Abstract

This research was conducted to achieve two objectives. The first one is to give a vivid explanation about the peer feedback practice through Padlet chatroom. Secondly, it was carried out to dig out the students’ responses toward that practice. It was conducted within qualitative descriptive research by employing observation and open-ended questionnaires of 70 non-English university students as its data collecting technique. Then, qualitative data analysis was utilized by the researcher. The results revealed Padlet usage is a new thing for most of the students, yet they can use it easily because it is user-friendly and cost-free. Moreover, anonymity becomes one of the prominent features in Padlet chatroom. The students found it more convenient as being anonymous in giving and receiving feedback due to the freedom of expressing the students’ feedback without worrying about their friends’ sense of emotion. The last finding showed that the peer feedback practice through Padlet chatroom had met five principles out of seven principles that are proposed as the basic requirements of feedback practices. DOI: doi.org/10.24071/llt.2019.220105

Abstract

Abstract A few studies have investigated Zoom application for EFL speaking practice during this covid-19 outbreak. Still, there are minimal studies that compare speaking practice assisted by Zoom with face-to-face speaking practice. Thus, this study aimed to find out students’ preference of face-to-face speaking practice compared with Zoom-assisted speaking practice and the suggestions to meet the ideal speaking practice during the Covid-19 outbreak. The research method employed in this study was descriptive qualitative research in which it used open-ended questionnaires to gather data. The results showed that 61% of the students liked face-to-face speaking practice due to social interaction, the more comfortable atmosphere, practicality (no time constraint and no internet connection issue), and support for self-improvement (improving confidence, getting more knowledge, and easier to understand). Furthermore, some suggestions related to Zoom-assisted speaking practice were to make it shorter, be on time, and give more variation on discussion topics. In summary, face-to-face speaking practice is more preferred than Zoom-assisted speaking practice. Moreover, the suggestions to meet the ideal speaking practice during the covid-19 outbreak include Zoom with some class regulations that can save more internet data and make it more exciting. Abstract

In line with the significance of appropriate Japanese learning methods and materials for tourism students, this study investigates how Japanese tour guides in Indonesia learn Japanese. This study aimed to find out some factors which influenced the process of Japanese tour guides’ second language acquisition and the integration of those factors into Japanese teaching.  This study was a qualitative study with ethnography method approach. Interviews and observation were employed in this study as the research instruments in which 12 Japanese tour guides became the research objects. The findings showed that two main factors influenced the process of Japanese tour guides’ second language acquisition, namely intrinsic factors and extrinsic factors. Intrinsic factors were the factors which emerged within the tour guides themselves that affected the success of the language acquisition such as age, motivations, personality, aptitudes and the attitudes towards the Japanese language. Meanwhile, the extrinsic factors encompassed learning styles and teaching method that determined the success of language acquisition. Furthermore, the integration of those factors into the Japanese teaching generated some focuses on the teaching process, which were speaking fluently and interacting easily. Speaking fluently put more emphasis on the fluency rather than grammar mastery, while interacting easily was related to the implementation of intercultural language teaching.

The result exposed that 50.3% of the overall student was somewhat satisfied with the implementation of the WhatsApp-based speaking test. The study reported five significant students’ positive responses to the test.  Those positive responses were that it was considered as a fun-based test. It created an opportunity for the students to improve their language performance, it was also a time-saving test and it built a test environment that was less pressured and less anxious for the students. Then, the test was more appropriate for the students who belonged to the post-millennial generation. Also, the next finding of this study revealed three students’ negative responses towards the implementation of WhatsApp-based speaking tests in English classes. Those three prominent responses were the students disturbed by the noisy atmosphere during the test, the students encountered some technical problems on the test, and the students were still quite nervous during the test due to it was their first experience in doing the WhatsApp-based speaking test.
