Abstract

Anxiety that is directly related to dental treatment, including tooth extraction, is still a problem experienced by many people around the world. Therefore, various methods have been developed to overcome this anxiety problem. Virtual reality is one of distraction method that often gets attention in medical context lately. Virtual reality uses advanced technology to create a virtual environment that immerses the patient in an interactive simulated world. This study aims to determine the effect of virtual reality interventions on patient anxiety during tooth extraction procedures at Haji Makassar General Hospital. This type of research is a clinical experimentalstudy with a pre test and post test research design with a control group design. The results showed that after the virtual reality intervention, there were average decreases in systolic blood pressure (6%), respiratory rate (9%), and pulse rate (12%). Whereas in the control group there were average increases in systolic blood pressure (2%), respiratory rate (3%), and pulse rate (4%). So it can be concluded that virtual reality intervention can reduce patient anxiety before tooth extraction procedure.

Abstract

One of the key factors contributing to the failure of dental healthcare services is the presence of anxiety and tension in patients, particularly pediatric patients. As a result, preventive measures or further treatment may need to be postponed until the next visit. This study aimed to investigate the level of anxiety among children receiving dental healthcare services at Puskesmas Palangga based on age, gender, and type of dental healthcare service. A descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach was employed. The sample comprised 60 children receiving dental healthcare services at Puskesmas Palangga. The level of anxiety was measured using the Face Image Scale. The findings revealed differences in anxiety levels based on the age of the children. Toddlers and young children tended to exhibit higher levels of anxiety compared to adolescents. Additionally, there were gender differences in anxiety levels, with girls experiencing higher levels of anxiety than boys. The study also found variations in anxiety levels based on the type of dental healthcare service provided. Tooth extraction procedures resulted in higher levels of anxiety compared to premedication and apex resection services. In conclusion, these research findings highlight the importance of considering age, gender, and type of dental healthcare service in managing anxiety among children receiving dental healthcare. Therefore, efforts can be made to create a comfortable and supportive environment for children during their dental treatment

Abstract

Dental and oral health is one of the supporting factors for public health. Tooth extraction procedures are the most common cause of dental anxiety. One way to reduce dental anxiety is through nonpharmacological interventions. Music therapy is an example of nonpharmacological intervention. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of instrumental music therapy on the patient's anxiety level during permanent tooth extraction at the Community Health Center. This type of research is a quasi-experimental research group pre-test and post-test design. The sampling technique used was consecutive sampling where the samples taken were patients with indications for tooth extraction who came to visit the Batang Community Health Center as many as 30 patients. Data analysis in this study used a paired t-test to see the difference. The results of this study found significant differences in the anxiety levels of patients who were not given music therapy (p>0.12) and those who were given music therapy (p>0.01). This study concluded that there was no significant effect of anxiety levels before and after tooth extraction in patients who did not receive music therapy. Whereas for patients who received music therapy there was a significant influence of anxiety levels before and after tooth extraction.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the need to explore more natural alternatives in assessing the level of oral hygiene. Commonly used disclosing solutions often contain chemicals, prompting this study to evaluate the potential of dragon fruit solution as a safer and more economical option. The research aims to compare the effectiveness of dragon fruit solution with disclosing solution in measuring the PHP-M Index among students of the Diploma IV Dental Therapy Program at Poltekkes Kemenkes Makassar. The research method involved 21 subjects who were treated with dragon fruit solution and disclosing solution, and their plaque indices were measured. The results indicated that the dragon fruit solution yielded comparable outcomes to the disclosing solution, with the majority of respondents falling into the 'moderate' criteria. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences between the two treatments. In conclusion, dragon fruit solution has the potential to replace disclosing solution in measuring the PHP-M Index, offering a natural and affordable alternative. These findings provide a basis for considering more environmentally friendly alternatives in dental hygiene assessment practices. Abstract

Children with intellectual disabilities, known as mentally handicapped children, have physical and emotional disorders that distinguish them from typical children. Oral hygiene among intellectually disabled children tends to be lower compared to children without disabilities. This is due to their condition of below-average intelligence and difficulties in adapting adaptively, which affects their oral health maintenance behavior. Oral health maintenance behavior is one of the factors that can influence oral hygiene. This research aims to determine the relationship between oral health maintenance behavior and oral hygiene in intellectually disabled children at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar. This study is a quantitative research using an observational approach with a cross-sectional design. The sampling technique in this study used purposive sampling, resulting in a sample of 30 individuals who were then assessed for oral hygiene levels using the OHI-S and oral health maintenance behavior using a questionnaire. Data analysis used the Mann-Whitney test to determine differences between the two variables based on gender and Spearman correlation to determine the relationship between the variables. The results of the study showed that oral health maintenance behavior in female students is better than in male students, and the OHI-S scores of female students are better than those of male students. However, the significant difference was only in the behavior variable. Overall, there is a significant relationship between behavior and OHI-S in intellectually disabled children at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar.

Abstract

Dental and oral health is a critical aspect of overall well-being, as untreated dental and gum issues can lead to pain, impaired chewing ability, and potentially disrupt overall health. This is particularly important for school-aged children, who are especially vulnerable to dental health problems. Notably, the prevalence of tooth decay, cavities, and oral diseases is highest among children aged 5-9 years, with an incidence rate of approximately 54.0%. This research aims to compare the effectiveness of scrapbooks and flipcharts as educational media for enhancing dental and oral health knowledge among students at SDN 133 Pewa, Pasui Village, Buntu Batu District, Enrekang. This study employs a quantitative experimental design with a quasi-experimental approach, utilizing a two-group pre-test and post-test format. The sampling technique used was quota sampling, encompassing a total of 30 students—15 assigned to the scrapbook group and 15 to the flipchart group. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon test and Mann-Whitney test to evaluate the outcomes. The findings indicate a significant improvement in dental and oral health knowledge post-intervention in both groups. The Mann-Whitney test result revealed a p-value of 0.004, indicating a significant difference in effectiveness between the scrapbook and flipchart educational interventions. Both scrapbook and flipchart media were effective in increasing students' knowledge of dental and oral health, with a notable difference in their impact. The study underscores the importance of selecting appropriate educational tools to enhance health knowledge among school-aged children.
