Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan variasi-variasi fonetis dalam bahasaIndonesia yang disebabkan oleh adanya kontak bahasa dengan bahasa Inggris. Kajian inimerupakan kajian contact phonology, yaitu suatu kajian yang berhubungan dengan fenomenafenomenafonologis yang disebabkan karena adanya kontak bahasa atau kontak dialek. Datapenelitian ini berupa hasil pengucapan loanwords dalam bahasa Indonesia. Data diambildengan menggunakan metode simak dengan teknik rekam dan catat. Data dianalisis denganmenggunakan metode padan intralingual dengan teknik hubung banding membedakan (HBB).Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kontak bahasa antara bahasa Indonesia danbahasa Inggris mengakibatkan terjadinya variasi fonetis dalam bahasa Indonesia. Karena initerjadi pada loanwords, dampaknya adalah terbentuknya loan phonology. Beberapa bunyibahasa Inggris mengalami adaptasi dan diucapkan dengan cara yang berbeda dalam bahasaIndonesia. Variasi-variasi bunyi dalam bahasa Indonesia yang terbentuk karena kontak bahasadengan bahasa Inggris meliputi: /æ/ diucapkan menjadi [ɛ]; /ʃ/ menjadi [s]; /z/ menjadi [s]; /v/menjadi [f]; /t/ menjadi lesap; /d/ menjadi lesap; /th/ menjadi [t]; and /tʃ/ menjadi [t].Terjadinya variasi fonetis seperti ini dalam bahasa Indonesia disebabkan oleh adanya sistemfonologi yang berbeda antara bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris serta adanya pembiasaandalam pengucapan bunyi-bunyi vokal dan konsonan bahasa Indonesia yang berbeda denganbahasa Inggris.Kata kunci: kontak bahasa, contact phonology, variasi fonetis, loan phonology.

Abstract

Abstract—Mental clause as a grammatical realization to express experience of the world of our consciousness is commonly found in a text of meditation. This type of text has orientation to persuade people to act in a particular way as suggested by the speaker or writer. This research is aimed at exploring how mental clause in Indonesian text is re-contextualized to convey the same meaning in English. The source language text is a text of meditation entitled Butir-Butir Kebijaksanaan: Titian Hidup Sehat dengan Meditasi Bio-Energi Ratu Bagus (Ida Pandita Mpu Nabe Parama Daksa Natha Ratu Bagus, 2012) and the target language text is its translation entitled Pearls of Wisdom: The Path of a Healty Life with Ratu Bagus Bio-Energy Meditation (Stacey, 2014). Drawing translation as re-contextualization (House, 2015), Systemic Functional Linguistics (Halliday, 2014) and translation strategies (Malone, 1988), this study focuses on the directions of mental clause in Indonesian-English translation and the translation strategies inducing the directions. The research result shows that mental clause of the Indonesian text can be rendered into various clause types which include mental clause and non-mental clause. It can also be rendered into a form of nominalization. The strategies which condition the directions include strategy of equation, reordering, diffusion and condensation.

Abstract

Implicit meaning is one of the language phenomena which need overcoming in translation. This present study aims to investigate in what construction the implicit meaning is realized in Indonesian and how implicit meaning is handled when it is rendered into English. This study applied a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were taken from a book of Indonesian short stories entitled Mandi Api (Soethama, 2006) and its translation in English entitled Ordeal by Fire (Cork, 2008). The results of the research showed that implicit meaning in Indonesian texts is conveyed into English in two ways. Firstly, the implicit meaning is kept implicit. Secondly, it is realized in explicit construction. The implicit information of the source texts is made explicit in target texts for some reasons which include grammatical reason, semantic reason, and stylistic reason. In conclusion, although the source and the target texts have different constructions in the translation under study, the source meanings are successfully conveyed into English.

