar into velar, c) when alveolar is preceded by palato alveolar, alveolar will anticipate by changing into palato alveolar.

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out whether teaching vocabulary by usingventriloquism as a teaching aid is effective, how this technique can improve students’ vocabulary, and whether there is any significant difference between students taught before the treatment and after the treatment. This research is an action research. The respondents of the research were selected randomly. The respondents are 45 students of the first semester of English Department Faculty of Letters Ahmad Dahlan University in Academic Year 2011/2012. The research instrument used by the researcher was the test and questionnaire. The data in the research are mainly gathered through the use of pre-test and post-test. After the data were collected, the researcher analyzed them. The researcher used questionnaire to see the students’ response to this method when it was applied in teaching and learning process. The questionnaire was used to support the primary data from the teaching learning activities and the test. The finding of the research shows that there is a significant difference between teaching vocabulary before using ventriloquism and after using ventriloquism. Before the treatment, the mean is 59.35, the standard deviation is 6.47. After the treatment, the mean is 74.77, while the standard deviation is 15.99. It means that there is a significant difference in teaching vocabulary before using ventriloquism and after using ventriloquism.

Abstract

This study discusses the personality change influenced by the past life in the antagonist character in J.K Rowling’s “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince The Past Experience has an effect in the antagonist character, Lord Voldemort. It is always interesting to discuss the effect of the past experience which can make a difference to someone’s character. Every Person has its own personality but the effect of the past life can make big impact to his/her personality.This study is aimed to analyze what kind of past life which affect the personality of the character, Lord Voldemort. The psychological theory will be used to give explanation about personality and changes of personalities. Furthermore, psychological approach will be used in this study because personality is one of the aspects of a person’s psychology.

Abstract

Children need to be equipped with the ability to navigate the world and to think independently, not just recite facts. One of the thinking ability dimensions is creating thinking associated with the ability to explore ideas, conclude possibilities, and find correct answers more than one answer. In this era of globalization and advances in technology, where changes rapidly occur in community, creative thinking ability is a need for every human being who want to succeed in a variety of competitions. Therefore, the ability to think creatively should be given since the age of early childhood.One way to develop critical and creative thinking is to give children experiences in thinking critically and creatively and it is known as high order thinking skills (HOTS). As basic of developing HOTS we can learning domains created by Benjamin Bloom. Accordingly there are three domains, these are cognitive, effective, and psychomotorIn Kindergarten level, to train high order thinking to children is through joyful activities and not through hard thinking exercices and it is satisfying kindergarten motto that is learn by playing and play while learning. One of joyful activities for children in which we can develop high order thinking skills is story telling. A structured and systematic story telling activity is story telling method, This method has been broadly used in many kindergarten because naturally there is no child who doesn't like a story. The purpose of this method generally is to develop language aspect of children development. However, other aspects can also be developed in line with the development of language, one of them is cognitive aspectUsually, story telling method is attributed by ask and answer activities that can take place before, while, and after story telling. In this activities teacher ^k the children what they have heard to check their understanding. .Sometimes, the teacher ask them about the story before the story is delivered to them. This strategy is to train them to predict a story by thinking about the title of the story. However, observations to some kindergarten classes - showed that most of the teachers questions were about remembering something rather than asking them to think critically. This paper will describe how teacher can make children think creatively and critically by using High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions in a story telling activity.

Abstract

This paper is an attempt to discuss the personality of Henry Fleming, a fiction character in the novel the “Red Badge of Courage. The problem statement in this paper is “What defense mechanisms which occur in Fleming's character”? This study used American Studies theory by Robert Meredith which agrees that the American Studies approach needs more than one academic discipline. The reconciliation of academic discipline enables the writer uses psychological approach. According to Wilbur S. Scott the application of psychological knowledge can generate three kinds of study and analysis: a more precise language with which to discuss the creative process, a study of lives of authors, and the use of psychology to analyze fictional characters. The theories of psychology were taken from Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalysis: A General Introduction to Psychoanalysis (2002), Sigmund Freud's The Ego and The Id (1962), and Anna Freud's The Ego and Defense Mechanism (1948). The result of the study shows that there are a total of 25 acts of defense mechanisms conducted by Fleming in this novel. Henry acts all of the ten defense mechanisms from Anna Freud's theory. The primary act of denial is refusing to accept the condition Henry is facing and even lying to his own comrades. The acts of regression are not to talk to his own comrades either to help or just ignoring his comrades. Most of the acts of fantasy are about the ideal war in Henry's perspective which in reality was far from it. In the acts of displacement, most are by blaming his comrades and his generals instead of the enemy. The act of sublimation is conducted by hiding his fear and projecting his confidence. In the act of projection, Henry is projecting his insecurities to his enemy and his generals. Henry's act of rationalization is by justifying his flee from the battle. Henry's act of intellectualization is by 2 letting his thought overcome his act. The act of repression is by forgetting the fact that he is dependant to someone. And in the last, the act of reaction formation is by attacking the enemy in order to hide his fears.

Abstract

There are many different ways to approach the problems of meaning, since meaning is related to many different functions of language. The meanings of words in a language are interrelated and they are defined in part by their relations with other words in the language. Analyzed in the same semantic domain, words can be classified according to shared and differentiating features. Breaking down the sense of a word into its minimal distinctive features, componential analysis of meaning can be a useful approach in the study of meaning, particularly in determining the meaning of a lexeme. Although componential analysis has some difficulties and limitations in its application, it is still used in modern linguistics.
