Abstract

Writing a thesis in English is challenging for students, especially Indonesian Master's students for whom English is not their first language. Inherently, each chapter presents challenges to address when organizing a thesis. One of the crucial parts of the thesis is the conclusion chapter. It serves as a summary and a place to express suggestions and potential lines for further study. Thus, this study examined how Indonesian students wrote conclusion chapters of TEFL Master's theses. A total corpus of 3897 words was generated as the present study's data. Based on Chen & Kuo (2012) as the analytical framework of the present study, we found that move 2 step 1 (summarizing the study) was frequently used. Both move 1 (introducing the conclusion) and move 3 (evaluating) are obligatory. We also found optional moves and steps providing supporting and complementary roles: Move 4, step 2, and Move 3, step 1. These findings indicate that Indonesian master's students in the TEFL program used the conclusion writing of genre-based method characterized by the ability to adapt to conventional genre-framework and add additional steps. Understanding and using these variations can help Indonesian students craft concluding chapters that demonstrate scholarly engagement and the academic rigor of their study.

Abstract

The present study on content analysis attempts to give detailed examinations of the IELTS Speaking Test. It provides an overview of the aim of tests, as well as their reliability and validity, along with a discussion of language testing during the previous three decades. The merits and limitations of the IELTS Speaking Test were investigated, with an emphasis placed on exam scenarios. Validity, reliability, and application served as the evaluation criteria for this study. The IELTS speaking test is accurate and reliable in general; however, there are a few contentious aspects that may have an effect on the test's reliability and validity. These aspects were investigated and described in this paper. In general, the IELTS speaking test is accurate and reliable. There, the following potential proposals were made: A double-marking technique, a video conference delivery, and an intervention are all examples. The IELTS Speaking Test is one specialized component that is administered in a distinct place from the IELTS Listening, Reading, and Writing tests on the same or a different day. By using the face-to-face method, the examiner only needs to do an evaluation of the candidate's performance once, and the entire process is recorded so that there is a record in case something goes wrong. A few weeks after the test, candidates will receive the results online and by mail. Subjective factors like candidate preferences and marker performance will have a significant impact on the entire testing process and evaluation findings.

Abstract

Writing academic papers is challenging for students majoring non-English programs in higher education. This is because they must both understand academic writing conventions and English writing rules at the same time. This case study explores further perceptions of university students of Business and Administration regarding their academic writing skill. 20 students were selected by purposive sampling technique and were administered an online questionnaire to collect the data. Afterwards, three volunteer students joined in-depth interview to find out more information from the online questionnaire. The data were then analyzed by two techniques including frequency count for the quantitative data and qualitative analysis by employing thematic analysis for the qualitative data. The results discovered that students' perceptions of their academic ESP written competence in Business English were positive. Students are aware of both their own and the ESP writing requirements. However, these positive attitudes have not yet been fulfilled with appropriate writing lessons. Therefore, it is important for further research to conduct a study regarding the ESP writing lesson that works best for the students.

Abstract

Jauh sebelum terbentuk Negara Indonesia, Bahasa sebagai sebuah entitasdalam tatanan kebangsaan selalu mendapat perhatian serius oleh parapejuang kemerdekaan maupun kaum cendikiawan. Urgensi kebahasaankhususnya pada bahasa nasional ternyata sangat disadari hingga kini olehpemerintah. Meskipun demikian, setelah 64 tahun Indonesia merdeka, barupada tahun 2009 diterbitkan undang-undang No. 24/2009 yang mengaturtentang Bahasa Nasional, Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Politeness involves evaluations and attitudes which are closely connected to the assessment of actions. Politeness investigations in presidential debates enables voters to assess the candidates’ behavior to make well-informed decision during the election. The present study investigated politeness strategies in two different presidential debates within the United States electoral context: the Democratic party and the final presidential debates. Data were analyzed by adopting the coding scheme in Brown and Levinson’s frameworks. The overall result indicated that both the presidential debates used more positive politeness strategies than the negative politeness. PPS-10 (offer and promise), PPS-12 (include speaker and hearer in the activity) and NPS-2 (hedge) were more frequently used in both types of debates. PPS-3 (intensify interest to hearer) was frequent in the democratic debate alone. Meanwhile, PPS-15 (give gits to hearer) was frequent in the final presidential debate alone. The findings imply that the use of the politeness strategies can shape the candidates’ positive political images in the presidential debates. HIGHLIGHTS: Findings show that the selected politeness strategies are to shape candidates’ positive political images in the presidential debates. Having positive images such as not harsh, having good behavior are considered to be critical importance in determining the winning of the election. Negative politeness is less preferably used and has been less taken into account as proper rhetorical skills in the debates.