Abstract

Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk mengatasi permasalahan karyawan dalam meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris mereka. Peningkatan kemampuan berbahasa Inggris sangat dibutuhkan oleh para karyawan karena mereka biasanya dikunjungi oleh orang asing yang ingin mendapatkan informasi tentang kebijakan tentang pengelolaan pembuangan sampah sebagai salah satu masalah Bali sebagai daerah tujuan wisata. Untuk mengatasi masalah peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris karyawan, diperlukan metode pengajaran bahasa Inggris yang inovatif dan efektif sehingga dapat meningkatkan bahasa Inggris mereka secara signifikan. Metode pengajaran yang diterapkan dalam melakukan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Metode ini secara fungsional menekankan bagaimana bahasa digunakan, sedangkan secara struktural, CLT menekankan pada sistem atau aturan bahasa. Pelatihan Bahasa Inggris telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode Communicative Language Teaching selama delapan kali pertemuan. Setelah mengikuti pelatihan selama delapan kali, hasil pelatihan menunjukkan adanya peningkatan kemampuan berbicara bahasa Inggris peserta yang awalnya berada pada kisaran 2,55 untuk pretest kemudian meningkat menjadi 4,05 untuk post-test dengan skor kisaran 1-5. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa pelatihan bahasa Inggris yang diberikan kepada peserta telah mampu meningkatkan kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka secara signifikan.

Abstract

This study is specifically aimed at identifying the forms of adjuncts and the meanings they carry. In order to analyze the data, descriptive-qualitative approach was applied in this research. The data are sentences which contain adverbials functioning as adjuncts and they were taken from a novel entitled Fifty Shades of Freed, written by Erika Leonard Mitchell, also known as E.L. James (2012). They were collected through library research and then presented informally by providing some examples and elaborations. There are some important points that can be concluded based on the results of analysis. First, adjuncts may appear in many forms, either phrases or clauses. Phrases forming adjuncts found in this novel are noun phrases, adverb phrases, and prepositional phrases. Meanwhile, clauses forming adjuncts which appear in this novel are finite verb clauses, non-finite verb clauses (including to-infinitive, bare infinitive, -ing participles, and -ed participles), and verbless clauses. Secondly, there are various meanings carried by adjuncts found in Fifty Shades of Freed. Adjuncts which denote space or place carry the meanings of position, direction, and distance. Adjuncts referring to time carry the meanings of time position, duration, frequency, and time relationship. Adjuncts showing process carry the meanings of manner, means, instrument, and agentive. Besides, there are also adjuncts which imply respect, cause, purpose, and concession found in this novel.

Abstract

This study concerns with translation which involves languages that have different linguistic and cultural systems. When a source and target language do not have the same system of language and culture, to some extent, equivalence cannot be directly achieved. By deploying Vinay & Darbelnet’s Modulation (1995) and House’s translation equivalence (2015), this study is to reveal the changes of point of view the translators did in translating texts from Indonesian into English. The data sources of this present study include Indonesian novels and short stories loaded with culture and their English translations. The analysis revealed that to create adequate target texts, the translators changed their points of view through some conditions. The changes include: a) negation of opposite; b) part for the whole; c) abstract for concrete; d) cause for effect; e) active for passive; f) space for time; g) change of symbols; and h) intervals and limits. Changing point of view becomes cultural bridge in the translation which involves languages with different culture.

Abstract

Language has been the target of studies by experts, scholars, researchers and writers in the field of language to reveal various things related to it. One issue that has often been under the highlight is language skills. As widely known, language skills are determined by two general skills, namely receptive and productive skills. Receptive skills consist of listening and reading, while productive skills consist of speaking and writing. Unfortunately, not all of the suggested findings can help foreign language learners to master it completely. Therefore, this study published in this report is the result of the implementation of Community Service activities carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic by using Zoom. Based on the results of this community service activity, this report recommends several strategies for improving language skills. This study begins with reviewing existing theories provided by experts and continued by exploring them through exploratory qualitative studies. The data in this study were collected through a literature study of language theories and language skills and strategies to improve them. The data were analyzed by sorting out theories about appropriate strategies to improve language skills separately and to improve all language skills. The result of the study shows that productive and receptive skills are better improved through routine and repetitive exercises, including communicating with ourself and others. Listening to music is an effective way to improve listening skills. Learners must be able to find a learning stimulus through the use of various electronic and online media as well. To strengthen this, teachers must combine various strategies in teaching one language skill so that students are able understand learning easily.
